Chapter 23

Chapter 23

She said she was going back to the room to sleep, but Lin Xing lying on the bed had no desire to sleep at all. She didn't know what the situation was outside the city, nor did she know if Yu Hang and Shen Ling could handle it.

“Pah.”

Lin Xing sat up and stared at the locked window. Was she hallucinating? There was no more sound coming from outside the window, and she was about to lie down.

"Snap." Another sound, this was definitely not an illusion.

She got out of bed and walked to the window. She pushed it open and saw a pair of bright eyes. Only when she recognized it was Yu Hang did Lin Xing feel relieved.

"Why are you here so late?"

"I came to bring you something. But why haven't you slept yet?" Yu Hang acted like a parent.

Lin Xing didn't buy his tricks and crossed her arms over her chest. "Are you still busy outside the city?"

"I guess so. The matter has been dealt with almost completely." Yu Hang handed over another notebook. "This is the list of all the deceased. I'll copy one for you."

“That’s thoughtful.”

Yu Hang leaned against the window, looking up and down so frequently that even Lin Xing, who was flipping through the list, noticed it.

Lin Xing asked in confusion: "You got a stiff neck? But didn't you sleep tonight?"

This cured Yu Hang's stiff neck. He stopped moving and stared at Lin Xing, saying in a wronged voice, "What is this all about? I have something to say."

"Go ahead."

"Are you okay?" Yu Hang asked softly, as if a louder voice would disturb Lin Xing.

Lin Xing said without hesitation: "I'm fine."

"How can you be okay? This night was not peaceful. Even if these things happened to an octogenarian, he would not be able to bear it." Yu Hang paused at the right time, and when he found that Lin Xing's expression was normal, he continued, "Let alone you?"

"What can I do? A fire is falling from the sky. How can I, the owner of a restaurant, go against the will of heaven?"

There was no light in the room, and Lin Xing's expression was dim and difficult to discern, but Yu Hang knew that she was speaking in anger. Although the two had not been together for a long time, he understood what kind of person Lin Xing was.

"How can you say you are going against the will of heaven? This is man-made, can't you see that?"

Lin Xing smiled bitterly and said, "So what? What difference does it make whether it's man-made or heaven-sent? If we can't find out the truth, we might as well blame it on heaven. This way, we can feel less guilty."

"If you didn't feel guilty, you wouldn't be at the window."

The two were speechless for a moment.

"It's getting late, you should leave quickly." Lin Xing went to close the window, but was stopped by Yu Hang.

Lin Xing didn't want to pay attention to him, but she couldn't bear to really hurt Yu Hang. She wanted to scare Yu Hang and make him leave on his own, but after trying for a long time she failed to close the door, so she had to give up.

"What do you mean, you don't want to leave?"

"I won't leave until things are made clear." Yu Hang was surprisingly stubborn.

Lin Xing turned around, but Yu Hang didn't care and continued, "Neither you nor I belong here. I know you want to protect yourself, and I also know you despise this world, but there is nothing we can do now."

"By now, you should have guessed a lot of things, and I don't have to hide anything from you anymore." Lin Xing turned back.

The matter is not complicated. The Prime Minister did these things just to win over Lin Xing, and Yu Hang appeared here to prevent Lin Xing from being deceived by the Prime Minister's appearance.

After Yu Hang finished speaking, he looked at Lin Xing nervously, but saw that Lin Xing looked calm, as if she didn't care.

"I know everything. You should go back and rest early. Let me calm down alone."

Yu Hang left dejectedly. After taking a few steps, he looked back and found Lin Xing was still there, so he turned back.

"Would you like to go to the capital with me?"

"What?"

Yu Hang's return startled the dazed Lin Xing. She didn't hear clearly what Yu Hang said, but it didn't matter, Yu Hang would ask again.

"Would you like to go to the capital with me?"

This time Lin Xing heard it clearly and pretended to hesitate, "Let me think about it."

Although she didn't give a positive answer, Yu Hang knew that Lin Xing had agreed. He jumped away, and only after taking a few steps did he remember that he had forgotten to say goodbye to Lin Xing.

Yu Hang turned around and waved to Lin Xing, saying "bye" with his mouth. Lin Xing smiled and closed the window.

The moonlight tonight is beautiful, especially the view in front of Lin Xing’s window.

After closing the window, Lin Xing flipped through a few pages of the list in her hand, then threw the list onto the table together with the list of those infected with the plague, and returned to bed.

This sleep was not a good one, Lin Xing had a dream. She dreamed that she woke up and found that all the names on the table had disappeared. Lin Xing went to light a lamp to see more clearly, but her hand slipped and the oil lamp fell to the ground. A fire suddenly broke out and she could not escape.

Lin Xing wanted to push the door, but the moment the door opened she woke up and sat up suddenly from the bed. She gasped for breath and suddenly remembered the list on the table. She hurriedly got out of bed to check and it was still there.

Unable to fall asleep, Lin Xing stood up and lit the lamp. The room suddenly became bright, dispelling the shadow brought by the nightmare.

Lin Xing opened the window to let the breeze blow into the house. Following the footsteps of the wind, Lin Xing sat back at the table. The list on the table was blown away by the wind. Lin Xing smoothed it out with her hand and looked back at the list.

The next second, Lin Xing began to flip through the list frantically, starting from the first page, reading it page by page, finishing one book and starting the next. The more Lin Xing looked, the more wrong her expression became.

The two lists are basically the same, except for one person, Xunhuan. Her name was among those who died in the fire, but her name was not in the other book.

