Chapter 69: Unexplained Drowning
A dense crowd of onlookers gathered by the moat.
It is said that someone was drowning. When he was found, only his head was left on the surface of the river. Several young men who were good at swimming went into the river to fish it out, but failed to do so.
Later, the government sent a ship and increased the salvage manpower, but there was still no news.
At first, Chen Zhou didn't know that the person who fell into the water was Doctor Chen. He heard from the yamen runner who was directing the salvage operation on the bridge that the person who fell into the water was an old man holding a medical book in his hand.
The medical book floated on the water, and they fished it out and placed it on a stone pier beside the bridge.
Chen Zhou carefully read the medical book. It was the same book that Doctor Chen had been reading repeatedly in the past few days. There were still oil stains on the corners of the book that he had accidentally left there when he delivered food yesterday.
Only then did he hurried back to inform Wen Wan.
"It's just the beginning of spring, and the water in the river is freezing cold. I can't imagine the consequences if we don't rescue him after so long."
Wen Wan was so anxious that her face turned pale. She forced herself to calm down and quickly asked Chen Zhou to go next door to call Shouhou.
Agui came over quickly, and when he heard about this, he immediately released a carrier pigeon to inform Shen Yu.
Wen Wan wanted to go to the moat with them, but Agui didn't dare to agree.
"Miss Xiaowan, the moat is crowded right now. Your eyesight is strained now, and if you bump into them again, it will be another nuisance. You should stay home. As soon as we have news, we'll send someone back to you, okay?"
Wen Wan also knew that she couldn't help, but waiting at home would make her even more anxious.
As they were talking, Shen Yu stopped his horse in front of the courtyard gate.
When Agui saw Shen Yu, he was stunned for a moment, then asked in surprise: "How did you come so quickly? The carrier pigeon was just released a while ago."
Upon hearing this, Shen Yu casually explained, "I happened to be passing by West Street and saw the pigeon, so I came over to see it first."
Fortunately, he came.
Wen Wan heard the voice and stretched out her hand towards him, her fingertips trembling.
"Something's happened to Doctor Chen, go over and take a look."
When Shen Yu heard this, his face darkened and he immediately responded.
He thought for a moment and then said, "I'll take Agui over there, and you and Shen Zhou go check Doctor Chen's room."
Wen Wan nodded in agreement.
Shen Yu called Agui and set off, "Talk as we go, no matter how big or small."
Agui briefly told the story of Doctor Chen falling into the water. After that, he gave Shen Yu a thumbs up.
"General, you are indeed resourceful. You used the excuse of inspecting the room to make Miss Xiaowan stay willingly."
He sighed and said, "You don't know, Miss Xiaowan insisted on following me to the moat. I was worried about her safety and tried my best to get her to stay in the yard, but she refused."
Shen Yu paused, turned his head and looked at him, "Do you think I found an excuse?"
Agui: "Isn't it possible?"
Chen Yu sneered, "Of course not. Doctor Chen's identity is sensitive. If he really fell into the water accidentally, it would be fine. But if not, then the room he stayed in for a few days would likely leave some clues."
I see.
Agui suddenly understood and began to admire the general even more.
*
Doctor Chen had traveled in a hurry when he came, and he didn't bring much luggage with him, so there weren't many of his things in the room except two packages and a medicine box.
Chen Zhou carefully checked each item and described them to Wen Wan as he checked.
"Two packages, one containing a change of clothes, the other containing medical books."
Chen Zhou casually flipped through the medical books and found a few prescriptions from one of them.
"Huh?" Chen Zhou looked at the writing brush and ink, "These prescriptions look like they were newly written."
Wen Wan sat on the chair next to him. Upon hearing this, she asked softly, "What's the recipe?"
"Uh..." Chen Zhou touched the back of his head a little embarrassedly, with a guilty look on his face. "These prescriptions all have names on them. Pregnancy-Assisting and Childbearing Recipe, Xiantian Guiyi Decoction, Lisheng Decoction, Pregnancy-Assisting Decoction, Wenyang Seed Decoction, and Danggui Baizhu Decoction..."
The names of these recipes are really...
It's obvious that he wants to take care of her so that she can give birth to a child for Shen Yu.
Doctor Chen is really devoted to Shen Yu. He has been studying these prescriptions in his room these days?
Wen Wan didn't know what to say for a moment.
However, when she thought about the fact that Dr. Chen's life or death was uncertain, she felt even more upset.
Apart from these prescriptions, there was nothing else special in the room.
Wen Wan asked Chen Zhou to move a bench in the yard so that when Chen Yu and the others came back, they would be the first to know the news.
Two hours later, they finally came back.
But as they came back, the sound of gongs and drums was heard in the alley.
There must be a sound at weddings and funerals. Wen Wan immediately understood what this sound meant. Doctor Chen might have met with an accident.
Sure enough, a group of people carried the coffin into the yard.
Shen Yu arranged for people to set up the mourning hall and asked Shen Zhou to cook dinner for everyone.
He walked slowly to Wen Wan, rubbed his hands, and then held her hands.
Wen Wan's body stiffened, "Doctor Chen..."
He couldn't bear to let her say the cruelest thing. "Yes. The drowning victim's body was fished out. It was Doctor Chen."
When Wen Wan heard this, her nose felt sore and tears started to fall.
The old man who was still alive in the morning and was joking with her yesterday was gone just like that.
Life is unpredictable, which always makes people sigh and feel sad.
Wen Wan's voice was slightly choked. "Is it just drowning?"
Shen Yu hesitated for a moment, "On the surface, it seems like he just drowned. He has no other external injuries."
The reason why I can't say for sure is that there are no external injuries, but it doesn't mean that we can't knock the person unconscious before pushing him into the water.
Shen Yu asked again: "Did you find anything in Doctor Chen's room?"
Wen Wan shook her head. "No. There's only a recipe to help with pregnancy."
Shen Yu frowned tightly and was silent for a long time before he said, "Perhaps it was just an accident? But no matter what, I will find out the truth."
Wen Wan remained silent, but she was extremely perceptive. Listening to Shen Yu's tone, it seemed that there might be some hidden secrets here?
Shen Yu raised his hand to wipe her tears.
"The dead cannot be resurrected. Since it has happened, let's let him go in peace. I will let Agui take care of Doctor Chen's funeral."
Wen Wan asked doubtfully, "Aren't you going to notify his family?"
Shen Yu's eyes darkened, and he whispered, "Doctor Chen is alone, childless, and has no one to see him off to the end."
Chen Yuanshi was a doctor who took care of the emperor and empress. His identity was sensitive. When he was in the imperial capital, he had few friends and kept a distance from everyone.
Even the Shen family was only close to him because he had known them for a while before he entered the Imperial Hospital.
After hearing this, Wen Wan felt a little uncomfortable and didn't say anything for a long time.
After a long time, she raised her eyes and said, "By the way, where is Doctor Chen's junior apprentice brother? Have you found him? When he went out this morning, it seemed that he was also looking for his junior apprentice brother."
