Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Lin Xing squatted down, looked the man straight in the eye, and asked softly, "If you have anything to say, just ask. I will do my best to help you."

The man was no longer silent, and cried, "Please, gentlemen, save my wife. She has been in poor health since she was young, and now she is pregnant and has caught a cold."

"Where is your wife now?"

"She has fallen asleep. As long as you are willing to save her, I am willing to work for you like a slave."

"There's no need to do that. This is our responsibility. Get up quickly, I'll get you a bowl of medicine and bring it to her." Lin Xing helped the man up and signaled the people around him to get the medicine.

The man took the medicine handed to him by the doctor and wanted to kowtow to express his gratitude, but he was concerned about the medicine bowl in his hand and did not dare to move too much.

"Hurry up and give the medicine to your wife."

Watching the man leave, Lin Xing knew what to do with the remaining medicine. She walked to the front of the crowd and asked loudly, "Are there any pregnant women?"

No one responded.

Lin Xing explained helplessly: "There are still some medicines left. If there are pregnant women, they can come and get them. I hope everyone can understand that pregnant women do have a hard time."

A woman stood up first to get the medicine, and seeing this, the other women followed. When the crowd dispersed, the three of them looked at the remaining medicine in front of them and looked at each other in bewilderment.

"No? Didn't we boil so much medicine?" Yu Hang really didn't understand. There were obviously so many people coming to serve it just now. Is there something wrong with the pot?

Shen Ling shook his head, while Lin Xing stared at the crowd in a daze. She had noticed the reason just now, and when she heard the two people asking questions, she explained it to them softly.

"We were short of manpower, so we had to let them serve the medicine themselves. Their bowls were only half full."

The other two were silent. Yes, everyone knew how precious the medicine was. They thought that if they drank less, more people would be able to drink the medicine.

A little girl suddenly walked towards them. Lin Xing noticed her and quickly ran to her side. She saw that the little girl was holding a bowl with half of the medicine left in it.

"Little sister, what's wrong? Didn't you drink the medicine?" Lin Xing squatted beside her and asked her.

"No, sister. This is what my mother asked me to give you. She said you have worked hard, so she asked you to drink this medicine." The little girl said as she handed the medicine to Lin Xing.

Lin Xing smiled and pushed the medicine back, "Little sister, you guys should drink this medicine. Sister doesn't need to drink it. Just tell your mother that this is for her."

"No, I want my sister to drink it." The little girl was only five or six years old, and she felt that she could not leave until she completed her mother's task.

The sound of their conversation was quite loud and everyone around them could hear it. When Lin Xing was coaxing the little girl to go back to her mother, the people around them suddenly spoke.

"Manager Lin, this kid is right. You've been with us all day, so you should take some medicine. Otherwise, what if you fall ill first?"

"Yes, Manager Lin, you should stop refusing. Just drink the remaining medicine."

"We are no longer afraid of plague."

More and more people advised them to take the medicine, and for a moment Lin Xing didn’t know what to do. Don’t they know that this could be their life-saving medicine? They must know, but they know better who saved them.

"Okay, thank you for your understanding on behalf of everyone. We will drink the remaining medicine. Thank you for your concern."

"That's right." After hearing Lin Xing give in, everyone stopped trying to persuade her.

After Lin Xing agreed, the little girl suddenly ran away from her. Lin Xing wanted to chase her, but when she looked up, she saw the little girl's mother waiting for her in the distance, and she felt relieved.

When she returned to Yu Hang and the others, someone handed Lin Xing a full cup of medicine.

Lin Xing took it and drank it quickly, then put on her own clothes. But her expression turned grim, this medicine was really bitter. Not only her, but everyone who drank the medicine put on a mask of pain. They looked at each other and laughed out loud.

"Chen Ling, do you have no sense of taste?"

Yu Hang's words made Lin Xing turn her gaze to Shen Ling. Just as he said, Shen Ling's expression did not change at all. If you didn't know, you would have thought he didn't drink the medicine. Lin Xing was shocked.

"It's okay. I'm used to it."

The two nodded thoughtfully. Lin Xing suddenly thought that they should take more western medicine. Today was her first time to drink real Chinese medicine. No wonder she felt so uncomfortable. Ugh.

Now that the medicine was finished, everyone started to do the final cleanup. Some refugees came over spontaneously to help, but they were all driven back to sleep.

When everything was over, Lin Xing and the others also wanted to go to bed. In order to save time, they chose to sleep next to each other. Their sleeping place wasn't much better, they just had one more room than the disaster victims.

In order to accommodate the refugees, they specially found an open space. These houses have been built many years ago. Fortunately, it didn’t rain today, otherwise they would probably have to take a shower.

Lin Xing was so tired today and so many things happened that she fell asleep as soon as she lay down on the bed. After seeing the stars twice, she heard the hustle and bustle outside.

Before she could take a closer look, she heard a familiar voice coming from outside the door: "Sister Xiao Xing, are you awake?"

It’s Huan’er.

"Huan'er, why are you here?" Lin Xing ran to open the door happily, and started talking to Lin Huan before the door was opened.

Lin Huan entered the house and looked at the dirty Lin Xing with a distressed expression.

"I came here with the people from the restaurant. Didn't you ask us to transfer some people to help?"

Seeing Lin Huan's face, Lin Xing hurried to find her own. She had to be careful tonight.

After putting on the face coat, Lin Xing continued, "You shouldn't have come here. It's so dangerous here."

"Sister Xiao Xing is here, why can't I come? Uncle Gui is here too, and Sister Lian wanted to come with us, but Uncle Gui didn't agree."

"Wherever Sister Xiao Xing is, I will be there. I will follow you forever."

