Chapter 83 The Village Chief Gets a Free Meal

Seeing that he was suddenly in low spirits, Su Nanxi knew that he was overthinking things again, so she told him that she had someone make a waterwheel and that it should be ready to be picked up tomorrow.

Mo Qinghe was very happy to hear this. Does that mean he will be able to see it?

The children heard this and ran over to ask what was going on.

Mo Qinghe regained her aloof demeanor and said calmly, "Your third aunt said there's a surprise tomorrow!"

The children's first thought was that delicious food was being made again, and they jumped and danced with joy, shouting, "Oh! Great! Great! There's food again!"

Su Nanxi was speechless. A bunch of foodies, all they know is eating!

Mo Qinghe saw his wife roll her eyes playfully and laughed without any consideration for her feelings.

He couldn't help it; he just thought his wife was lively and adorable!

Neither of them corrected it, which made the children happy all day.

When she got home, Su Nanxi saw that there was still a lot of rice flour left. She asked the children to pick out the wild vegetables and wash them clean, while she herself started making rice flour with a winnowing basket.

Qin brought back a bunch of green beans, and knowing that Su Nanxi liked chives, she also specially cut a small bundle.

This suited her perfectly, making the filling even more abundant.

Qin understood Su Nanxi's meaning, so she washed and chopped the green beans, cut the chives into small sections, stir-fried them separately, and plated them.

Having cooked so much, she knew what to add to make it taste good. She soaked some wood ear mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms, and added the dried pork jerky that Su Nanxi brought out, making quite a lot.

Having two stoves has its advantages. Look, you can light both at the same time, and the speed is incredibly fast!

A table was set up in the yard for easy operation.

After Qin finished cooking the dishes, she put them all on the table and warned the children not to steal any.

Everyone came back, washed their hands, and gathered around, knowing there would be a good meal tonight.

The Zhao family also came to help; with more people helping, it was much faster.

After the starch is ripened, it is placed on the table, the stir-fried vegetables are placed on it, and it is wrapped up to make filling rolls. Then, some soup is poured on it and it is ready to eat.

Everyone knew the place well, so we let the two elders eat first, and then it was the adults' and children's turn.

She learned very quickly; Su Nanxi could almost immediately start rolling the next one after finishing one, without stopping. With the help of Zhao and Qin, they finished in no time.

With plenty of filling and a thin skin, each one is quite round and plump; a child would definitely be full after eating two. Mo Dongcheng couldn't finish two, so he could only eat one and a half.

Everyone was enjoying their meal when the village chief called out to Old Man Mo from the gate.

"Oh, the village chief has come to visit! It's a rare treat! Come in, come in first, let's talk after we've had our fill! You've come at just the right time, we're having some stuffed rolls!"

When Mo Lao Er saw this, he hurried over to open the door and invite the village chief in.

The others also put down their bowls and chopsticks and followed them out.

Seeing this, the village chief knew he had come at the wrong time, as the family was having dinner. So he waved his hand and said, "You eat, don't worry about me. I'll just say a few words and then leave."

Grandma Mo seemed displeased. She took a bowl, picked up two stuffed rolls, poured broth over them, and said, "What are you saying! You've come all this way, how can we eat? Look at you! Since you're here, let's eat and chat at the same time! It's not anything fancy, we make it all the time. Why don't you try it and see if it's good?"

He gestured to Old Man Mo with his eyes, and Old Man Mo understood. He pulled the village chief to sit down at the table, saying, "That's right, ordinary people don't have much to eat, so please don't be picky! Come and try some!"

After saying that, he took the bowl and chopsticks from Grandma Mo's hands and placed them in front of the village chief.

The village chief hadn't eaten dinner either. Like the Mo family before, his family only drank some rice porridge for dinner. This rice porridge wasn't very filling; it would disappear after he sweated, so he was hungry now too.

Smelling the fragrant and beautiful noodles, his hand honestly took the chopsticks, and then he said, "Well then, I won't be polite."

Grandma Mo waved her hand, "Hey! Don't be so polite, have a taste!"

The village chief took a small, reserved bite, and exclaimed, "Wow! It's so delicious!" He took another bite, and then another! After that, he just kept his head down and ate heartily.

Seeing that the village chief was enjoying his meal, everyone picked up their chopsticks and continued eating.

After finishing his meal, the village chief felt extremely embarrassed. He had only come to ask a question and ended up getting a free dinner from the village chief, and all he did was eat!

Ugh! How embarrassing!

It feels like I haven't eaten in ages!

Zhao wanted to keep an eye on Mo Dongcheng. She noticed the village chief's unease and changed the subject, "Village chief, this rice noodle is very simple. Every household has beans, chives, and other vegetables. Just cook the rice flour, wrap it up, and it's done. It's not anything special! Let Donglan and the others come over tomorrow and they'll basically learn how to make it. Then they can eat it more often."

The village chief's eyes lit up. "Is it that simple? That's a great idea! If we learn it, we can eat it every day!"

Qin also said, "We just want something new. The filling is made from home-cooked dishes. It can be all vegetarian or you can add some minced meat. It's very flexible. We just want to be full, so any filling is fine."

The village chief was intrigued, and gradually, his initial unease disappeared.

Finally, we got down to business. "It hasn't rained in a long time, and it's getting hotter and hotter. The fields are very dry, and even the irrigation ditches are almost dry. If this continues, the harvest will be in jeopardy. I feel very heavy-hearted. I talked with a few clan chiefs, and they all said that a severe drought is likely to occur."

The village chief sighed heavily, slapped his thigh, and said helplessly, "This is just a guess, and we don't know if it's true, but we have to make preparations in advance so that we won't be caught off guard. The clan elders' idea is to find a way to pump the water from the river into the irrigation canal and then let it flow into the fields."

Old Mo went out every day, so he naturally knew about the abnormal weather. His expression became serious, and he asked, "Have you thought of a solution? Should we still do it the old way, with each household carrying water?"

"Hey!" The village chief sighed again and shook his head. "I can't believe it. It's not a solution for everyone to fetch water from the river. People have fallen into the river before and almost couldn't be rescued. It's too dangerous."

"We're all old folks, our minds aren't what they used to be, and we can't think of any solutions, so we've come to you. You guys have the sharpest minds in the village; look, even ordinary things can be transformed into delicious food in your hands! Please help me think of a solution!"

The Mo family members exchanged bewildered glances. How did they become the most intelligent ones? If they were truly intelligent, they would have been rich long ago!

Grandma Mo waved her hand, "It's not that we're smart. We're just poor ghosts who are starving and just came up with these ideas out of nowhere."

The village chief believed that there were some clever people in the Mo family and was unwilling to let them go. "That's good too. You can all help think about it. Maybe you can actually come up with a solution!"

The Mo family was both amused and exasperated. How could they possibly be so capable?! This was outrageous!

But no matter what the Mo family said, the village chief would say, "It's alright, just think about it whenever you have time. There's no real drought yet! The more people think, the more ideas we might come up with."

"Mom! You're not letting me stay for dinner again!"
