Chapter 56 Buying a Puppy

The price was reasonable; it wasn't too outrageous. He wouldn't have accepted the ginseng if he wasn't making a profit.

Cheng Qingyan pondered for a moment. In fact, she herself did not know the price, but based on the price of the last sale, it should be about the same.

"Alright, I'll sell it to the shopkeeper."

The shopkeeper happily went to get the money for Cheng Qingyan; he could make quite a bit from this deal.

Including the common herbs from before, the total is eighty-five taels and four mace.

After handing the money to Cheng Qingyan, Cheng Qingyan kept a small piece of silver and gave the rest to Ye Lingyu.

Cheng Qingyan gave it to her naturally, and Ye Lingyu accepted it without any hesitation.

The shopkeeper chuckled, "Young Master Cheng and Madam Cheng have such a deep affection for each other; I'm so envious!"

Ye Lingyu was a little shy; she wasn't used to others talking about her relationship with Cheng Qingyan to her face.

Such private matters should be discussed in private.

Cheng Qingyan knew that Ye Lingyu was quite sensitive about these things and had a thin skin, hence her blushing cheeks.

"Then we'll have to trouble you today, shopkeeper. We'll take our leave now."

The shopkeeper escorted him to the door: "Young Master Cheng, if you need any more medicinal herbs next time, please remember to look for me."

"No problem, goodbye!"

Meng Chuying knew that Ye Lingyu was carrying more than eighty taels of silver, and everyone looked like a bad guy to her!

They were extremely cautious and vigilant, wary of the pedestrians around them, and very nervous.

Left with no other choice, Ye Lingyu grabbed her hand: "Chu Ying, come back a little. We don't have this little bit of money that we'd let someone rob us."

Meng Chuying looked around suspiciously: "Sister Ye, eighty taels is a lot, be careful!"

In her village, even the wealthiest families only had a dozen or so taels of silver, according to what her friend had told her.

Her friend said she heard it from other friends, but she didn't know the specifics.

"Don't worry about that, our goal today is to shop, shop, shop!"

"Buy whatever you want, whether it's delicious food or fun toys. It's almost Chinese New Year, let's have some fun! We must leave with a full load today!" Cheng Qingyan's voice wasn't loud, but she spoke with great excitement.

Although Ye Lingyu disagreed, she didn't spoil Cheng Qingyan's fun. When Cheng Qingyan bought things, she was responsible for paying for them.

That's what they said, but neither Ye Lingyu nor Meng Chuying bought anything. Cheng Qingyan's basket was almost full, and she even put some trinkets into Meng Chuying's small basket.

They bought a whole sheep and had it delivered to the oxcart.

After that, I bought a few more fish, because they are a must-have on the New Year's table, symbolizing abundance year after year.

They even came across someone selling winter bamboo shoots, which made Cheng Qingyan extremely hungry!

I wanted to buy some, but Ye Lingyu said there's a large bamboo forest on the mountain near her place. If we go look for it, we should be able to have enough for two meals, right?

The household items have become more refined; things like teacups, which weren't available before, are now all provided.

I was talking about getting a dog before, and today I ran into someone selling puppies in town.

When Cheng Qingyan and the others went to check, there were only two left. In the bamboo cage next to them, there was also a kitten, huddled to the side, trembling.

The seller was asking 100 coins for each puppy, saying that their dogs would grow up to be good dogs.

The two little ones snuggled together, seemingly to keep warm, or perhaps to cherish the time they could still spend together.

Their brothers and sisters have all been bought, and they will soon be separated, won't they?

The little guys are so cute. Cheng Qingyan squatted down and patted one of their little heads: "What are the genders of these two puppies?"

"Gender? They're both male, two male puppies~" The seller of the puppies was afraid that Cheng Qingyan wouldn't believe him, so he picked one up to show her.

Cheng Qingyan turned to look at Ye Lingyu and Meng Chuying's reactions; they both seemed to like it too.

"We've taken both, can we have the kitten?" The kitten huddled to the side, trembling, and didn't seem to be in good spirits.

Cheng Qingyan tried to tease it with some grass, but it didn't move.

The seller was naturally aware that there was something wrong with their cat, and cats are not worth much anyway.

After Cheng Qingyan expressed her desire to buy a dog and get a cat as a free gift, the seller agreed without hesitation.

After Cheng Qingyan paid, the seller also gave them the bamboo cage that held the kitten.

This trip has been incredibly rewarding, and it's not over yet.

Wear new clothes for the New Year.

I bought two sets of clothes for everyone, and the clothes all had some red fabric on them.

The two sets I bought for Meng Chuying were both a bit too big, because she's still growing and her body changes every now and then.

When they finally returned, the oxcart was loaded with even more goods than when they came.

The oxcart was borrowed from the village chief; it seems they'll have to ask him to buy them an ox as well.

With more land at home, Meng Chuying's family also handed over their land to them to cultivate.

The original four mu of land, plus the fifteen mu of wasteland that was newly purchased this year and is still rotting, plus the ten mu of land owned by Meng Chuying's family.

With a total of thirty acres of land, in just half a year, she went from being penniless to becoming a landlord.

On the way back, she swayed back and forth in the oxcart, while two small dogs and a cat huddled in a corner deliberately sheltered from the wind.

Both puppies are black and white, one with more black fur and the other with more white fur.

The black dog with lots of fur has a tuft of white fur on its forehead.

The one with more white fur has a black back and the tip of its tail. Its chest and legs are white.

They haven't grown up yet, but they look kind of cute right now.

After returning home, I let the kittens and puppies out.

Surprisingly, the three little animals were quite outgoing and didn't seem afraid at all.

It seemed scared when it first landed, but after smelling everyone's scent, it licked Cheng Qingyan's fingers.

Meng Chuying squatted down and stroked the puppy's fur, looking very happy.

Ye Lingyu was tidying up the things they had bought today. It was the coldest season of the year, and Cheng Qingyan had added new quilts to both of their beds.

With Meng Chuying by their side, the little ones were fine. Cheng Qingyan went over to help Ye Lingyu pack her things.

I got home early today; the sun was still high in the sky when I arrived.

The sheep was butchered into eight pieces.

Cheng Qingyan picked up a leg of lamb and asked Ye Lingyu, "Wife, should we keep these meats and fish hanging in the kitchen?"

"Why don't you keep some of it and leave a small portion for us to eat?"

The meat from last time was hanging in the kitchen. It attracted the covetous eyes of two cats, who craved it for days and refused to leave.

"Alright, let's have roasted lamb chops today!"

Ye Lingyu asked, puzzled, "Roast? How do you roast it?"

Cheng Qingyan smiled mysteriously: "Didn't we buy charcoal? I'll take care of today's lamb chops!"

"And, my wife, where did you put the bamboo you cut down last time?"
