Xu Nuo was awakened by the shrill ringing of the alarm clock beside the bed. The window without curtains let in the sun outside, which had not yet risen above the sky. Xu Nuo rubbed his eyes, not wanting to be attached to the warm bed, and turned around to get up.
Cold water flowed intermittently from the old and mottled faucet. Xu Nuo didn't care that his hands were red from the cold. He washed his face, brushed his teeth, and took the school uniform that was hung next to him and put it on.
The school uniform was clean, with a faint smell of the cheapest kind of laundry detergent. It felt a little empty on Xu Nuo's frail frame. Xu Nuo shouldered his schoolbag and went out, pushing his thick bangs down again, as if this would give him a sense of security.
The high school was far away from the suburban tube-shaped building where he lived, so he had to get up an hour earlier than other students. After all, he couldn't even afford the two yuan bus fare, so he relied entirely on the old bicycle downstairs.
Of course there was no breakfast. Usually, the owner of the food stall would bring him some leftovers so that he could have a bite in the morning. Last night, the food stall was doing good business and there was almost nothing left. Naturally, he felt embarrassed to ask the owner for some food.
The malnourished boy adjusted the black frames of his glasses and pedaled hard to school. His vision was slightly blurry, but as expected, he was the first one to arrive. This was exactly what Xu Nuo wanted. He quickly returned to his spot in the corner to review his books. It was perfect for him, as he could spend more time reading without attracting attention.
But today, I couldn't fulfill my promise. Before seven o'clock, a loud noise of fighting could be heard in the corridor.
"Boss, you're finally here. We brothers are finally—how do we say it? We're all gathered together!"
"Okay, Curly, you even used an idiom."
Then came an impatient voice, "If you make any more noise, get out. I didn't sleep well and it's annoying already."
The voice seemed quite intimidating, and the corridor became much quieter. Xu Nuo instinctively sensed danger and moved closer to the corner.
However, today it seemed as if everything was going against his will. Instead of going away, the group of teenagers walked into the classroom where he was.
Xu Nuo recognized the boy in the lead; he was from the same class, Zhang Yang. He was thin, fair, and had curly hair, making him very likable. His nickname was "Curly." A large group of people followed Curly, but Xu Nuo only recognized one of them. He was a tall, expressionless boy wearing black, flat-framed glasses. He was also from the same class, named Qi Yu, and Curly was always by his side.
The young man in the center, surrounded by the crowd, was undoubtedly the most eye-catching. He had short, medium-length hair, a gap at his left eyebrow, a prominent nose, and thin, pale lips. Most importantly, a small red mole sat perfectly above his Adam's apple, a mole that etched itself firmly into Xu Nuo's eyes. The boy frowned, his expression gloomy, and he looked sleepy and rather grumpy. This was the protagonist of this world, Luo Jiming.
Xu Nuo wanted to look at the lover of this world a little longer, but because of his own personality, he quickly lowered his head and only glanced at him occasionally, which he thought was hidden.
There was no one else in the classroom except him, and his little action was quickly discovered.
"Boss, the little nerd in the back row has been looking at you," Curly said in a low voice with a smirk on his face.
Luo Jiming was too lazy to pay attention to him. He sat in Qi Yu's seat, which was closest to him, and prepared to lie down on the table to catch up on his sleep.
A skinny boy with dyed yellow hair at the back of the team also heard what Curly said. He glanced at Luo Jiming who didn't say anything, and walked to Xu Nuo's table thinking he was smart.
Xu Nuo lowered his head, his body stiffened with fear for a moment. He was too familiar with this kind of person who came with a menacing look and a wicked smile. Xu Nuo didn't even dare to think about what to do next.
"Hey! Nerd!" The yellow-haired man kicked Xu Nuo's desk twice hard. The small wooden table shook under the weight. Xu Nuo was so scared that he lowered his head and shrank into the corner.
"Tell me, what did you see our boss doing?" A few more kicks. A teenager of this age still had that chuunibyou vibe about him, and he naturally had a secret admiration for violence. He always wanted to be in the spotlight, but it was clear that Huangmao was using the wrong approach.
"Yes... I'm sorry, I didn't mean it..." Xu Nuo's voice couldn't stop trembling, and his eyes were sore and about to burst into tears.
"Who is this?" Curly-haired boy looked at the yellow-haired boy with disgust.
Qi Yu shook his head and said he didn't know him.
Luo Jiming, who was lying on the table, was annoyed by Huang Mao's disturbing voice. He walked over with his long legs and kicked Huang Mao's butt. Huang Mao, who had just been showing off his power, got up from the ground in a daze. Seeing that it was Luo Jiming, he put on an embarrassed and ingratiating expression.
"Boss...did I disturb your sleep?"
Luo Jiming tutted his words and became even more annoyed. "Who the hell are you? Get lost."
The lazy-looking boy inadvertently revealed his fangs, his aura changing. With a forced smile, he scurried off. Luo Jiming himself did fight and smoke, pulling out all the stunts of a bad boy, but he also hated those who picked up trouble and bullied others for no reason, especially when they used his name.
Annoying. Luo Jiming looked at the boy who was almost sticking to the wall and raised his head slightly, then slowly straightened his body. "Thank... Thank you."
Luo Jiming had no interest in being a hero, so he turned and left when he saw that he was alright. "What are you all doing here? Go away."
The young man waved his hand, and the group of five or six people dispersed, leaving only Juanmao and Qi Yu.
Curly still had that smug look on his face as he approached Xu Nuo and said, "Little classmate, your name is Xu Nuo, right? Are you scared?"
Xu Nuo was surprised that he remembered his name. Even though he'd been in high school for almost two months, it was hard for someone as insignificant as him to be remembered. But the impact of the yellow-haired boy had just given him was too great, and Xu Nuo subconsciously felt a fear of the approaching curly-haired boy. His small body, having just sat up straight, almost clung to the wall again.
