Just use
Bai Miaoke left Chun Xing.
After thinking it over, she wandered back to her and Lu Yu's guest room.
The door was closed and it was quiet inside. It was already past noon. Bai Miaoke was not sure whether Lu Yu was in the room, so she raised her hand and gently knocked on the door.
"Come in." The man's deep voice came quickly.
Bai Miaoke pushed the door open and saw Lu Yu sitting on the chaise longue by the window reading a piece of paper, while Fugui was wiping the tables and chairs.
When Lu Yu saw her come in, he looked up in surprise.
"Why did you come back so soon?" Lu Yu asked.
"Chun Xing seems to be seasick. I just sent her back to the room. Did you bring a doctor?" Bai Miaoke asked straight to the point.
"Fugui, go and take a look." Lu Yu ordered.
Fugui replied yes and went out.
"Isn't Fugui your permanent attendant? Does he also know medical skills?" Bai Miaoke asked curiously.
"He knows a lot more. You will know later." Lu Yu's gaze moved back to the letter in his hand and he replied without raising his head.
"Oh, then I'll wait for his news here." Bai Miaoke said, then walked to the table, sat down and poured herself a cup of tea.
Seeing that Lu Yu was still staring at the letter seriously, she felt curious and wanted to ask him what he was looking at, but she was afraid it might be some court secret.
Then she had an idea, picked up an empty teacup, poured a glass of water into it, and walked steadily towards Lu Yu.
"Lord Lu, please have some tea." She spoke only after she came closer.
While handing over the tea, she glanced at the letter in Lu Yu's hand in a very covert manner.
Lu Yu freed one hand to take the tea, not caring about her blatant peeking, and just asked in a light tone: "What did you call me?"
"Ah?" Bai Miaoke's attention was on the letter in his hand, and she didn't understand what he was saying for a moment.
"My lady, what should you call me?" Lu Yu patiently reminded her again.
"Oh, I said, husband, please have some tea." Bai Miaoke finally realized that she had called the wrong name and changed her words readily.
This time Lu Yu was finally satisfied and took the tea and took a sip.
Bai Miaoke still stood aside trying to peek.
Lu Yu was amused by her appearance and simply handed the letter to her: "If you want to see it, I'll show it to you."
Bai Miaoke, who was caught, didn't care. She took the paper without hesitation and read it through quickly.
"Is this true?" Bai Miaoke asked in surprise and doubt.
"This was investigated by your brother himself. Don't you believe him?" Lu Yu asked calmly.
"My brother checked? Didn't he just take office in the Ministry of Industry not long ago? Why would he check these things?" Bai Miaoke felt even more confused.
Lu Yu did not explain any more, but just looked at her quietly, his eyes gentle, as if he could tolerate everything.
Bai Miaoke read the letter carefully again word by word, and finally remembered what her brother had said when he had just taken office. His Majesty might have other intentions in placing him in the Ministry of Works. Now it seems to be true.
"I understand! Is this what His Majesty meant?" Bai Miaoke figured out the key to the matter. As the new top scholar selected by the emperor himself, it was natural for her brother to work for His Majesty.
Lu Yu nodded without comment, still staring at the woman in front of him, wanting to raise his hand to smooth out her brows that were slightly furrowed in thought.
Bai Miaoke did not give him a chance and continued, "So His Majesty had long suspected that the Grand Tutor was up to something in Jiangnan, so he arranged for my brother to go to the Ministry of Works to investigate, and he actually found out that the Ministry of Works' accounts were falsified."
The letter was not written by Bai Yongsi, so it must have been a message from Lu Yu's men. The letter said that they had investigated the Ministry of Industry's accounts for the past decade and found that a large amount of money flowed into Gusu in the south of the Yangtze River many times every year under the pretext of repairing official roads and water conservancy projects.
Even though Bai Miaoke didn't know much about the court, she knew that most of the people in the Ministry of Works were the confidants promoted by Grand Tutor Ma Hongzhe. With this in mind, it was obvious who they were working for.
The letter only said that Bai Yongsi had found problems with the accounts of money expenditures, but it was not known where the money had flowed into Gusu.
"You went to Jiangnan for this matter, right?" Bai Miaoke suddenly realized. She had always been curious about why Lu Yu went to Jiangnan, but she didn't expect it was also to investigate the Grand Tutor. And seeing how he was always secretive, he was probably traveling in secret.
Lu Yu smiled and nodded: "My wife is really smart."
This was an admission. His Majesty had asked him to keep it secret, so he did not reveal it on his own initiative, but let Bai Miaoke guess it herself, which did not count as disobeying the emperor's order.
Bai Miaoke figured it out more, and she continued, "You claimed to be sick in Beijing to cover up the fact that you left Beijing." There was no doubt in her tone, but a firm tone.
"Yes." Lu Yu said frankly.
"But your tracks were still exposed, which led to the pursuit. Were these assassins sent by the Grand Tutor?" Bai Miaoke continued to speculate.
"yes."
"So," Bai Miaoke took a deep breath before continuing.
"You go to great lengths to accompany me, not because you like me, but because you want me to protect you?"
After these words were spoken, the atmosphere became eerily quiet.
Lu Yu didn't expect her to ask this question, and subconsciously wanted to deny it, but this unconvincing denial got stuck in his throat and he couldn't speak for a while.
Bai Miaoke still looked at him steadily, with no other expression on her face, but she was unusually persistent in giving an answer.
"No." Lu Yu looked at her expression gradually calming down, and finally couldn't help but speak.
"The reason why we planned to go the same route is just for my personal reasons. If there is any danger, it is more important for you to protect yourself. I don't want you to be in danger because of me." Lu Yu said slowly and firmly, and there was a bit of worry in his usually sharp and deep eyes.
