Chapter 6: Tracing the Past

Chapter 6: Tracing the Past

1. Huilongdu

Late one night a few days later, Qin Chuan's phone finally rang. It was Wang Yang.

Qin Chuan immediately jumped up from the bed and answered the phone nervously, his voice a little dry: "How is it? Are the results out?"

On the other end of the phone, Wang Yang's voice was filled with fatigue and a hint of disappointment that was hard to conceal: "Well, the results are out."

Qin Chuan's heart sank suddenly, and he had a bad feeling.

"The DNA on that wig," Wang Yang paused, as if he couldn't begin. "It doesn't match the DNA samples stored in the database for Ouyang Lanlan, or the three other known victims: Cui Li, Jiang Tingting, and Wen Jing."

"What?!" Qin Chuan screamed, almost unable to believe his ears, "Impossible! Absolutely impossible! Are you mistaken? Is the sample contaminated? Or..."

"The lab ran three comparisons, and the results are consistent," Wang Yang said in a low, firm voice. "Old Qin, accept the reality. It's just an ordinary synthetic wig, the kind you can buy online or at a wig shop for a few dozen yuan. Besides dust, there's only a tiny amount of untraceable dandruff and oil. No biological information related to the victim of the December 4th case has been detected."

Qin Chuan felt a stream of icy water pour over his head, instantly chilling his entire body. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The phone nearly slipped from his trembling hands.

"Forget it, Lao Qin." Wang Yang sighed on the other end of the phone, his tone full of consolation, "Maybe we really are mistaken. The world is so big, there are so many people with similar voices, and there are also many people with strange laughs. Maybe it's just a coincidence. Don't dwell on it anymore, and don't take any more risks. It's for your own good, and for Ouyang's good."

Qin Chuan couldn't hear what Wang Yang said next. He hung up the phone numbly and stood alone in the cold darkness of his rented room, with the bustling yet distant nightscape of Linzhou visible outside the window.

The overwhelming sense of loss and confusion overwhelmed him like a tide.

Is it really a mistake?

All the intuition, all the suspicion, that strange room, that carefully preserved wig... are they all pointing to a wrong destination?

What about Ouyang Lanlan's fear? What about the conversation she heard that night? What about the lingering sense of disharmony surrounding Huang Qiang?

How to explain all this?

He leaned against the wall, slowly slid down to the ground, and buried his face in his hands. The goal that had sustained him for four years seemed to collapse at this moment, leaving behind endless nothingness and a deeper fog.

The night is silent.

The next day, Qin Chuan found Ouyang Lanlan and told her the results of the test, but he did not intend to give up. He believed in her intuition and his own judgment. So many coincidences, are they just coincidences?

"I need to go back to Longdu." Qin Chuan made the decision almost immediately, his tone firm, "We must find out the details of Huang Qiang. His past is the key to solving all the mysteries! If he is the murderer, his motives and his criminal pattern must be hidden in his upbringing!"

"I'll go with you!" Ouyang Lanlan blurted out almost without hesitation, took a step forward, her eyes extremely firm, without any retreat.

Qin Chuan frowned and wanted to refuse, his tone worried: "You? Longdu is..." to you. He was a little worried that Ouyang Lanlan still had fearful memories of Longdu.

"I've heard the voices of those two beasts!" Ouyang Lanlan interrupted him. Her voice was not loud, but it was filled with unquestionable strength. "And there are some details that you men can't ask. Maybe I can help. One more person means more strength. I must go." Her reasons were sufficient and irrefutable. In the depths of her eyes, besides fear, there was a determination to pursue the truth for herself and other victims.

Qin Chuan saw the unquestionable determination in her eyes, knowing he couldn't stop her, and finally nodded heavily. "Okay. But follow my instructions. Don't act on your own."

2. Difficult Tracking

Longdu City. Four years had passed, and the city seemed largely unchanged, only more dated, like a faded photograph. The familiar, dry, cold air, tinged with soot and dust, made Ouyang Lanlan feel a wave of physical discomfort and fear as soon as she stepped off the train. Her stomach twisted slightly. She took a deep breath of the icy air, forcing down her surging emotions and those chilling memories.

Using the address on Wang Yang's old ID card, they found Huang Qiang's old housing complex. However, all they saw was a vast, walled expanse of rubble and broken walls, its shattered windows like dark, piercing eyes. Giant, scarlet characters for "demolition" were etched across every remaining wall, glaring against the winter's bleakness. The demolition project was nearing completion, and the massive machinery sat quietly to the side, like a dormant giant.

