After that, I wrote letters to Wang Xinyi and Zhao Tiancheng, and also to Zhao Haozheng. I also wrote a letter each to Carlos and Wyatt. I made it clear to them that I might not be able to write back promptly, and that they could discuss and handle any matters together.
There were seventeen letters in total. It took Zhang Hongmei more than two hours to finish writing them. Zhang Shouyi helped her pack them into envelopes.
Looking at the letters his wife wrote to their goddaughter, he felt a pang of jealousy. Why was she so good to her? And each letter was three pages long, whereas when she wrote to him, it was only a few dozen words. The difference was too great.
Zhang Hongmei labeled each envelope containing a number, and the rest with her name.
Zhang Shouyi helped glue it back together and set it aside.
He pulled Zhang Hongmei to sit on the bed, constantly massaging her arm that she had been using to write the letter. Her arm and wrist must have been sore from writing so many words for two hours.
"Thank you, Brother Zhang."
"Why are you being so polite with me? You're my wife, and I'm your husband. There's no need for formalities between us."
Zhang Hongmei was too lazy to argue with him and nodded.
“I still have two ginseng roots. I’ll give one to Huang Meihua and one to Wang Xinyi. Ningning’s birthday is in a little over a month, Daniel’s is on Christmas Day, and Annie’s is after Christmas. I’ve prepared all the gifts, so let’s take them with us.”
"Wife, what should we give the child?"
"Your collection is in the rings. We'll take them out and see which one suits us. If not, we can each have two. If we still can't communicate normally next year, we can ask Huang Meihua and the others to give us another set next year."
Zhang Shouyi was pleased; his wife was using his things and didn't treat him like a stranger.
"Okay, let's look around. They're all old items, I don't know if we'll find anything suitable."
"Try to choose one; it's not realistic to buy anything else now."
Both of their consciousnesses entered the ring, and the two consciousnesses suddenly collided, causing their bodies to tremble slightly involuntarily. Zhang Shouyi, in particular, felt a tingling sensation throughout his body.
Zhang Shouyi snapped out of his daze, grabbed Zhang Hongmei, and showered her with kisses.
Zhang Hongmei was startled. What was wrong with this man? But she couldn't overpower him, and although he was very anxious, he didn't make a move. This reassured Zhang Hongmei considerably, and she never dared to be alone with him again.
Zhang Shouyi moved downwards, lightly pecking at her neck, his breath unsteady as he whispered, "Wife, did you feel it just now? Did you feel the collision of our souls?"
Zhang Hongmei was also breathless, dodging Zhang Shouyi's kiss. "Brother Zhang, let me go. If you do this again, I won't talk to you anymore."
"How is it? Is it like this?"
When Zhang Shouyi finally released Zhang Hongmei and saw his beautiful wife, he couldn't control himself anymore.
"You'd better leave now, I need to rest." Zhang Hongmei was really afraid of him; she couldn't handle this guy anymore.
"Wife, my room is right here."
"Then I'll go back to my room."
Zhang Shouyi hugged Zhang Hongmei, who was trying to get up. "Wife, can't we do it together?"
Zhang Hongmei shook her head firmly, "No way! Don't even think about it."
Zhang Shouyi knew her temperament. "Wife, let's talk a little longer. I definitely won't stay. Don't worry."
"But you can't always do this."
"Wife, you are too cruel. I am your husband, how can you be so heartless?"
Okay, okay, don't be angry. I'll try my best to control myself. We haven't picked out gifts for our daughter and son yet.
Zhang Hongmei rolled her eyes at him; this guy was a typical example of someone who would take an inch and then a mile.
I rummaged through the rings for a while, but none of them seemed suitable for a child.
"Wife, let's give them the most valuable ones and let them keep them."
"That's all we can do. What else can we do? I really can't think of anything else to give them."
In the end, the two decided to give Annie two sets of jewelry, both with exceptionally fine jade. The two boys each received two jade pendants, only the designs were different.
Zhang Hongmei found three small boxes and packed them separately. She then wrapped them in several layers of cotton cloth, and finally put them, along with the letter, into her purse. Feeling there was still some space and fearing they might break if shaken, she filled the purse with a lot of cotton. This way, even if it fell, it wouldn't be damaged.
I felt relieved after everything was packed up.
Zhang Shouyi lingered there for another half hour before Zhang Hongmei finally kicked him out.
Carrying the briefcase, he found General Yang and said, "Have someone deliver this to the other side. Give it to Long Wu; the address is on this letter, so have him find someone to send it over."
"Yes, sir. Shall I escort you back tomorrow?"
"No need, you can just stay here and watch."
Xiao Li wasn't too surprised to see the leader enter. He knew Hongmei wouldn't let the leader stay overnight, so she had already prepared the leader's bed.
Zhang Hongmei lay on the hard bed, wide awake. In those few short hours, Zhang Shouyi had dispelled the initial awkwardness between them.
It's so good to be back; even the air feels sweet. Even if it's not as convenient as in the US, this is my home. One day, it will develop far beyond any other country.
Zhang Hongmei couldn't sleep, not because of jet lag. She was simply excited. After nearly three years, she had finally set foot on this land again.
Thinking of my acquaintances, I really want to go back to Liujiatun right away.
But I still have two elderly relatives back home in the capital. And I have friends and classmates I need to see. I can easily recall their faces now, as if it all happened yesterday.
I should first go to Q City to see these foreign companies. They all came through me, so I have an obligation to go and meet them to see if there's anything I can help them with.
I don't know if Liu Jingze is still their manager. He graduated last year; I wonder what he's doing now? I haven't asked because I'm afraid Zhang Shouyi will be unhappy.
I wonder if I'll be able to see him in Q City? And how is Song Zigan doing? He's a senior now; time really flies.
Thinking of Hao Dan. I wonder what that young lady is doing after graduation? She's probably working at a newspaper, right? Yu Hongxia, that woman, has run such a successful underwear factory while also maintaining her primary job; she's a real powerhouse.
Judging from Zhang Shouyi's words, Wang Ying had matured a lot, and he actually preferred Wang Ying to run between the two places. However, Zhao Haozheng had plenty of time now, so they would wait until later to discuss it.
Zhang Hongmei went through all the people she knew in the capital, her face beaming with smiles. She was about to see them all. Just imagining the scene filled her with anticipation.
I can't sleep no matter how much I toss and turn; I'm just too excited!
