Chapter 29
Everyone seemed to sense that the two had something to say to each other, so after finishing their meal, everyone wisely slipped away first.
Jiang Yi hadn't expected her roommates to be so unreasonable. After she put the used bowl in the designated recycling bin area, she turned around and saw Xu Wang waiting for her. She couldn't help but take a deep breath before walking over.
The two walked out with the flow of people, went down the steps of the cafeteria, and headed towards a less crowded path.
It was already evening, and the sunset on the horizon was orange-yellow with purple hues, like a fairy's shawl floating in the air. The nearby flowers carried a sweet fragrance on the breeze, and the two people standing in the shady path lined with ginkgo trees were speechless for a moment.
Finally, Xu Wang spoke up, breaking the slightly quiet silence. He put his hands behind his head, a faint smile on his lips, and asked, "It seems that my appearance has caused you some trouble?"
Xu Wang's words brought Jiang Yi's already guilty feelings to a peak. She quickly waved her hand and explained, "No, no, it's just that when I suddenly found out you like me, I felt... a little... strange."
It's not that it's strange, it's just that I feel lost and confused.
She explained anxiously, afraid of upsetting him, but when she turned her head, she saw the boy next to her smiling with bright, shining eyes.
Jiang Yi was a little confused and asked somewhat slowly, "What are you laughing at?"
Xu Wang paused for a moment, organized his thoughts, and then slowly said, "Yes, I know, I did cause you trouble."
Jiang Yi remained silent.
She was a little unsure of what she should say.
Actually, I didn't find him troublesome. I was just a little flustered and at a loss, and I didn't know how to face her.
So, while she was still silent, thinking about how to express her thoughts, he had already spoken.
"Therefore, I am willing to give you time to digest this slowly."
"Okay, sure." In the end, she only gave a blank, wooden reply, her mind still a jumble of thoughts.
"However, while you're processing this, could I ask you out, just like a normal friend? After all, there are still many things I don't understand here that I'd like to ask you." Jiang Yi didn't really want to go out, but his last sentence made it impossible for her to refuse.
In the end, she agreed.
The two walked quietly for a while, and then he escorted her back to her dormitory. They said goodbye downstairs. When Xu Wang left, the streetlights downstairs were already on, their dim yellow light casting a pale yellow glow on the purple paulownia trees that were in full bloom next to them.
Back in the dorm, her roommates, who had been waiting for her, immediately crowded around her, their eyes wide with interest, and asked, "So, so, are you two together yet?"
Are you together?
Jiang Yi looked at the three of them in silence, and finally, under their radiant gazes, slowly shook her head.
The three of them scoffed and went about their own business.
After a while, Guan Nini, who was doing her homework with a ballpoint pen and a calculus book, turned around and asked, "Since you two weren't together, what were you doing out for so long?"
"Um." Jiang Yi recalled the scene between the two of them just now and said, "We just... took a walk."
Guan Nini wailed, "Such a beautiful night, such a lovely time, and you two just want to wander around like that?"
Jiang Yi didn't understand what was different about tonight compared to other nights.
Another roommate patted Guan Nini on the shoulder, signaling her not to get too excited, and said, "What's the rush? Maybe this is just the romance between the two of them."
Jiang Yi still didn't understand romance, but when she thought about the two of them strolling along the quiet tree-lined path tonight, as if the whole world had shrunk to just the two of them, that feeling was indeed incomparably wonderful.
Jiang Yi's heart started racing belatedly. She glanced at her roommates and realized they were no longer paying attention to her. She suppressed the faint smile on her lips, quickly climbed into bed, put on her headphones, turned on some music, and started listening.
The first song was a tender love song, and for some reason, I actually found it quite pleasant to listen to.
After military training ended, Xu Wang got a little tanned, but he was still the fairest among all the boys.
Jiang Yi had been worried that he might be a little disappointed, but he didn't seem to be affected at all. Jiang Yi had prepared a lot of words of comfort, but she swallowed them all back.
After that, Xu Wang started attending classes and joining clubs.
Before looking for a club, he asked Jiang Yi to go for a night run together and asked her about choosing a club.
The two had already reached the lakeside and run quite a distance. Both of them had sweat on their foreheads. Jiang Yi wiped the sweat from her forehead with a white towel, looked at Xu Wang, who was wearing a white tracksuit with black trim, and thought for a moment before saying, "I don't know which other clubs are good, but the two I'm in seem pretty good. I wonder what interests you?"
Before she could finish speaking, she could already see a smile playing on the lips of the boy next to her.
The fish that were swimming in the school's artificial lake at midnight had just flown back to the island in the center of the lake. Under the lights, the boy's smile was clean but carried a hint of mischief that was hard to describe.
Jiang Yi then realized that this person was doing it on purpose.
After a helpless twitch of her lips, she said irritably, "You should find a club you like, not one based on my preferences."
Xu Wang didn't seem to care much and said, "I just want to be in the same club as you. Of course, I'll only take your suggestions as advice and I may not actually join."
Seeing his serious expression, Jiang Yi felt relieved and recommended a few clubs to him. In the end, Xu Wang chose a technology-related club that he was in with her.
It's October again. Before the holiday, Xu Wang asked her, "Are you going to work part-time this year?"
Jiang Yi shook her head and said, "I haven't found a suitable one this year."
Xu Wang had been thinking that if she had a part-time job, she might not have time to ask her out, but upon hearing this, he laughed and said, "Then, let's go for a walk."
Thinking of what happened last year, she added, "However, there shouldn't be any tour guide fees this year."
Actually, Jiang Yi had a vague feeling that he would ask her out during the National Day holiday, so when Guan Nini asked her if she wanted to take a part-time job this year, she refused. Now, looking at his teasing smile, Jiang Yi rolled her eyes and said, "No, no."
Xu Wang returned her a smile.
