Chapter 143 Fleeting Clouds

Nan Yi touched her left cheek, staring blankly as he left, until the snow water soaked her clothes and the cold hit her head. She murmured in a frenzy, "You hit me again."

This is the second time, and each time it's more ruthless than the last.

Nan Yi slowly got up from the ground, brushed the snowflakes off her body, and glanced indifferently at the study. Memories of the past surfaced in her mind, and their love seemed as fleeting as clouds.

For a modern woman like her, three years here have been quite an eventful one. The mansion is not peaceful, and when she escapes outside, she encounters that mess.

People in ancient times were more adventurous than people today.

Why not just enjoy a peaceful life instead of stirring up trouble? But we'll see if she's willing to play along. Scheming and intrigue are too tiring; she doesn't want to play, and she can't win anyway.

Placing the peony in her bedroom was simply a ploy to sow discord between her and the Fourth Master; the scheme succeeded.

On the issue of children, the fourth uncle shared the same goal as her, and they even struggled with the decision many times.

Now it's not that the two of them can't have children, but that she doesn't want to. You can imagine how furious the Fourth Master is.

That was a brilliant move.

The snow fell even heavier, and the world was covered in pure white. With her hands behind her back, she felt as if she had returned to the mountains, admiring the white expanse with great interest.

Amidst the swirling snow, on the empty path, a slender figure strolled leisurely, as if walking among worldly sages.

Occasionally, servants passing by would see this scene and be astonished. In the midst of heavy snow, Consort Tong was not even wearing a cotton-padded coat. Had she gone mad or become stupid?

When she returned to Wanyue Pavilion, she was frozen stiff, but she was in good spirits and had a smile on her face. Granny Qiu waited for her at the gate of the courtyard, wrapped her up tightly, and welcomed her into the house. She couldn't tell whether her mistress had explained things clearly to the master.

Qingyun tentatively asked, but Nan just smiled and didn't say anything. He bathed, changed his clothes, and even ate. His master seemed to be in a good mood and had a good appetite. There was nothing wrong with him.

After dark, Nan smiled and told the maids to go and rest, as she didn't like the maids keeping watch in the bedroom at night.

Qingyun felt uneasy and went to ask Aunt Qiu for advice. Aunt Qiu didn't say anything, and Yiren's investigation into the scheming against her master also yielded no results. The three of them sat together for a long time without saying a word.

“We understand our master’s temperament. If anything happens, let’s just pretend we didn’t see it,” Yiren said.

"What do you mean?" Qingyun asked.

Yiren lay down on the bed and said with a smile, "What else could it be? What does Master like to do most when he's unhappy?"

Qingyun thought about what her master used to love to do most, slowly climbed into bed, pulled the blanket over her head, and mumbled, "I know."

Yiren took out a few silver notes from her bosom and placed them on the side of the bed. "Granny, thank you for your trouble."

Granny Qiu picked up the silver note and sighed, "I'm already so old, half of my body is buried in the ground, I don't know how many more beatings I can endure."

When faced with a capricious master, even a servant can't do anything about it.

Yiren comforted her, saying righteously, "It's alright, Granny, I'll take your punishment from now on."

“Me too.” Qingyun stuck her head out.

Granny Qiu didn't refuse, and said with a smile that it was good. Wanyue Pavilion may lack many things, but it has no shortage of human touch. The maids are just like their masters, and they all have genuine personalities.

Getting a beating isn't that scary.

Yinzhen did not stay overnight at Weifang Courtyard. After having dinner with Lady Nian, he returned to his study, holding official documents but unable to read a single word.

Tong's voice filled my mind... "Believe me, I've done nothing wrong. What I did, I did; what I didn't, I didn't... I don't know where it came from... Let's not argue. You go and find out who's behind this. It really wasn't me, I swear..."

"Smack!" He slammed the booklet in his hand onto the table, pinching his brow with his fingertips. His head throbbed slightly. Should he believe her?

Yinzhen spread his right hand, which was hanging by his side, in front of his eyes and started to move again. The warmth of his palm was still there, as if it had been dipped in chili water. No wonder they say that the ten fingers are connected to the heart. His chest felt throbbing and uncomfortable.

Su Peisheng

"Your servant is here."

He stood up and said, "Fetch a basin of water."

Su Peisheng glanced at his master and saw that his master was staring intently at his hands. He understood immediately that his master was regretting his actions.

Why bother? He didn't show any mercy when he hit her. Master Tong was stunned by the beating. She has such a stubborn personality, she won't listen to either soft or hard approaches, and she's extremely difficult to coax.

The master suffers the consequences of his own actions.

He ran out quickly and ordered someone to fetch water. When the water was brought to the master, Yinzhen washed his hands, but as soon as he put his hands into the water, his face darkened. "Change to cold water."

Su Peisheng felt a chill run down his spine. Without saying a word, he quickly changed the water to cold water. After the cold water came in, he saw his master rubbing his hands vigorously for a long time until the skin was almost broken and his whole hands were frozen red.

Little Su dared not advise her master about his self-destructive behavior and could only watch anxiously.

After rubbing his hands together and wiping them with a handkerchief, Yinzhen returned to his desk, picked up the official documents, and continued reading. When he tried to write, his fingers were stiff and numb, and he could barely hold the pen.

"Master, it's late. Shouldn't you wash up and rest?" Su Peisheng picked up the pen that had fallen onto the table and gently reminded him.

Yinzhen, regaining his senses, nodded and casually began to wash and dress. Xiao Suzi laid out the bedding, leaving one soft pillow behind and intending to take the other one with her.

"lay down."

Su Peisheng looked at his master, then at the soft pillow in his hand, and obediently put it down. He then went to get the quilt. Usually, when Master Tong stayed overnight in the study, there were two quilts on the bed, even though they might not be needed.

"lay down."

Su Peisheng twitched his lips, put down the quilt, and tidied up. When his master waved his hand, he hurriedly retreated to the outer room.

There are three personal eunuchs by the master's side. Gao Wuyong and Quanfu take turns with him. When he went to the outer room, Quanfu came over and whispered in his ear, "Poor Master Tong. He went back in a thin shirt and got soaked in the snow. I wonder if he caught a cold."