"Okay, I get it. We will arrive in Jiangnan safely." Bai Miaoke smiled again, as if she had believed his words and was no longer bothered by them.
How can I explain the word love?
Lu Yu smiled bitterly. The man who could debate with a hundred people and a group of scholars at the same time didn't know how to defend himself at this moment.
"By the way, my brother is in Beijing...he shouldn't be in danger, right?" Bai Miaoke started to worry about her brother's safety again.
"No, I had already arranged secret guards to protect him before leaving Beijing." Lu Yu replied.
"Thank you very much, Prime Minister." Bai Miaoke bowed to him with a smile.
The address was changed back to Prime Minister, but Lu Yu did not correct her again.
Although her tone was the same as before, Lu Yu was able to detect her alienation. He lowered his eyes to hide his disappointment and replied in the same high-sounding manner, "Your brother is a pillar of society, so he should be well protected."
Bai Miaoke nodded, "You are also a pillar of society, and you should be protected."
Hearing this, Lu Yu knew that she did not believe his words that he liked her, and he did not know how to respond for a moment.
Fortunately, Bai Miaoke didn't want to wait for any answer. She suddenly stood up and said, "I'll go see how Chun Xing is doing."
After saying that, he walked out of the room without waiting for Lu Yu to answer.
The door was closed tightly, blocking out the helpless sigh from inside the room.
Bai Miaoke walked quickly to Chun Xing's room. She was already asleep on the bed. Bai Miaoke sat down beside the bed quietly.
His eyes fell on Chun Xing's peaceful sleeping face, but his mind had already flown far away.
She couldn't help but think back to everything that had happened since she met Lu Yu. It was obvious that they had a mutually beneficial relationship from the beginning. Even a few days ago, he said that he liked her. She should have known that there was no way a powerful official who was involved in the world of pleasure could be easily moved.
Protecting him to Jiangnan would be very helpful for her investigation of the Grand Tutor, so she should accept it.
But Bai Miaoke felt empty inside for no apparent reason, and she simply attributed it to the pity that a man with such good looks and demeanor might not be able to be her son-in-law.
"Miss, Miss, wake up." Chun Xing's voice came into her ears.
Bai Miaoke realized that she had been leaning on the bed, thinking about random things for a long time, and fell asleep without realizing it.
"How are you?" Bai Miaoke had long forgotten the slight sense of loss before going to bed and asked about Chun Xing's health with concern.
"Much better. Fugui came to check on me this afternoon and said it was seasickness. He told me to stay in the room and avoid going out to see water. That would be better." Chun Xing replied.
"I didn't expect Fugui to be a real doctor. Stay here for the next two days and tell me if you have anything to say."
"But I still have to serve the young lady." Chun Xing still wanted to fight for it.
"I don't need you to serve me here, just have a good rest." Bai Miaoke pretended to put on a stern face.
Thinking that Bai Miaoke and Lu Yu were in the same guest room and it might not be convenient for her to go in, Chun Xing gave up.
The two chatted for a while and then it was time for dinner.
Fugui knocked on the door and came to deliver medicine: "Miss Chunxing, I'm here to deliver some soothing decoction."
Bai Miaoke got up and went to open the door. "Thank you very much. I thought it was inconvenient to cook medicine on the boat."
"Miss Bai, you are too polite. My master arranged for someone to borrow the kitchen from the kitchen staff." Fugui answered respectfully.
Bai Miaoke was a little surprised that Lu Yu was so thoughtful, and said, "Thank your master for me."
"Miss Bai, why don't you just say it yourself? The young master is still waiting for you to have dinner." Fugui said.
In fact, Lu Yu did not ask him to invite Miss Bai to dinner. He just found that his son was in a bad mood in the afternoon and wanted to ask Miss Bai to cheer him up.
Bai Miaoke didn't doubt him, took the medicine bowl and said, "Okay, I'll be there soon."
After watching Chun Xing finish drinking the medicine, Bai Miaoke returned to the guest room with Lu Yu.
Fugui was standing by the door, and when he saw her he immediately opened the door for her, saying, "Madam is back."
Bai Miaoke raised her eyebrows in surprise. It was the first time she was called Madam, so she was somewhat used to it.
When she entered the room, she found Lu Yu sitting at the table, which was already filled with some fine food and wine.
Bai Miaoke smiled at him and sat down opposite him.
Lu Yu poured a cup of tea and placed it in front of her.
"Thank you." Bai Miaoke took a sip of the tea, then picked up her chopsticks and started eating.
Lu Yu also picked up the dishes from time to time. He had been thinking for the whole afternoon about how to prove that he had no intention of taking advantage of her. Now facing her innocent look, he felt that words were too pale.
A gentleman is judged by deeds rather than intentions, so he still has plenty of time to prove his sincerity.
So neither of them mentioned what happened in the afternoon, and they finished the meal in a fairly harmonious atmosphere.
Bai Miaoke naturally walked to the chaise longue and started to spread the quilt. Since Chun Xing was not there, she had to do it herself. Unexpectedly, she was interrupted by Lu Yu as soon as she started.
"I have made a bed for you, and you sleep in the inner room."
"Did you make my bed?" Bai Miaoke asked with a raised eyebrow, doubting whether a noble man like him would do such a thing.
"You'll know if you go and take a look." Lu Yu said in a light tone, but his back was straight.
Bai Miaoke noticed his expression of seeking praise, and suddenly felt that he was like the little black dog she raised, both of them liked to puff out their chests and wait for her praise.
So he turned and went into the house.