The two stood at the edge of the ruins, a cold wind blowing through, stirring up dust and scraps of paper. Ouyang Lanlan wrapped herself tightly in her down jacket, feeling the chill rising from her feet. Qin Chuan frowned and looked around.

"Uncle, I want to ask you, do you know where the Huang family who used to live in this area moved to?" Qin Chuan saw an old man sitting in front of a nearby convenience store that had not moved out and was still open for business, basking in the sun, so he quickly stepped forward to ask and handed him a cigarette.

The old man raised his cloudy eyes, glanced at him, took the cigarette, lit it slowly, took a sip, and then said vaguely: "The Huang family? Which Huang family? Oh, you mean Huang Degui's family? They moved away a long time ago! This place has been demolished for more than three years, and the people have long since dispersed! Who still remembers where they moved to?" He waved his hand, as if to drive away something unlucky, and lowered his voice, "Aside from a few familiar neighbors, that family doesn't usually interact with others. Not many people know them."

The clues seemed to be cut off all of a sudden. Qin Chuan was unwilling to give up and decided to try the police station that had jurisdiction over the area.

The neighborhood police station's lobby was sparsely populated, appearing somewhat deserted. They approached the household registration consultation window, where a young police officer sat behind them, looking down at his phone.

"Hello, comrade, I want to ask you something about someone." Qin Chuan tried his best to make his tone sound calm.

The young police officer looked up, took in their dusty appearance and ordinary attire, and asked in a formal manner, "What's going on?"

"We want to check for a man named Huang Qiang who used to live in this area. We want to see if any of our local police officers are familiar with him, or check his previous academic records or where his neighbors moved to." Qin Chuan explained.

The young policeman frowned and said in a formulaic tone of rejection: "I'm sorry, household registration information is personal privacy and cannot be checked by non-police officers. If you have a report or formal cooperative investigation documents, you can ask the local police to send a letter to us so that we can cooperate with the investigation." His eyes were scrutinizing, as if he was guessing their purpose.

"Comrade, please be flexible. We have something very important to discuss..." Ouyang Lanlan couldn't help but speak in an urgent tone.

"Rules are rules." The young policeman interrupted her, his tone a little tougher, "Without the procedures, no one can come!" He stopped looking at them and lowered his head to continue looking at his phone.

After a disappointing encounter, the two men walked out of the police station and stood on the cold street, feeling powerless. The modern management system was like an icy wall, isolating them from the outside world.

"Let's go find the old community director!" Qin Chuan refused to give up. Relying on his memory and the vague information Wang Yang provided, he remembered that this community seemed to have had a very responsible old director. After asking around, he finally found the home of the old director, who had retired many years ago, in an old building not far from the demolition area.

After knocking on the door, an old man with gray hair, reading glasses and a hunched body appeared at the door. The faint aroma of food and Chinese medicine wafted out of the house.

"Who is it?" the old man said in a hoarse voice.

"Hello, Director Liu, sorry to bother you, we are..." Qin Chuan quickly explained his purpose, handed over his ID (although it was expired), and cleverly said that his purpose was to "find an important old neighbor witness", concealing the seriousness of the case.

The old director pushed up his reading glasses and looked at them suspiciously. After a moment's hesitation, he let them in. The room was small, and the furnishings were simple and old-fashioned.

After a long conversation, and Qin Chuan handing over the cigarettes he had bought for her, the old director shakily pulled out an old household register from a drawer. The pages were yellowed, the corners curled, and it was stained with tea and oil. The booklet was thick and smelled of old paper and dust.

"The Huang family... the Huang family..." The old man's skinny fingers, stained with saliva, slowly ran across the densely packed names and addresses, muttering, "Unit 2, Building 6, No. 3 Family Building, Pharmaceutical Factory... Oh, there's such a family. The head of the household is Huang Degui, his wife's surname is Wang, and they have two children: a younger brother named Huang Qiang and an older brother named Huang Chao."

He looked up, his eyes a little confused behind his reading glasses. "Where did they move to? I don't remember. They moved away in scattered places, so who would know? But his child, if I remember correctly, should have gone to Hongguang Primary School, right? It was the factory-run primary school for children, but it was later merged. I don't know if there are any records."

