Chapter 89: Kindness Warms the Cold Road

"This beef porridge tastes delicious and the beef is very tender. Did you add any special seasoning?" Lin Yuexi asked.

Lu Cheng explained: "It's just marinated with soy sauce and cooking wine. Maybe it's because we used fresh beef, so it tastes better."

Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun had food all over their faces. Lu Cheng and Lin Yuexi couldn't help laughing when they saw them.

"Come, try this preserved egg and soybean soup, it's very nutritious." Lu Cheng served a bowl of soup to each child.

Lu Xiyun took a sip carefully, and her eyes lit up all of a sudden, "Dad, this soup is also delicious, cool and comfortable."

Lu Ziyan also said: "Yes, and it doesn't have the weird taste I drank before."

"What kind of strange smell? Are you saying that what mom cooked before wasn't as delicious as what your dad cooked?" Lin Yuexi glared at Lu Ziyan.

"No! Mom, I'm talking about the time you took me to the state-owned restaurant..." Lu Ziyan heard Lin Yuexi's dissatisfaction and changed his words repeatedly.

Lin Yuexi then chuckled: "That's about right, but your dad did a good job making breakfast today."

After she said that, she quickly tasted it. The soup tasted really good. The soybeans were cooked very soft and the flavor of the preserved egg was also well blended without any fishy smell.

She praised repeatedly, "Lu Cheng, your soup is very authentic. I didn't expect you could make this."

Lu Cheng smiled and said, "I drank it occasionally when I was in military school, and I remembered the taste. I didn't expect that I would be quite successful in making it today."

The family ate and chatted, with laughter all around.

After breakfast, Lin Yuexi went to the village health station, and Lu Cheng sent the two children to school.

Because Lu Cheng went home, Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun were ridiculously late, but the teacher didn't say anything.

Originally, Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun were not of age, but they were accepted temporarily because they were smart.

With Lucheng, Lin Yuexi's ability will sooner or later allow her to take the two children to go to school in the city, so there is no need to worry about it.

After sending the two children to school, Lu Cheng had nothing to do, so he simply came to the clinic to look after Lin Yuexi.

Fortunately, there were not many people coming to the clinic to see a doctor, otherwise Lin Yuexi really didn’t know how to deal with him.

The winter sun lazily sprinkled in front of the village clinic. Seeing that almost no one came for treatment that afternoon, Lin Yuexi simply closed the door.

She thought that since Lu Cheng rarely had free time to go home, it would be better for the family to go out for a walk.

So she simply asked for leave for Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun, and let Lu Cheng ride a bicycle, with Lu Ziyan sitting on the front handlebar and her and Lu Xiyun sitting on the back frame. Although it was a bit crowded, Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun were very happy to see their father taking them to the town.

Along the way, the laughter of the two children filled the small stone-paved road in the countryside, and Lu Cheng and Lin Yuexi's faces were also filled with happy smiles.

The family ordered sweet and sour pork ribs, roasted eggplant, mu shu pork, and kelp and tofu soup at the state-owned restaurant in the town. The food was served steaming hot.

The sweet and sour spareribs were bright red in color, and the sweet and sour flavor was fragrant. Lu Ziyan couldn't wait to pick up a piece and took a bite. It made a "crunch" sound, and his face was full of satisfaction.

"Dad, this sweet and sour pork ribs is delicious, sweet and has lots of meat!"

Lu Xiyun also nodded, and tried hard to hold the chopsticks in her little hands, wanting to pick up a piece of her own.

The roasted eggplant is soft and tasty, the mu shu pork is fragrant, and the various ingredients are matched just right.

Lu Cheng carefully picked up some dishes for Lin Yuexi. Lin Yuexi looked at her family with a smile. A warm atmosphere filled the dining table.

The kelp and tofu soup is light and refreshing. One sip will warm your whole body. The family chats with each other, shares the delicious food on the plate, and enjoys this rare reunion time.

After dinner, they strolled along the streets of the town. There were stalls selling candied haws on the street. The red hawthorns were wrapped in crystal sugar and sparkled in the sun.

Seeing the desire in the children's eyes, Lu Cheng bought two strings. Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun took the candied haws, as happy as if they had the most precious treasure in the world. They licked the sugar coating carefully, fearing that it would melt too quickly.

Because this is the first time that dad bought them candied haws!

Next, they walked into a supply and marketing cooperative, which was filled with a variety of daily necessities and simple toys.

Lu Cheng bought a few picture books for the children. Lu Ziyan was immediately attracted by the pictures in the books, while Lu Xiyun picked out a colorful shuttlecock. The family's laughter echoed in the supply and marketing cooperative.

Tired of walking around, they came to the riverside of the town and found a patch of grass to sit down.

The winter sun shines on my body, warm. Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun chase each other by the river, picking up a small stone from time to time to compete to see who can throw it farther.

Lin Yuexi leaned on Lu Cheng's shoulder, quietly watching the children play, occasionally whispering a few words about family matters.

Before we knew it, the sun was setting and the sky was dyed orange-red.

Lu Cheng looked at the time and said, "Zi Yan, Xi Yun, we should go back, otherwise it will be difficult to walk on the road after dark."

Although Lu Ziyan and Lu Xiyun were a little reluctant, they nodded obediently and followed their parents towards the bicycles.

Lu Cheng placed Lu Ziyan on the crossbar in front of the bicycle, helped Lin Yuexi and Lu Xiyun sit firmly in the back, then pedaled the bike and slowly rode towards home.

Unexpectedly, when we were almost at the village entrance, suddenly, a panicked cry broke the tranquility of the evening: "Lao Zhou, what's wrong with you! Wake up..." The voice was full of fear and anxiety.

Lin Yuexi's heart tightened, and she quickly jumped off the back seat of the bicycle and ran towards the source of the sound.

But I only saw a middle-aged man lying on the ground, his face as pale as paper, his eyes closed, his lips slightly purple, and his body motionless.

The middle-aged woman next to him was shaking the man's body with tears on her face, calling his name in a trembling voice, her eyes full of helplessness and despair.

Lin Yuexi took a closer look and her heart skipped a beat. She recognized this middle-aged couple. They were classified as the "five black categories" in the village. One was a professor and the other had relatives overseas. They had always lived in the cowshed and few people interacted with them.

In this special historical context, they have been suffering from various unfair treatments and discriminations, and their lives are very difficult.

On weekdays, Lin Yuexi occasionally met them in the village, and could always see a deep loneliness and helplessness in their eyes, but even so, the elegant temperament of their intellectuals remained unchanged.

Seeing them encountering such an emergency at this moment, Lin Yuexi felt a surge of pity in her heart. Besides, as a doctor, how could she just stand by and watch them die?
