Chapter 166 Grandparents Gone

"I don't like drinking it. There's still some in the pot, enough for two aunties. I just made myself a bowl of clear broth noodles." Hua Xiuyun disliked the muttony smell; it almost made her sick when she was making the mutton soup.

"..." Lin Zhaoyue felt that there was nothing happier than this moment. She was drinking mutton soup while it was snowing outside. The house was warm and cozy, and every pore on her body felt comfortable.

"Hey? You're back just in time. You've already swept all the snow from the doorway."

"Are you deaf? I'm talking to you!" In the courtyard, Jiang Guofu talked to Jiang Jingzhou for a long time, but he pretended not to hear him and hurriedly went into the house.

Lifting the heavy curtain, Jiang Jingzhou exuded a chill, which, when warmed by the heat inside the room, caused him to emit "white smoke."

It's easy to imagine how big the temperature difference is between inside and outside.

Lin Zhaoyue smiled and opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Jiang Jingzhou said first, "Grandpa and Grandma are gone."

Suddenly, Lin Zhaoyue's mind went blank. "Who's gone?"

Jiang Jingzhou's maternal grandparents had passed away long ago, so he wasn't referring to his maternal grandparents, but to Lin Zhaoyue's.

Lin Zhaoyue found it outrageous. Both of her parents were in very good health; how could they just suddenly be gone?

Besides, even if the two of them were to die, they couldn't possibly die together; there's no such thing as a coincidence in the world.

"Just tell me what happened already, stop keeping me in suspense. Are you trying to drive me crazy?" Hua Xiuyun said anxiously. Jiang Jingzhou only knew how to give the result, but didn't explain the details. How did he know?

“I heard it from my comrade. His mother-in-law’s house is very close to his maternal grandparents’ house,” Jiang Jingzhou said softly, looking at Lin Zhaoyue nervously. “They didn’t die today, they died a few days ago. It seems they were burned by coal smoke. The neighbors noticed that the two elders hadn’t gone out for a long time, and when they went to check, they found out that something had happened. They quickly notified the elders’ sons, but there were no vital signs. They didn’t even send them to the hospital; they just held the funeral at home.”

"How come no one informed us of something this big?"

Hua Xiuyun was puzzled.

At the very least, we need to inform Zhaoyue; she's still a granddaughter!

It's impossible that the Huang family didn't know about her existence.

“Yes, no one informed us.” Jiang Jingzhou sat down next to Lin Zhaoyue, his eyes sharpening. Something was definitely going on here!

Lin Zhaoyue's mind is now filled with thoughts of her maternal grandparents' passing. The last time she saw them, they were excitedly discussing naming their child, but then they were gone.

Although I don't have a very deep emotional bond with my maternal grandparents, I have still felt their loving kindness since I met them.

Lin Zhaoyue blinked, tears welling up in her eyes. She raised her hand to her chest. "I want to go see them."

"good."

"It's snowing outside."

Jiang Jingzhou readily agreed, but Hua Xiuyun was worried that it wouldn't be safe for her daughter-in-law to go out at this time, so she insisted on waiting until the snow stopped before making a decision.

Now that we know the two elders are in trouble, a day or two won't make a difference.

Hua Xiuyun raised her hand and patted Lin Zhaoyue's shoulder comfortingly, "Zhaoyue, listen to what your mother has to say. I can totally understand how you feel right now. It's definitely not okay for you to go by yourself. Our whole family has to go with you. You are the granddaughter of the two elders, and we are your husband's family. Even if it's just to pay respects, we will still go with you."

Lin Zhaoyue: "..." She just wanted to know why no one had told her about such a big thing?

Were her uncles worried that she shouldn't be too upset while she was pregnant? But none of them informed Jingzhou!

She heard about this from an outsider, and Lin Zhaoyue calmed herself down. "Okay, Mom, I'll listen to you."

"Now that it has happened, don't be too sad. Everyone has to die sooner or later. I think it's not necessarily a bad thing that the two of you have passed away like this. At least you didn't suffer any pain."

Hua Xiuyun tried to comfort her, telling her to think more positively and not to be too attached to life and death.

Lin Zhaoyue nodded slightly. "Mom, I know what you mean. I've seen life and death in the hospital before, so I can understand. What I can't understand is why they didn't notify me! Why didn't they let me see my grandparents off on their final journey? I didn't even get to see them."

As she spoke, Lin Zhaoyue became somewhat agitated, "My maternal grandparents must have wanted to see me too. I didn't even go to see them off after they died, so they must think I'm an unfilial granddaughter who wasted all their love on me!"

"No, I think if they knew, they definitely wouldn't let anyone notify you. After all, you're pregnant, and they all want you to be okay."

Jiang Jingzhou reached out and grasped Lin Zhaoyue's hand, his thin lips pressed tightly together. His mother was right!

On his way here, all he could think about was whether Zhaoyue would be able to accept this.

Seeing her reaction now, Jiang Jingzhou breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, she had a strong mentality.

Lin Zhaoyue suddenly lost her appetite. She didn't know when the snow outside would stop, and she stared longingly outside.

Jiang Jingzhou knew she was in a bad mood, so he didn't go to work at the military base for several days and stayed home with her.

Once the snow outside had mostly melted, Lin Zhaoyue and Jiang Jingzhou decided to go and take a look.

Of course, it's not just them going; Hua Xiuyun and Jiang Guofu will also go, and their two children will be looked after by their nanny.

Hua Xiuyun was worried about not having family members watching over her, so she called Xiaobao over to keep an eye on him since it was Saturday and Sunday.

The four of them drove over, but the old couple's door was locked, and a white cloth strip was hanging outside.

"How do we get in?" Jiang Guofu asked. Should we climb over the wall? That would be too undignified!

"I have the key." Lin Zhaoyue came with the key and easily unlocked the door. The moment she pushed the door open, her mood became heavy.

When she comes, her grandparents always welcome her happily.

This time, there was no sign of life; even the courtyard and houses felt cold.

Lin Zhaoyue was dressed in thick clothes, but she couldn't withstand the constant chill of the air conditioning.

"Hey? What are you doing here! This is my yard, who gave you the key?"

Suddenly, a male voice rang out. Lin Zhaoyue turned around to look at him in surprise. She hadn't met many of her uncles, but she felt that the man in front of her didn't look like her maternal grandparents. She didn't say anything for a moment.

"I'm asking you a question! Stealing things in broad daylight? Aren't you afraid I'll send you all to jail?"

The man became instantly enraged when he saw that no one spoke.

“This is my maternal grandparents’ courtyard. Who are you?” Lin Zhaoyue asked.

"Are you Aunt Huang's granddaughter?" the man recognized Lin Zhaoyue.

"Yes." Lin Zhaoyue nodded. "Why did you just say this courtyard was yours?"

“Your uncle and his family sold the yard to me! Of course it’s mine, and we signed a contract.” The man said, “Why didn’t you come when your parents died? You’re too late now. Their graves aren’t here; they’re over there in the west. Don’t come here again. I’ll change the locks later.”

"This yard is mine!"
