Chapter 12 Keeping a Small Family Outside

angry?

Before Sun Lifang could react, her daughter opened the velvet box.

Inside was a gold necklace, dazzling and eye-catching, but not very attractive in design. It looked very heavy, which was exactly Zhou Yunshi's usual style of flattery.

Only after Zhou Xinya's rambling prompts did Sun Lifang recall the origin of their cold war.

Despite being married for so many years and having the closest relationship, she still couldn't get into Zhou Yunshi's heart.

His work style continued at home: business as usual. To put it another way, her husband's attitude was something like, "If you don't work, I'll support you without any problem. If you do work, you can keep your money as pocket money, and I'll cover the household expenses."

It seems fine, but what husband doesn't let his wife manage the money?

Sun Lifang was embarrassed to ask for it. This was how they interacted before marriage, and at the time she thought it was very democratic. It's impossible for her not to have any lingering resentment after marriage.

That would have been fine, but she discovered something else.

Zhou Yunshi prefers cash and usually takes it home first, then deposits it later. However, he hasn't deposited any money in the past two months. His excuse to Sun Lifang is that the factory is expanding its production line and the business is not performing well.

Zhou Yunshi's words were always very convincing. Coincidentally, on that day she ran into her driver, Li Zhi, who was shopping with his wife. Upon seeing her, the wife of a leader, Li Zhi insisted on giving her local specialties.

Sun Lifang repeatedly declined, saying, "The factory is in such a difficult situation, you should take care of yourselves."

Xiao Li was stunned for a moment, then quickly changed the subject, pulling his wife away to say goodbye. But in that instant, Sun Lifang sensed something was wrong, and that same day she went home and made several phone calls to subtly inquire with other people.

That person said the exact opposite of Zhou Yunshi: the factory was booming with orders in the first half of the year, and wages and bonuses were higher than in previous years.

"Witness testimony" alone was not enough; Sun Lifang found other evidence.

Zhou Yunshi used to enjoy drinking tea with his buddies in his spare time, but now he doesn't do that anymore. He just sneaks out whenever he has a spare moment, and sometimes he even secretly puts away his phone when he gets a text message. Even more coincidentally, when Sun Lifang went to buy daily necessities in the neighborhood, the familiar grocery store owner kindly reminded her, asking with suspicion, "Didn't I already buy some from you? Didn't he tell you?"

Sun Lifang subtly extracted the information her husband had bought: cooking oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, meat, eggs, milk, various milk powder and nutritional supplements... plus a pair of slippers.

Isn't this like having a little family on the side?!

With the intention of catching her husband cheating, Sun Lifang knew it was unrealistic for a pregnant woman to follow her husband, who had served in the military. She figured that driver Li Zhi couldn't possibly be unaware of her husband's affair, so she devised a plan and obtained his address.

After opening the door, Sun Lifang's face turned green, and she choked on her words.

It was none other than Zhou Yunshi's father.

Zhou Dahai was a dissolute man with countless female companions. It is said that Zhou Yunshi's grandfather's generation left behind a whole street of shops, which he squandered. When Zhou Yunshi was fifteen years old, he even brought home an illegitimate child.

The mother-in-law cried and wailed, but she couldn't win against the young and beautiful mistress, so she divorced him, took some money, and moved to another city.

Two years ago, the Zhou family's land was slated for demolition, and they received a house and land compensation of around 800,000 yuan. Zhou Dahai actually wanted to give it all to his youngest son, Zhou Yangyang. They couldn't control the money of divorced couples, but where did their land compensation go? Without a word, Zhou Dahai colluded with acquaintances to embezzle the land compensation that belonged to his mother-in-law.

The mother-in-law went to make a scene, but Zhou Dahai refused, saying that Zhou Yangyang was poor, had a low level of education, and wasn't married yet. He claimed that if he didn't have enough money to get married, he'd be a bachelor for life. He added that Zhou Yunshi, a college graduate, had a wife, children, and a job, and didn't need the demolition compensation; their share originally belonged to the Zhou family, and they should have the guts to make a scene.

Sun Lifang wasn't good at arguing, but her mother-in-law's repeated attempts to make trouble hadn't yielded any money. The mistress wasn't someone to be trifled with either, and the two families ended up fighting over the issue. Zhou Dahai, the person involved, even smugly told his mother-in-law, "Just forget about me. The person I love now isn't you."

Not content with that, he pushed them away, saying, "I'm old and don't need you to support me. I don't owe you anything after all these years, do I? Zhou Yangyang is my son. He'll take care of me in the countryside from now on. If I don't support him, who will I support?!"

Finally, the mistress jumped out to ridicule them: "With such petty ambitions as your brother and sister-in-law, I thought they could amount to much? Giving them a few melons or dates is disgusting enough, but look at how quickly they run away with this penny!"

The mother-in-law was so angry she nearly fell over. She rushed over and scratched the mistress's face until it was covered in graffiti, then said fiercely, "Fine, so that's what you said! Remember this! From now on, we'll go our separate ways, don't forget!"

Three years have passed since then, and Sun Lifang had gradually forgotten about it. Now, why has Zhou Dahai suddenly reappeared?

What does he want to do?

"How do you want to handle this?" A soft voice suddenly fell into my ear.

Sun Lifang looked up in a daze, and when she met her husband's face up close, her heart skipped a beat.

There's a reason why Zhou Dahai, the father-in-law, had so many female confidantes. He was handsome, the kind of strikingly handsome man that people of this era generally liked. His son, Zhou Yunshi, was even more refined than his father, with a straight nose and a natural air of charm in his eyes.

Sun Lifang swallowed shamefully, then subtly looked away.

The daughter, standing nearby, tried to smooth things over anxiously: "Dad, help Mom. She's pregnant and can't stand for long."

Children are the easiest to sense when adults are angry, so she needs to provide her child with a stable family atmosphere.

The man smiled slightly and reached out his hand as instructed.

Sun Lifang shuddered, gave a dry laugh, and pondered the current situation in her mind.

The husband, Zhou Yunshi, has a good relationship with his father. Although Zhou Dahai is a womanizer, he is very patient with his son. When it comes to spending time with the child, the mother-in-law is less than a third as good as Zhou Dahai.

Therefore, Zhou Yunshi was determined to take control of Zhou Dahai, his father.