Hongguang Primary School! This is the only and clearest clue at the moment!

They bid farewell to the old director with profuse gratitude and immediately rushed to Hongguang Primary School. It had now been renamed "Longdu No. 9 Experimental Primary School," with its brand-new building, imposing electric gates, and a plastic running track on the playground. It was completely different from the factory-run primary school they remembered.

They asked the guard, a chubby middle-aged man in a security uniform. After hearing their purpose, he shook his head like a rattle: "How many years ago was that? At least twenty years, right? The archives must have moved several times! Looking for the former teachers? They may have retired, transferred, or even passed away. Where can we find them? It's impossible!"

They found the Academic Affairs Office, where a young, bespectacled female teacher greeted them. After hearing their request, she looked embarrassed and threw up her hands. "Huang Qiang? I don't remember him. Student records weren't managed as standardized and electronically as they are now. Back then, they were all paper, many handwritten, and had been piled in the logistics warehouse for decades, untouched. Thick with dust, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. And you're not police officers, and without proper documentation, we can't let you search casually. It's a rule. Sorry." Her words were polite but firm, tinged with businesslike indifference.

For several days, they rushed like headless flies between the school, the district education bureau's archives, and old neighbors who might know the Huang family, only to be met with disappointment, excuses, and wary looks. They even caught the attention of security guards by frequently inquiring about someone near the demolition area who "might have a criminal record," and were nearly questioned as suspicious individuals seeking demolition compensation.

Ouyang Lanlan's feet were blistered, and every step was excruciatingly painful. The dry, cold weather in Longdu made her throat dry and itchy, a constant discomfort. But she gritted her teeth and followed Qin Chuan silently, the stubbornness in her eyes growing deeper. Every disappointment made her more silent, but also more determined.

Just when they were almost desperate and were preparing to think of other ways or even ask Wang Yang for help to use official channels, things took a turn for the better.

Qin Chuan was in a small park near the school where a group of elderly people were playing chess and basking in the sun. He handed a cigarette to an elderly man watching the game and asked casually, "Uncle, I want to ask you about someone. He used to be at Hongguang Primary School. His name is Huang Qiang. I think he lives around here."

The old man squinted his eyes, enjoying his tobacco, silent and completely absorbed in the chess game. Another old man, wearing an old cotton-padded jacket, who was watching the game nearby, suddenly looked up, blinked his cloudy eyes, and revealed a thoughtful expression: "You mean Hongguang Primary School? Hey, I do remember that the Huang family had a child named Huang Qiang! It was a girl, right? She went to school here."

Qin Chuan and Ouyang Lanlan asked in surprise, "Is it a girl?" The old man paused and tapped the cane in his hand, "Yes, Huang Qiang, the Qiang with the grass radical. You can't tell from the name!"

Huang Qiang! Yes! Although they didn't know why the target of their search had become a girl, and they didn't know if this was Huang Qiang's former name, Qin Chuan and Ouyang Lanlan's spirits suddenly perked up, as if they had seen a ray of light in the darkness. They hurried over and asked anxiously, "Uncle, do you still remember him? Do you know what happened to him later? Where did his family move to?"

The old man seemed to be immersed in a brief memory. When asked by them, he lowered his head, waved his hand, and returned his attention to the chessboard: "It's been so many years, who can remember clearly! It seems that we haven't seen each other much since then. Maybe we moved away? Lost! Old Li, this move of yours is terrible!" His attention was attracted by the wonderful chess game again, and he no longer paid attention to them.

Although it was just a few words, it was like a match lit in the darkness! They had been looking in the wrong direction! They should have been looking for "Huang Qiang", not "Huang Qiang" as he might have changed his name later!

They immediately returned to Hongguang Primary School and this time directly asked to find the academic records of "Huang Qiang".

Perhaps it was their persistence and haggard appearance that touched the young academic affairs teacher, or perhaps it was the special name "Huang Qiang" that brought out some vague impressions from the corner of her memory.

She hesitated for a moment, pushed her glasses, and said, "Huang Qiang, I seem to have some impression of this name. I seem to have seen it before when I was sorting out old files for destruction. It's a very unique name. Wait a minute, I'll go to the warehouse and help you look for it. But I can't guarantee that I will find it. There are too many things, and it may have been lost."

After a long and anxious wait, just when they had almost given up hope, the female teacher actually came out with a yellowed student ID card with severely damaged edges and even mold spots!

