The capital city of Beirong was destined to be anything but peaceful that night. The atmosphere was solemn and respectful, and even the wind that blew through it sent chills down one's spine.
Vice Minister Qin's heart trembled. He dared not look at Yuwen Yao's face. He knelt down with a thud, tears streaming down his face. "I beg Your Majesty to investigate! I have always been law-abiding and served the country without ever overstepping my bounds. Moreover, Qin Xun is my son. How could I possibly harm him?"
Yuwen Yao closed his eyes and ordered the Prefect of the Capital who was walking behind him, "Take Lord Qin away and imprison him in the Prefect's jail."
"yes."
Just as the Prefect of the Capital stepped forward, a clear, ethereal laugh suddenly rang out beside the city gate, where there were clearly nearly a thousand people, yet the place was unusually quiet.
"Is Your Majesty burying your head in the sand?"
The newcomer was a woman, dressed in pink, standing atop the city gate, happily eating a candied hawthorn.
"Who dares to openly defy the Emperor? Aren't you afraid of being executed along with your entire family?"
Someone stepped forward and shouted angrily.
The woman suddenly burst into a silvery laugh, "Haha, exterminate nine generations of my family? I only spoke the truth and I'm going to be exterminated along with my entire family? Isn't that going too far?"
"Too much?"
The Prefect of the Capital looked at the woman, his face darkening. He was clearly angered. He was a sensible man, and it was precisely because he was sensible that he could see things so clearly.
Qin Xun was definitely not killed by Lord Qin. The method and the meticulous traces of the handling show that it was not Lord Qin's doing. The reason why the Emperor did this was simply to avoid causing panic and unrest among the people.
Above the city gate, the young master of the Qin family was pierced by a thousand arrows. Even without mentioning the incident, just looking at it was shocking, especially now that the two countries were at war.
This woman who suddenly appeared was frivolous and arrogant, making people inexplicably angry.
"Hmph, this is going too far. What? Didn't you say that the new emperor of Beirong is enlightened? Why is this not what I see here? The person is good-looking, but this is just burying your head in the sand. Could it be that he has already made some secret deal with Nanqi and wants to hand over Beirong to others, so this is what happened?"
The girl shook her head as she spoke, took a bite of the candied hawthorn, and made as if to leave.
"Don't let her get away. Grab her. She might be involved in this, and it's not impossible for her to return to the crime scene later."
The Prefect of the Capital shouted, and he leaped over the city gate, ready to seize the beautiful woman.
But the woman was agile; with a single turn, she instantly darted far away, as elusive as the wind.
"You're really useless, you can't even catch me..."
Just as the woman was about to smugly provoke him, she suddenly stopped, turned around, and saw Yuwen Yao, dressed in a black robe, standing not far from her, exuding a chilling and sinister aura.
"A gentleman uses words, not fists." The woman chuckled and hurriedly begged for mercy, "I am the disciple of an old man in his twilight years. My senior sister is dead, my senior brother is dead, and I am my master's new disciple. He said he came to see how Bei Rong is doing now and whether he needs my help."
"No need, let's go back."
Yuwen Yao decisively refused, but did not harbor any murderous intent.
Before the woman could say anything more, another person stood beside her, looking at her with a half-smile. "Junior Sister?"
A flicker of panic crossed the woman's eyes, and she immediately nodded, "Yes."
"Junior sister? I had no idea my master had taken in a junior sister like you." As he spoke, Yu Qingyi raised his hand, and with a gust of wind, a mask as thin as a cicada's wing appeared in his hand. The woman in front of him, who had been arrogant and smug just moments before, changed her expression.
That face was none other than that of the Fifth Princess, Yuwen Qingyue.
From afar, hidden in the shadows, Nan Lingqin looked at the face above the city gate, and her eyelashes trembled.
Yuwen Qingyue, shouldn't she have been torn to shreds by the snow wolves at the foot of that snow cliff and ceased to exist long ago? Why is she here now, perfectly fine?
Who saved her?
On that day, at the bottom of that snowy cliff, the only ones who had the time to save her were Xu Yiran, Xu Shixun, and Yuwen Yao, who was disguised as Old Master Dong.
Xu Yiran and Xu Shixun are both impossible, so what about Yuwen Yao...?
Nan Lingqin clenched her fists, her eyes filled with coldness.
Sure enough, he still cared about his sister.
"Whoosh—"
At that moment, atop the city gate, Yu Qingyi held his sword to Yuwen Qingyue's neck. "Did you kill her?"
"Brother, you've only just become emperor, and you already want to kill your sister?"
Yuwen Qingyue was no pushover; she was threatening Yuwen Yao, intending to embarrass him in front of so many people.
However, Yuwen Yao remained unmoved, only sneering, "Openly defying me and spouting wild words in an attempt to sow discord among the people, I would like to ask you, what do you intend to do?"
Yuwen Yao did not wait for Yuwen Qingyue's reply, and then nodded slightly to Yu Qingyi.
Yu Qingyi lifted Yuwen Qingyue and carried her away.
When Yu Qingyi did those impolite things, it didn't seem out of place at all.
"Alright, Lord Qin, what are you still standing here for? Whether it's none of your business or not, Lord Huo will find out for himself."
Lord Qin could only leave with a long face as the Prefect of the Capital invited him away.
It seems that matters of great seriousness and far-reaching significance were resolved with just a few words from the Emperor.
Yuwen Yao gave the order to have Qin Xun's body taken down and to give him a proper burial.
The crowd dispersed from the city gates, leaving them deserted and quiet. However, a faint low pressure lingered above the gates, seemingly refusing to dissipate.
"Why did you arrest Qingyue? No matter what, she is your sister who shares the same bloodline."
Yuwen Shi blocked Yuwen Yao's path.
Yuwen Yao looked at Yuwen Shi, who was standing a few meters away, and smiled sarcastically on his domineering face. "Yuwen Shi, when has our Yuwen royal family ever had any kinship?"
