Zhang Hongmei had the greatest faith in the Chinese people's ability to imitate. She had a storage ring, and if all else failed, she could smuggle herself back. She was determined to bring some benefits to the farmers.
After the aunties and grandmas in the canteen finished tying up the dishes, they went back to cook lunch. Wang Xinyi didn't help with tying them up. Instead, she pushed the tidied-up utensils back one trip after another. By the time everyone finished tying them up, she had made five trips back and forth, carrying all the bowls and chopsticks back, which saved a lot of time.
Zhang Hongmei was still working on two rows. Since she could keep up, she didn't try to be a hero. After four more rounds of harvesting, lunch finally arrived. This time, the lunch break was an hour, but most people went to bundle wheat after eating. Only the younger ones were told to rest.
According to Wang Hongxi, they harvested 150 mu of wheat that morning.
Before starting work, Wang Hongxi selected twenty people to carry wheat back. This was really hard work, and each load was estimated to weigh more than 200 jin (100 kg).
By 5 p.m., all the bundled wheat in the field had been carried back. Wang Hongxi told everyone to bundle it back, and an hour and a half later, all the wheat that had been harvested that day was delivered to the threshing ground.
Zhang Hongmei didn't go to the cafeteria for dinner. "Wang Ying, you go eat. Don't worry about me. I need to go back, take a shower, and go to sleep. I'm too tired."
Wang Ying looked at Zhang Hongmei with concern, "I brought this back for you; you haven't eaten anything all day."
"That's fine." Zhang Hongmei lit the fire to boil water; she wouldn't need it herself, but the two of them would need it when they came back.
She locked the door, went back inside, and went straight into her spatial dimension. She took a shower first; harvesting wheat was very dirty, and Zhang Hongmei felt like she was covered in a layer of black mud. After washing herself clean, she sat in the bathtub, soaked in the spiritual spring water, and drank a large cup of it. With both of these actions combined, Zhang Hongmei immediately felt like she had come back to life.
The clothes need to be washed outside; after all, the bathroom floor can't be left dry.
When Wang Ying returned, Zhang Hongmei had already tidied up, and the thermos was filled with boiling water.
"Hongmei, you eat first. Tonight we'll have steamed buns made with a mixture of wheat, corn, and water, as well as stewed fish with potato noodles."
"I can't eat this. Are you going to eat it or not? If not, I'll take it to Stone."
"I'm full, I'll go deliver it."
"Hehe, I'm fine now. You should take a shower and lock the door."
Zhang Hongmei carried the food that Wang Ying had brought back to Liu Maocai's house, and happened to run into Shitou at his doorstep.
"Here's a stone."
"Sister Hongmei, haven't you eaten yet? There's still some bread you gave me at home, would you like to have some?"
"No need, it's alright. I'll go back and cook some noodles. This is my portion, you can have it. I'm going back to rest."
When Zhang Hongmei returned, Wang Xinyi was still not home, so cooking was no easy task.
Zhang Hongmei goes into the space to sleep, then reads and studies when she wakes up, and goes back to sleep when she gets sleepy.
The next day, we arrived at the wheat field at four o'clock again. There were ten fewer people harvesting wheat today. The village elders were too busy to turn and dry the wheat, so the ten people who stayed behind were the ones who would do the work. It was estimated that this batch of wheat could be threshed by tomorrow afternoon.
It was the same as yesterday's gesture: "Auntie, let me try cutting three rows first. If it doesn't work, then you can help me."
"Okay, just say so if you get tired."
Zhang Hongmei managed to keep up with three rows this time, and that's how she persisted.
I harvested over 120 mu today, and carried the harvested wheat back to the threshing ground in the evening.
Liu Maocai is on duty tonight; this wheat harvest is truly exhausting. Farmers have it so tough; "Who knows the hardship behind every grain of rice on the plate?"
On the afternoon of the third day, ten more people were missing, and we had to help the old oxen thresh the grain. One hundred and eleven mu of land for the entire day.
After three more days of work, the wheat from all 700 acres of land was finally harvested.
Even so, everyone didn't relax; instead, they worked even harder, and the job wasn't considered complete until the wheat grains were in the warehouse.
Moreover, half of the people watched as wheat straw was burned in the field, mainly because they were afraid it would damage the corn stalks next to it.
In just one day, 700 acres of land were cleared by fire, and everyone gathered at the threshing floor. The wheat grains from the third day were all stored in the warehouse.
Zhang Hongmei heard Liu Maocai say that they shouldn't have put the items in the warehouse, but there was no other way, as they were all left outside in case of a sudden rain and they wouldn't have time to bring them in.
Zhang Hongmei actually thought the wheat grains from the previous three days were dry, but since she didn't know anything about this, she didn't say anything to avoid making a fool of herself.
Heaven really took pity on us this time; even after all the wheat grains were stored, there was still no sign of rain.
Now everyone is feeling uncertain. Will there be another severe drought like in previous years?
Wang Hongxi originally wanted to deliver the grain to the state, but everyone was afraid, so they decided to postpone delivering the wheat and wait and see.
During dinner, the group discussed whether or not to go farming. Opinions differed. "Quiet down, everyone. Listen to me," said one of the farmers. "Last year we planted vegetables, and our income in just over a month was nearly two thousand yuan. I'm thinking of setting aside one hundred mu for vegetables, and what about planting potatoes on the rest?"
Zhang Hongmei held the bowl, but her mind was racing. "Uncle, the corn I was able to get was planted after the wheat harvest. This is a new variety, and its growing period is only 120 days."
"Really? Hongmei, are you telling the truth?"
"Yes, I'll drive out to find them today. If all goes well, I can bring them back today."
Wang Hongxi was so excited that she stammered a little. "That's great! Even if there's no rain in the second half of the year, we can bring water down from the mountain. What's everyone's opinion?"
"agree."
Everyone agreed on their opinions except for the older people who remained silent.
"Hongxi, if we don't nurture this land, I'm afraid next year's harvest will be poor." The old man was genuinely worried.
"Second Master, shall I go see if I can get some fertilizer? If so, we won't have to worry about a poor harvest?"
"fertilizer?"
"Yes, this is foreign technology, and it's already being produced in our country. I'll go ask about it today, but don't get your hopes up too high. I'll do my best." Zhang Hongmei's space really doesn't have this; it's not as good as the corn, which she has in her own space. She'll have to ask Zhang Shouyi about this.
After finishing her meal, Zhang Hongmei left amidst everyone's expectant gazes, feeling immense pressure.
Wang Ying followed behind. "Hongmei, I'll go with you."
"No, I need to see the people I meet today, not strangers. You can stay home and go play in the mountains."
"But this is my job."
"It's okay, I'll give you the day off. Go ahead, I'm in a hurry."
Zhang Hongmei loaded the things for Huang Ying into the car and set off.
Upon arriving in the city, they stopped directly at the post office, firstly to deliver something to Huang Ying, and secondly to call Zhang Shouyi.
Huang Ying was very surprised to see Zhang Hongmei. "Why are you back at this time? Didn't you recover well in the capital? Why are you so dark?"
Zhang Hongmei rolled her eyes at Huang Ying, "I came back ten days ago, wasn't I helping Mai Qiu?"