A hint of surprise and curiosity lingered on his face. "Found it! It really is! Huang Qiang, born in 1985, enrolled in school in 1991, home address... Oh, it's definitely Unit 2, Building 6, near the old pharmaceutical factory. Hey? Wait, why is the gender field filled in with 'male'?"

The academic affairs teacher also noticed something was wrong. She looked up in surprise and looked at Qin Chuan and Ouyang Lanlan, her eyes full of confusion and inquiry.

The student ID card was faded, the writing a little blurry, but still legible. A one-inch black-and-white photo was affixed to it.

The child in the photo is about six or seven years old, with delicate eyebrows, red lips, white teeth, neat bangs, a doll-like haircut, and wearing a small shirt with a lace collar. He shows a shy and well-behaved smile to the camera.

She looked like a beautiful little girl! But in the gender column, there was a clear "Male" written in blue pen!

Qin Chuan and Ouyang Lanlan looked at each other, and couldn't help but feel surprised and suspicious.

"Teacher, can we still find the teacher who taught this class back then?" Qin Chuan asked anxiously.

The academic affairs teacher looked at the strange student ID card and realized that something was amiss. He tried to recall, "We enrolled in 1991. The students from that class are all in their thirties now. My homeroom teacher back then was Teacher Liu? Teacher Liu Yumei! Yes! She should have retired a long time ago. I'm trying to find her contact information."

3. Memory Fragments

Through the school union, they finally contacted teacher Liu Yumei, who had been retired for many years and lived with her children in another district. When she heard the name "Huang Qiang" on the phone, Teacher Liu was silent for a long time before sighing, "I remember that child. What do you want to know?"

They met in a quiet teahouse. Teacher Liu, a gentle, gray-haired woman, had a complex expression when she mentioned Huang Qiang.

"When Huang Qiang first started school, she was as pretty as a porcelain doll, quiet and reserved." Teacher Liu slowly stirred the tea in her cup, lost in memory. "Her parents, especially her father, always kept their heads down during parent-teacher conferences and rarely interacted with other parents. Her mother, on the other hand, loved her dearly, always keeping her neatly dressed and braiding her hair beautifully."

"Everyone at school, including many of our old neighbors, thought she was a girl. But we teachers knew she was a boy, raised as a girl by her parents." Teacher Liu's voice trailed off, a hint of helplessness in her voice. "The information says it's a boy, but at school, since the parents don't say anything, we don't dare to mention it, for fear of bringing bad luck to them."

"I've heard that from a few people. They say that when his mother was pregnant with him, his father asked someone to do an ultrasound, and the doctor said it was a girl. The couple was very happy, thinking they had a son, a son and a daughter now. So they bought lots of girls' clothes, toys, and other things. But it turned out to be a son. His father's joy didn't last long. I don't know who told him that the child was too weak and needed to be given a girl's name and raised as a girl until she was ten years old to survive and have a promising future. And since the child was pretty, they just raised her as a girl... It's ridiculous!" Teacher Liu's tone was full of condemnation. "The school respected their choice. After all, there were a lot of such foolish things back then, so a few of us teachers who knew about it kept it a secret for him. We made him go to the staff restroom and told the kids in the class not to bully him. The kids didn't understand and played with her like she was a girl, jumping rope and throwing sandbags. She joined in."

Ouyang Lanlan couldn't help but ask, "What about him? Does he think he is a boy or a girl?"

Teacher Liu shook her head. "What does such a young child know? His parents, teachers, and classmates all treat him as a girl, so he naturally thinks he is. He's a very well-behaved kid, an average student, and an excellent handicraft stylist. But he's becoming increasingly introverted. I remember there was a girl in our class named Xiaojuan. She was his best friend and they were inseparable."

Everything seemed to fall into place: a boy raised as a girl, ultimately becoming a serial rapist. Qin Chuan felt his upbringing was unusual and warranted further investigation. Through Teacher Liu, Qin Chuan and Ouyang Lanlan tracked down several of his former classmates. Memories were fragmented, requiring a little patience to piece together.

At Dongshu Square, they found a classmate named Li Na, now a mother of two. She had a deep impression of Huang Qiang: "Huang Qiang? I remember her! She was so quiet. When we jumped rope, she was always the one with the most stability! Then, after fourth or fifth grade, she stopped playing with us and always stayed alone. I think she transferred to another school in junior high. I never saw her again."

