Chapter 170 Going Up the Mountain

I'll still be updating at 3 PM today, let's give ourselves some motivation!

"Hehe, I've read a lot of books, you'll understand later." All the vegetables in the yard were dried, the sweet potatoes and potatoes were put into the cellar, and the peppers were strung up and hung by the door frame.

"Hongmei, I'm going to school tomorrow, do you want to come with me?"

“I’ll go too. We need to be early tomorrow. I’ll take the sweet potatoes and potatoes I brought for the principal.”

"You know, I also graduated from school, but I feel quite embarrassed that I didn't give anything as a gift."

"Aren't you overthinking it? You're still being supported by your family, while I'm giving away my own things. You can repay them when you're able to."

"That's all we can do. I'll miss the trip into the mountains again. I was hoping to find something of value."

"What could we possibly get? It hasn't rained, so forget about mushrooms and the like. There might be some fruit, but I figure people from other villages will definitely come up the mountain, so we probably won't get much."

"Sigh! It's difficult for everyone."

The next day, they tied the two baskets to the sides of the bicycle seat. Zhu Zi rode the bicycle, Er Ya sat in front, and Zhang Hongmei sat behind. Since it was still early and the principal hadn't arrived at school yet, they had to ask the gatekeeper to inform him.

The three of them felt better after getting on a bus. Thankfully, things these days are of good quality; otherwise, a bicycle from later generations would probably have been crushed.

The first bus was quite punctual; it wasn't late.

The teachers now turn a blind eye to the students' behavior. Due to the pressure of making a living, many students have dropped out of school, and only about fifty students have been able to persevere.

Physical education classes are no longer held to conserve students' energy.

After finishing four exams in the morning, Zhang Hongmei decided to go home, as she still wanted to find some fruit.

When she got back to the elementary school, the principal was waiting for her. "Hongmei, why did you bring so much food?"

“I still have plenty left. We eat from the communal pot, and I can’t eat much of what’s grown in our private plot. I’ll bring you more radishes and cabbages later, so you two can eat without worry.”

I remember how much Zhang Hongmei ate that year. My husband often talks about her, but he has never met the child.

"Autumn is over, why don't you come stay at my house for a few days?"

"No, I need to go up the mountain to check. I'll pick some pine nuts, hawthorns, and sour pears. There won't be any mushrooms this year. Why don't you come stay at my house for a few days? We can go up the mountain together."

"Neither of us can go up the mountain, so let's just stay home."

"Alright, I'm off. I'll let you try some sour pears when I pick them."

After returning home, Zhang Hongmei tidied up and then went into her spatial dimension to rest. She estimated that she could run 800 meters with top marks now, her stamina was excellent.

The next day, I went to tell Wang Qingshan that I wouldn't be herding sheep for the next few days, and that I would be cutting grass when I came back.

As Zhang Hongmei walked, she pondered whether she should go further in, since she had never been there before.

Before I knew it, I had reached the edge of the pool. This was the dividing line, and I had never gone any further. I gritted my teeth and went in.

Beyond the pond lies an endless pine forest; there are so many pine cones, I'll definitely collect a lot when I get back.

It took us more than two hours to walk through the woods alone. If it were the rainy season, there would probably be pine mushrooms everywhere. Breathing in the scent of pine wood was invigorating.

There weren't many wild grasses; even they struggled to survive under the towering banyan trees. The pine branches underfoot felt soft, and the ground was littered with fallen pine cones. Squirrels roamed the trees, and wild rabbits were frequently seen running across the ground.

I picked up pine cones as I walked, and once they were full, I put them into my ring. By the time I left the pine forest, I had collected at least three baskets of pine cones. Then a mountain blocked my way. The mountain was full of rocks, and there were very few pine trees. It was a far cry from the pine forest I had just left, and it felt desolate.

There's no way around this mountain, so I guess I'll just have to climb it. The whole way is just rocks. They're all the same size.

When you reach the top of the mountain and look across, you see a valley surrounded by mountains on all sides, all you can see is lush greenery, but you don't know exactly what it is.

I rushed down the road and finally arrived at almost one o'clock.

What I'm stepping on must be ginseng, right? My goodness, there are more than ten of them. I took out my tools, squatted down, and started digging.

So excited they didn't even notice their hunger. It was three hours later by the time all ten-odd human-shaped plants had been planted into the space. They couldn't stay any longer; they had to get back quickly, or something bad would happen. If they were too late, the villagers would come looking for them. They'd find an excuse to stay here a few more days tomorrow.

The excitement of getting the ginseng hadn't subsided, so it only took two hours to go up and down the mountain and through the pine forest.

When they got back to the village, it was past dinner time, but Shi Tou still made her a bowl of dumpling soup.

"Uncle, I'm not busy now, and I'd like to go to the city for a few days. I'll leave tomorrow morning. Could you please tell Wang Qingshan for me?"

"Go ahead. Your third aunt will give you radishes and cabbages, so you can stay outside for a few days without worry."

"Okay."

She was still chuckling as she lay in bed after washing up in the room. Let's forgive her obsession with ginseng.

The next day, at four o'clock, while it was still dark, we went up the mountain and headed straight for the valley.

Here, Zhang Hongmei was like a mouse that had fallen into a rice jar, feeling incredibly happy.

There are plenty of yams and Panax notoginseng here, and finally, we found the mosquito-repelling herb.

There was also a large patch of Polygonum multiflorum. The larger ones were all moved into the space.

Just as Zhang Hongmei was enjoying the beautiful weather, she suddenly heard a wolf howling, which startled her. Judging from the sound, it shouldn't be close, so she didn't pay much attention and continued her thorough search, looking up any unfamiliar plants in books, which made her search quite slowly.

There's also wild ginger and rehmannia.

When I got hungry, I took out some food, and by the time I felt tired, it was almost dark.

He looked into the space and saw the ginseng he had planted in the ground and grinned foolishly.

The next day, they landed on a battlefield between tigers and wolves as soon as they emerged from the space.

Oh my god, I was so scared I went back into the space. I patted my wildly beating heart. Next time I'll definitely check the outside situation first; this was too thrilling. Luckily I reacted quickly, or I would have been cannon fodder.

Watching the battle from within the space, a tiger and three wolves were evenly matched. Gradually, the tiger began to falter. Zhang Hongmei thought about helping the tiger. She happened to be behind one of the wolves, so she took her electric baton and stun it, then entered the space again.

The tiger was stunned. This animal was incredibly fast and had even helped him. Now, with only two bastards left, the tiger grew more courageous with each battle. The fight ended in less than ten minutes.

But the first wolf that had fallen got up, and the tiger pounced and killed it. It then left, covered in wounds.

Zhang Hongmei observed for a while before coming out and putting the wolf into her ring. She then quickly ran to a few fruit trees on the left side of the valley.

There were hawthorns and sour pears; I didn't hold back at all and picked them all in one day, a total of five bags. I put them all in my ring; there were too many for me to eat myself.
