Chapter 256 The Stolen Property

Zhou Xinya didn't say a word the whole way to the hospital.

She found the adults to be quite strange; their words and actions didn't match.

Last time, when that Archie called, he said it was "tea money" and that he didn't plan to ask for it back no matter whether the deal was done or not.

Now, just a few days later, they're coming to our door demanding money.

How hypocritical you are!

Zhou Xinya would get very angry if someone gave her a gift and then tried to take it back.

So she observed her father's expression throughout the journey.

Then she was disappointed; her father didn't show any sign of it at all. He even told her to wash her hands before entering the ward when they got to the door.

Just like usual!

Zhou Xinya washed her hands, and when she came back, she saw her mother holding flowers and smiling gently, while her father's eyes also showed a hint of a smile.

What a harmonious and beautiful scene!

No way! Zhou Xinya thought to herself, sending flowers was clearly my idea, how did my dad beat me to it!

How infuriating! He used washing his hands to get me out of the way so he could take credit for himself!

Zhou Xinya stood at the door for a while, wondering when the couple would notice her.

But she was disappointed; her father merely glanced at her indifferently before continuing to talk to her mother.

Oh dear, I was worried you were unhappy!

(Unwittingly) Zhou Xinya ran to another room in the suite to see the baby, who was already able to open his eyes—

Zhou Xinya noticed that their eyes were so dark and pure!

There wasn't a single impurity; it was so clean!

Of course, aside from being a bit dull—

They can only open their eyes, but their eyeballs don't move; they just stare blankly in one direction.

Sister Miao explained to her, "A baby's vision doesn't fully develop until after one year old. Opening her eyes now is just an instinctive reaction."

Today, Zhou Xinya brought a teddy bear over and lay down next to her crib to tell stories to her younger siblings.

Her stories were all made up, she just told them whatever came to mind. After telling them once, Sister Miao said, "Baby needs to sleep, shall we sing a song?"

It was a polite way of refusing, but Zhou Xinya couldn't tell.

Upon hearing that she would be singing, she immediately raised her little hand, "I can sing in English, French, and Italian. Which one do they want to hear?"

Sister Miao: "......"

Hmm, can't you just sing a regular Chinese song?

Zhou Xinya couldn't do that; she wanted to sing her best and most challenging songs for her younger siblings.

And so, a short Italian poem came out of his mouth, complete with an aria.

"It's alright," Sister Miao comforted herself, "as long as it's not a soprano, it's fine."

After the song ended, Sister Miao clapped her hands and said, "Great!"

This praise was a big deal. Zhou Xinya loves praise, and the more others praise her, the more she wants to show off. If Sun Lifang were here, she would stop her in time, but Sister Miao clearly lacks "social experience" and was tricked by Zhou Xinya.

After singing the Italian songs, she sang an English lullaby, and finally sang almost all the songs she knew before ending the performance.

No one knows the torment Sister Miao is going through—

How could this be? This was the first time she had ever encountered such an enthusiastic child.

The little girl, having seen something, ran over and grabbed Sister Miao's hand. "Look! I've put them to sleep!"

When Sister Miao peeked out, she saw the two little ones kicking their legs and sleeping soundly with their eyes closed.

Whether she was hypnotized by the song or simply sleepy, Sister Miao could only give a thumbs up again, reluctantly agreeing, "Yes, you're really great."

She can't act out even the most intense emotions anymore. Isn't that making things difficult for her?

As aloof as Sister Miao was, she never expected that the first turning point in her career would be—

How to respond to a young girl's enthusiasm in an awkward yet polite way.

While every child has their own personality, this family is being far too enthusiastic.

They were so enthusiastic that they asked Sister Miao, "Where are your parents? Are you going home for the Chinese New Year?"

Sister Miao remained silent in response.

She's over fifty years old, and her parents passed away a few days ago.

Come to think of it, she's a homeless person now.

She started working as a maid at the age of twelve, toiled for most of her life, and still doesn't have a home of her own in her old age.

Perhaps it had happened before. For some reason, a hint of tears welled up in Sister Miao's weathered eyes, and she turned away to process it herself.

Seeing this, Zhou Xinya realized she had said the wrong thing, and froze, fidgeting with her hands.

How can I make Sister Miao happy?

The little girl suddenly remembered something, ran over and threw herself into Sister Miao's arms, whispering, "Grandma Miao, I'll invite Peilin to my house to play in a couple of days."

Peilin was raised by Sister Miao, so of course she misses her.

The villa has been ventilated for the past two days. We had someone clean it beforehand, and now it's in the ventilation phase, which means we can move in in a couple of days.

Although Zhou Xinya didn't want to move there yet, she was nostalgic.

But to make Sister Miao happy, Zhou Xinya decided to talk more about Peilin—

“Perrin eats a lot of food at school. She told me that you treat her the best.”

"Perrin also said she wanted to eat your paella. How about we invite Perrin over for dinner after we move to the villa?"

Upon hearing this, Sister Miao nodded with tears in her eyes.

She never married and had long cherished Perrin as her own child.

If it weren't for... she wouldn't have left there.

However, working for someone else is not a long-term solution. Sister Miao has decided to discuss it with her wife later, saying, "I'll quit after three years."

She's 57 this year, and she's saved up quite a bit of money in the first half of her life.

It's time to buy a house and live a life of my own.

We spend our whole lives busy for others, but forget to take care of our own lives.