Another male classmate, Zhang Shuo, who is now a taxi driver, has a vague recollection: "Huang Qiang? I don't have much impression of her! I think there was such a person? Oh, right! I remember a little bit! Probably in the first or second year of junior high school, I once saw a man with short hair at the entrance of the game hall. He was also wearing boys' sportswear and looked an awful lot like Huang Qiang! I thought it was Huang Qiang's brother or brother, so I went up to him and called out 'Huang Qiang'. As a result, he glared at me fiercely. That look was so scary! He lowered his head and ran away. Later I heard that it was Huang Qiang herself! They said that her family didn't want her to be a girl anymore and forced her to change back? We all thought it was so strange and talked about him behind his back, saying he was a pervert."

These fragmented memories gradually outline a suffocating childhood: a child kidnapped by his parents' wrong ideas, growing up with an ambiguous gender identity, and at some point in time, this fragile balance was violently broken.

Finally, the enthusiastic teacher Liu called again and provided a key clue: "I suddenly remembered something, I wonder if it's useful to you! I think it was when he was twelve years old. I can't remember the exact time, but it was definitely before he started junior high school. I remember it very clearly. Because of his physical development and the fact that he couldn't use the girls' restroom anymore in junior high school, he couldn't hide it anymore. So his family decided to make him a boy again. I think they even changed his name, from Qiang to Qiang."

After a pause, Teacher Liu continued, "It seemed like that day was Sunday. School started the next day, Monday, and his father forced him to go to the barber shop to have his long hair cut. He cried heartbreakingly. The next day, I happened to run into his father on the street as he was taking him to school. His eyes were swollen like peaches, and he was wearing ill-fitting men's clothes. He looked completely stunned. From then on, he was completely changed."

"Sunday!" Qin Chuan suddenly grasped this moment! His heart felt like it was hit by a heavy hammer!

The serial rapes all occurred on Sunday nights, and the killer also used a perverted ritual – cutting off the women's long hair after the crimes.

Could the timing and characteristics of the murderer's crimes be related to the immense psychological trauma he suffered during his childhood?! Is all this just coincidence, or is Huang Qiang the murderer behind the December 4th serial murders?

4. Linzhou Shadow

As the portrait of Huang Qiang's childhood becomes clearer, the underlying motives become increasingly chilling. Qin Chuan decides to delve deeper into his experiences after adolescence, particularly the psychological changes following his father's forced "correction," and the character shaped by this unique upbringing, hoping to uncover clues to his crimes. This will require more time and more in-depth interviews.

However, Ouyang Lanlan's company kept calling her to urge her to go back. An important project had reached a critical point, and she could not take too long a leave.

"You go back to Linzhou first." Qin Chuan made a decision, "I will stay here to continue investigating, and you must be careful when you go back." There was unconcealable worry in his eyes.

Ouyang Lanlan nodded. She knew she couldn't lose her job; it was the foundation of her life in Linzhou. Furthermore, she had returned to Longdu solely to test her incredibly sensitive intuition and confirm whether Huang Qiang was the murderer. Now, it seemed like everything couldn't be explained by mere coincidence; the answer must be a sure thing. Further investigations in Longdu didn't seem that important anymore. Her intuition told her that if she wanted to find evidence of Huang Qiang's guilt, she should look for a breakthrough with him in Linzhou.

After secretly thinking it over in her mind, she said a simple goodbye to Qin Chuan and left this northern city full of nightmare memories alone, feeling an invisible pressure.

Back in Linzhou, Ouyang Lanlan plunged back into her busy work schedule, but she couldn't focus as she once did. The discoveries she'd made during her trip to Longdu weighed heavily on her heart. The office was bright and clean, and her colleagues were all smiling and laughing, yet she felt a cold pair of eyes watching from the shadows.

That afternoon, she was busy dealing with a backlog of documents when her cell phone rang. It was an unfamiliar takeout call.

"Hello, your takeaway has arrived. Would you like to leave it at the front desk?"

Ouyang Lanlan was stunned for a moment: "Takeout? I didn't order takeout."

"The order form has your name and phone number written on it. Building A, Room 806, Ms. Ouyang Lanlan. One hot latte and one light cheesecake."