Even if Lin Xing wanted to scold her again, she couldn't say it. Huan'er was also worried about her and could only touch her head helplessly.

"Since you said Uncle Gui is here too, let's go help him. We still have a lot to do today."

The two walked out of the door. Lin Huan was very happy. She had no idea how dangerous it was here. She only knew that she could accompany Lin Xing.

By the time the two got outside, everyone had already come out. Lin Xing quickly instructed the restaurant staff to distribute the noodles they brought. Although it was a little late, it was better than nothing.

Yu Hang and Shen Ling were also helping to move the ingredients down. Lin Xing originally wanted to help, but the medicinal materials had already been delivered, so she could only go back to her old job.

Everyone did their tasks in an orderly manner, and when the aroma of food rose, their busy morning came to an end. In order to avoid what happened last night, Lin Xing distributed the food personally.

Without exception, when Lin Xing handed the food to those people, everyone said thank you, and Lin Xing responded one by one. A child came to the front of the line.

She looked carefully and found that this was the girl from last night. She was confused and asked another question.

"Little sister, where is your mother? Why did you come here by yourself?"

The girl whispered, "My mother is sleeping, don't wake her up."

"Then I'll help you take the food back, and you can show me the way, okay?"

"Thank you, sister. Come with me."

Lin Xing was afraid that she would spill the food, so she called someone to take her place, and she took the little girl to find her mother.

The little girl was jumping up and down in front, perhaps because she was happy about today's meal. She probably didn't know anything and thought they were here to play.

"Sister, can we go quickly? We haven't had such delicious food for a long time. My mother will definitely be happy."

"Okay." Looking at the smile on the little girl's face, Lin Xing continued speaking along with her words.

The girl took her to a corner of the shed, where there was indeed a woman lying. The girl ran to her side and talked to her.

"Mom, get up and eat."

There was no response. The girl continued to call her, but still no response. Lin Xing had a bad feeling in her heart. She put down the food in her hand, walked to the girl and pulled her away from her mother.

"Sister, come and call your mother, okay?"

"good."

Lin Xing pushed the woman, but seeing that she didn't respond, she gritted her teeth and lifted the quilt covering her. Only then did she see how thin the woman was; her entire face was sunken.

Lin Xing sighed and saw that the woman's face was pale. It was basically confirmed that she was dead, but Lin Xing still didn't give up.

There was no breathing, no miracle. She simply picked up the girl and stopped her from looking. In fact, the girl didn't understand anything. It was Lin Xing who was too cowardly.

"Little sister, your mother needs to sleep for a while longer. Can I take you to eat first?" Restraining the turbulent emotions in her heart, Lin Xing pretended to be calm and said to the child in her arms.

"But mom will be hungry when she wakes up."

"Sister, put the food here. Mom can eat it if she's hungry. Let's not disturb Mom and let her have a good rest."

"Okay, sister, let's go."

After carrying the person back, Lin Xing signaled to Yu Hang to deal with the body, and she took the child to eat. The child was very well behaved and didn't cry at all. She could eat by herself and didn't let Lin Xing feed her.

Lin Xing just looked at the child, daydreaming from time to time. Suddenly, she noticed someone carrying the woman's body passing by them. When she wanted to stop them, it was too late. The girl saw it.

The girl did not start crying as Lin Xing expected, but asked Lin Xing: "Sister, is Mommy dead?"

"Yes." Lin Xing wanted to deceive the girl, but after thinking it over, she answered truthfully.

"That's great, Mom is home." The girl became happy and even smiled when she heard the answer.

"go home?"

"Yes, my mother told me that if a person dies, he won't have to suffer from hunger and cold. Isn't this like going home? When I am at home, I can eat meals like this every day." The girl pointed to the very ordinary meal in her hand.

Lin Xing couldn't bear to tell the girl the reality, so she smiled and said, "Yes, mom is home."

After receiving an affirmative answer, the girl happily started to eat her meal, with the smile never leaving her face.

"Can you tell me your name?" Lin Xing asked the girl her name after she finished her meal.

"My name is Wang Yuanyuan, I'm six years old and live in Wangjia Town, Pingyang County." This question seemed to trigger her automatic reply.

"Yuanyuan, mom is home now. Are you willing to go home with your sister?"

The girl's eyes lit up and she asked hesitantly, "Will I be able to have enough food if I go home with my sister?"

"Of course, there's a big house to live in."

"Then I'd like to go home with my sister." After saying this, Yuanyuan asked in a low voice, "Can I see my mother then?"

"Mom and sister don't live in the same house, but don't worry, you'll be able to see mom when you grow up."

"Okay, thank you, sister."

Lin Xing took the child to find Uncle Gui and told him that she had picked up a child.

"Uncle Gui, please take care of the child." Lin Xing directly handed the child to Uncle Gui, which scared Uncle Gui. Yuanyuan smiled shyly.

"Shopkeeper, what is this?"

"Her mother passed away and the child is so young. Let her go back to the restaurant with us." Lin Xing said while making faces to amuse Yuanyuan, making her laugh non-stop.

"Okay." Uncle Gui kept adjusting Yuanyuan, fearing that she would fall.

"Send Yuanyuan back to the restaurant later. Remember to tell them to put Yuanyuan in a room by herself and prevent her from coming into contact with anyone for the next two days."

Lin Xing didn't have time to stay here any longer, as she was still busy, so she went to boil medicine.

Uncle Gui was very efficient and soon prepared the carriage to take Yuanyuan back to the restaurant. Lin Xing looked in the direction of the carriage and found Yuanyuan waving at her, so she also said goodbye to Yuanyuan.