This time she really couldn't fall asleep, so she put down the list in her hand and looked at the flickering lights.

Lin Xing sat there like that all night without sleeping.

As the sky gradually brightened, there was a rustling sound outside the door, as if someone was pacing. After a while the sound disappeared, the man stood in front of the door, and then there was a knock on the door.

"Sister Xiao Xing, are you awake?"

Lin Xing stood up to knock on the door, but her legs were numb from sitting for so long that she lost her balance and staggered a few steps, accidentally sweeping the list on the table to the ground.

The noise was quite loud, so Huan'er who was outside the door naturally heard it. She is anxious

Knock on the door, "Sister Xiao Xing, what happened? Are you okay?"

"It's okay. I didn't stand firmly and accidentally knocked over something on the table." Lin Xing replied to Huan'er while picking up the things. She made sure there were no flaws before opening the door for her.

"Why are you here so early? What's the matter?"

Huan'er looked at her boss, who had dark circles under his eyes. He clearly didn't get enough rest, but he pretended to be fine. She didn't want to expose Lin Xing and secretly felt sorry for her.

"Sister Lian just woke up." Huan'er gritted her teeth and explained the purpose of her visit. "She went to look for Yuanyuan, but couldn't find her. Now she is distraught. Uncle Gui asked me to ask the shopkeeper what he wanted to tell her."

"What should I say?" Lin Xing muttered to herself, and after a long while she gave an answer, "Tell her that I have sent someone to bury Yuanyuan, and tell her not to worry about her anymore."

Huan'er nodded in agreement, closed the door and left. Lin Xing maintained the same posture as when they parted, listening to the footsteps passing by outside the house. She was the only one standing there like a statue.

Someone knocked on her door, but she ignored them all and didn't let anyone in. She heard Huan'er's worry, Uncle Gui's greetings and even Liu Lian coming to the door. Lin Xing wanted to go out and tell everyone "She's fine, nothing happened at all", but her body didn't respond at all.

Before she knew it, it was dark. Lin Xing came to her senses and realized that another day had ended. Why was today so short, while yesterday seemed like a year? She doesn't understand, but she seems to understand.

The same sound as last night came from outside the window, and Lin Xing felt that it was a little early today. She dragged her numb body to the window, took a few deep breaths, put on a standard smile, and then opened the window.

Yu Hang was waiting with great joy, but when he saw the haggard Lin Xing, his heartache overshadowed the joy of seeing her. The bright smile froze for a moment, only a moment, and then he adjusted himself back.

"Why are you here again?"

Lin Xing scared herself when she opened her mouth. She didn't expect her voice to be so hoarse. Perhaps her expression could be calm, but her voice could not be disguised. Her struggle throughout the day and night was exposed by her hoarse voice.

Yu Hang was also stunned, more obviously than before, "Of course I came here to talk to you. Shen Ling and I are also outside the city today. The surviving people have been properly arranged. Xun Huan's body has not been found, and many people have been burned beyond recognition."

Even after a day, Yu Hang still couldn't accept it when he thought about the scene.

Lin Xing wanted to tell him about her discovery today, but before she could say a word, she was stopped by Yu Hang.

"You should have a good rest now. We can talk about it tomorrow if there is anything." Yu Hang closed the window quickly, not giving Lin Xing time to react abnormally.

Lin Xing wanted to laugh, but she couldn't because she was too tired.

Suddenly the window opened again, and Yu Hang used a small stone to extinguish the light. "Go back to bed by the moonlight. When you arrive, I will close the window and leave."

The moonlight poured into the room, it was really bright. Lin Xing stared at Yu Hang for a while and then laughed. She didn't give Yu Hang a chance to speak and turned to walk to the bed.

Hearing the sound of the window closing, fatigue came over Lin Xing and pulled her into sleep. This time it was a beautiful dream. There was no big fire and no list of names. There was only endless delicious food and Yu Hang standing in the distance watching her.

No, why is Yu Hang here? I must have seen it wrong.

How come she heard the sound of drums while eating? It has quite a rhythm and if you listen carefully you can hear people talking.

"Sister Xiao Xing, I'm here to bring you food."

No, this is not a dream.

The door was still knocking. Lin Xing woke up, got up and opened the door.

Lin Xing opened the door and found that the sky was not very bright. It was very early, but Huan'er in front of her was holding a sumptuous meal. "Why are you here so early?"

"Sister Xiao Xing, didn't you leave me a note asking me to come and deliver the food early in the morning?" Huan'er's eyes fell on the food and she smiled slyly, "Sister Lian wouldn't let me get these for you. She said you should eat lighter, but I still took them secretly."

Seeing Huan'er trying to get credit, Lin Xing really couldn't say no, "You know me well. I just want to eat these meals."

Huan'er clearly didn't move, but Lin Xing felt like she was about to fly. Putting the food down, Huan'er quietly left, fearing to disturb her boss.

Lin Xing did not go to eat. Instead, she came to the window, opened it, and saw Yu Hang sleeping next to her.

She leaned out of the window and whispered in Yu Hang's ear, "Get up and eat, Grand Inspector Yu."

As Lin Xing wished, Yu Hang stood up suddenly and almost hit the window sill. Lin Xing was in a backlit position and could only squint to look at him.

"You're awake now? Why don't you sleep a little longer?" Yu Hang looked around the window but didn't look at Lin Xing.

"It's all your fault. Didn't you ask Huan'er to bring me food? She came early in the morning, but you slept here all night?"

"Hey, you found me."