Ouyang Lanlan, full of doubts, walked to the front desk. Sure enough, there was a takeout bag there. The delivery driver had already left. She picked up the bag and looked at the receipt. The address, phone number, and name were indeed hers.

Who ordered it? She felt a little uneasy, especially after the Longdu investigation. The identity of "delivery driver" was like a trigger word that could always make her nerves tense.

She returned to her workstation with her takeaway and hesitantly opened the bag. The coffee cup was still warm, and the cake looked exquisite.

Just then, the WeChat icon on the computer flashed. It was Lin Jingliang.

Lin Jingliang: "Hot latte and light cheesecake will give you a full day of energy! [Smiley face]"

Ouyang Lanlan breathed a sigh of relief. It turned out to be Senior Brother Lin. She replied, "Did you order this?"

Lin Jingliang didn't answer directly, but asked: "I heard that you took leave, what have you been doing these days?"

Ouyang Lanlan didn't want to say more, and perfunctorily said, "I have something to do back home."

Lin Jingliang pressed on: "What's going on? Do you need help?"

Ouyang Lanlan sent a smiley face and didn't say anything else.

Lin Jingliang seemed to notice her avoidance and changed the subject: "Let's go have green tea together tonight to welcome you back."

Ouyang Lanlan was in no mood to eat now, so she politely declined, "I have something to take care of tonight, let's do it another day. Thank you, Senior Brother."

It was time to get off work, and Ouyang Lanlan packed up and went downstairs. She was still feeling a little depressed and uneasy. As she walked out of the office building, the evening sun was a bit glaring. She subconsciously glanced around, her eyes sweeping over the row of electric bikes parked on the side of the road.

Suddenly, her eyes fixed on one of the riders!

The rider had just emerged from the office building, looking down at his phone. He was wearing a blue jockey suit, of medium build, and his profile… looked a bit like the person she had caught a fleeting glimpse of that afternoon! Although she couldn't see his full face, the feeling made her heart tighten!

Is it Huang Qiang? !

Her heart instantly started beating wildly! Without giving it any thought, she watched the rider put away his phone and seemed ready to ride away on his electric scooter. Almost subconsciously, she quickly walked to the side of the road and reached out to stop a taxi that happened to be passing by.

She opened the car door and got in. She pointed at the rider's back and said urgently, "Master, please follow the person riding the electric bike in front!"

The driver, a middle-aged man, was stunned for a moment. He glanced at her through the rearview mirror, an ambiguous expression on his face: "Okay! Follow the car, right? Don't worry, you won't get lost! What, girl, are you catching a mistress? That guy in front... looks like a delivery man?"

Ouyang Lanlan's heart was completely focused on the blurry blue figure in front of her. She didn't hear what the driver said at all. She just said "hmm" vaguely, her eyes fixed on the front.

The driver, however, became excited. He shifted gears expertly to keep up while muttering, "Tsk tsk, what a mess the world is these days. You're such a pretty girl, and you obviously work in a high-end office building, a white-collar worker! What's the point of finding a delivery guy? Buddy, let me tell you something you won't like to hear, this..."

Ouyang Lanlan had no interest in listening to his gossip; her complete attention was focused on the blue figure weaving through the traffic. Her palms were sweating from nervousness, and she leaned forward slightly, afraid of losing him.

Huang Qiang's electric car wasn't going very fast, but it was very maneuverable. It made many turns and finally drove into a residential complex that looked a bit old. Vehicles could enter and exit the complex freely, and the management was not strict.

Ouyang Lanlan quickly paid the fare, got out of the car in a hurry, and trotted in.

The residential complex was densely populated, and the corridors were dim. She saw Huang Qiang park his car in front of one of the buildings, then walk into the apartment building with his head lowered, carrying a takeout bag.

Ouyang Lanlan's heart was beating like a drum. She hid behind the corner of a nearby building, holding her breath and secretly peeking out to observe.

The door to the unit was closed. Faint footsteps could be heard coming up the stairs.

What should she do? Follow him in? Too dangerous! Not follow him? Will she just miss out?

Just as she was struggling fiercely and hesitating, the phone in her bag suddenly buzzed! The sound seemed particularly abrupt in the quiet evening!

She was startled and hurriedly took out her cell phone. When she looked at the screen, it was Lin Jingliang calling!

Almost at the same time as the phone vibrated, a blurry shadow seemed to move behind a window of the building in front, as if someone was standing behind the window, silently peering down...
