Chapter Sixteen: You Do the First Year of Junior High, I'll Do the Second Year

Having shared a bed with the general for so many years, she knew his suspicious nature to some extent. Coupled with the many inexplicable events of the past few days, even if poison was found in Xie Lingqin's room, it might not actually kill her. Just in case, she orchestrated this whole affair. Her previous claim about the servant's affair with Tinglan was merely a prelude. If it worked, all the better; if not, there was still this place waiting for her. Then she could properly appease the general's heart. But…

After much thought and effort, this is the outcome.

Although the general told others that Granny Yang committed suicide, there was clearly some disgust in his eyes when he looked at her. Because of this incident, the general felt more affection for Xie Lingqin.

“Madam, my mother…” Miaoqiao started crying again at this moment.

Second Aunt looked at Miaoqiao, feeling truly annoyed. She had only pleaded for the girl earlier to make the general think she was kind and benevolent. However, it seemed that she might be of great use in the future. Therefore, she spoke gently, "Miaoqiao, let your mother rest well."

“I never imagined that Granny Yang would be like this…” Xie Lingqin also came over and sighed.

The second aunt's gaze also fell on Xie Lingqin. She absolutely did not believe that this was something Xie Lingqin could do.

She admitted that Xie Lingqin had changed somewhat since her supposed two-day nap, but she didn't believe that Xie Lingqin had orchestrated today's events, or that she had planned them after Xie Lingqin had seen through her scheme.

She didn't have the guts or the ability.

Xie Lingqin met her second aunt's long, lingering gaze and realized she was completely bewildered and knew nothing.

"Anyway, the eldest young lady is doing well now." After a long while, the second concubine suppressed her doubts and anger and said calmly.

Xie Lingqin glanced at Yang Mama's corpse on the ground, then at her daughter, Miaoqiao, before stepping forward. She took off a jade hairpin from her hair and placed it down. "I don't usually bring much, take this." With that, she sighed and turned to leave.

Miao Qiao looked at the hairpin placed on Granny Yang, her eyes filled with resentment.

...

On the long, secluded cobblestone path, Zihe hesitated for a few moments before finally speaking, "Miss, I still don't quite understand. Since you had foreseen what would happen today, wouldn't it have been better for you to have me put the poison in Second Madam's room?"

Xie Lingqin remained calm, a cold glint appearing in her bright, lake-like eyes. "You don't understand my father. If that were true, then he would genuinely suspect that it was me who did it."

Zihe was confused and said, "This servant doesn't understand."

“In this bustling world, there are all sorts of people, and most of them will take a certain point as their guiding principle when dealing with things,” Xie Lingqin said, glancing back at her.

The young girl's figure was as graceful as a bamboo shoot, her clothes fluttering slightly, and her smile, though as bright as a star, held a hint of coldness. "That is, in any given matter, whoever benefits the most is likely the one who instigates it."

Upon hearing this, Zihe was slightly shocked. Although she understood these words to some extent and would act accordingly, hearing them spoken in this way gave her a sense of sudden enlightenment.

"Then, what I did today was not in vain; it has put Second Aunt at ease."

"All for nothing?" Xie Lingqin sneered. "The dike has already been breached by a single point; it's only a matter of time before it collapses for miles around."

If she really wanted to kill someone, it would be easy for her.

But what if she's killed? She still has to live here. General Xu isn't stupid, so everything has to be done discreetly.

How could she possibly let these people go?

The best revenge is to suffer a fate worse than death.

"However, I think you should be careful, Miss. Second Aunt was bewitched today and will surely have other plans. Also, that Miaoqiao must think that you poisoned her mother. Look at your eyes, Miss, there is no kindness in them."

Xie Lingqin smiled coolly, "That's right, there's no goodwill involved."

She waited.
