"Little sister, don't look anymore, it's all burned down, a fire that lasted a whole day and night!" Tong Tinglan cried and collapsed to the ground.
Seeing her mother heartbroken, Yun'er sensibly ran to Tong Tinglan and said, "Mother, don't cry. Uncle is watching over us from heaven. If you cry, they will cry too."
Tong Tinglan looked at her young daughter. She had been divorced by her husband's family and had thought she could still rely on her own family. Now that her family was gone, who would she rely on in the future, and what would happen to her daughter?
With her father and brother suddenly gone, Tong Tinglan, unsure of what the future held, was overcome with grief. What had she done wrong in her past life to deserve such a tragic fate in this one?
"Mother, I'm scared," Yun'er said, clutching her mother's sleeve tightly.
She is already seven years old. Although she is the legitimate daughter, she is not favored in the Li family. Despite her young age, she is very sensible.
The wet nurse from the Li family told her that without her biological father's protection and with her divorced mother, she would suffer a lot in the future.
She wasn't afraid of hardship. Her father didn't like her, her grandparents disliked her, and only her mother loved her the most.
Mother said that the Li family didn't want them, but they could go to their maternal grandparents' house, where their maternal grandfather and uncles would protect them. However, now that their maternal grandfather and uncles were gone, would she and her mother be homeless?
Yinzhen glanced at Madam Tong, who was holding her daughter and crying bitterly, then walked past them and headed toward Nan Yi, who was searching through the ruins. "Yi'er, calm down."
"Calm down, how can I calm down?" Nan Yi shook off Yinzhen's hand that was trying to pull her, kicked away a piece of broken wood, and brushed the ashes from the ground. Her voice trembled as she said, "Something must have been left behind. It's impossible for it to have burned so cleanly. Human bones are so hard. If it were all burned, what a joke. I don't believe it, I don't believe it."
Twenty-three people, twenty-three living lives, gone just like that.
She had planned to visit the Tong family in Tongzhou after settling in the villa, but the Eighth Prince Yintang was assassinated, and Xu Huaiyu caused trouble. She was delayed for about twenty days, and less than a month later, she was separated from him forever.
In her past life, she hadn't repaid the kindness of her adoptive parents when she suddenly died in a foreign land. In this life, she took over the body of the original owner but failed to fulfill her filial duties, and the Tong family was gone again.
Human tragedy repeats itself.
Did she offend the god of time travel, thus destined to have shallow family ties?
Tong's mother's voice and smile seemed to still be in her mind. She loved Tong's mother, who was as kind and cheerful as her adoptive mother.
A wave of heat rushed into her eyes. Nan Yi sniffed and asked in a low voice, "Who did this?"
"It's unclear at the moment, but it's very likely Xu Huaiyu," Yinzhen said, revealing his true thoughts.
"Xu Huaiyu".
Nan Yi grabbed a piece of wood as thick as his wrist, propped himself up, and said in a calm tone, but with a raging fury, "I want him to be torn to pieces."
"Crack—" The wood in his hand broke in half. Nan Yi threw away the broken piece of wood, turned his head to look at Yinzhen, and the coldness in his eyes made Yinzhen not want to look directly at him.
“And the Nian family,” Nan Yi added with a sinister smile.
Yinzhen's heart skipped a beat; the inevitable had come to pass. He frowned and looked at Nan Yi, warning him, "Do not act recklessly."
“Hehe,” Nan Yi smiled wickedly, his eyes fierce and sharp as knives falling on Yinzhen’s face. “The Nian family can’t escape. If they hadn’t dug a pit for the Tong family, the Tong family wouldn’t have been demoted or become commoners, and would have had to live in Tongzhou in such a sorry state. Even if they weren’t the murderers, they were still accomplices who caused all of this to happen. Their despicable nature is no different from that of the murderers.”
As she said this, she raised three fingers, her face showing ruthlessness. "I swear to God, I will never share the same sky with the Nian family, and you..." Nan Yi paused, then declared firmly, "If you stop me from taking revenge, I will sever all ties with you."
She wanted to sever all ties with him—a complete severance, indeed! Upon hearing this, Yinzhen trembled with rage, pointing a finger at her, "You're threatening me?"
Nan grinned, a forced smile on his face, and said, "You can think that way if you want, since they're the ones who provoked me."
"You insolent madwoman! You think you can touch the Nian family? Even I can't do anything to them. You think you're so great?" Yinzhen was so angry that he jumped up and down.
“It’s not that I can’t do anything to the Nian family, it’s just that you’re reluctant to do anything.” Nan Yi glanced at him with disdain. “Once I find Xu Huaiyu, I will settle all the scores with the Nian family.”
"You mustn't do anything reckless." If Nan Yi really wanted to use the Nian family to vent his anger on behalf of the Tong family, he wasn't even sure he could stop him.
This woman's skills are extraordinary.
Nan Yi ignored him and continued searching for any traces that the Tong family might have left behind.
"Did you hear what I said, Tong Yilan? Don't force me to put you under house arrest at this time," Yinzhen warned in a deep voice.
Nan Yishou paused. She had had enough of living this early in the morning. What did house arrest matter? If they pushed her too far, they would all perish together.
"Hmph, whatever. My life is worthless, not as noble as the Nian family. I can't take revenge. What's the use of living? At worst, I'll end it all and go to the underworld to apologize to my father and mother. As a daughter, I'm useless. I can only atone with my death."
Yinzhen's hands trembled, his temples throbbing with anger. He pointed at Tong Yilan, who was half-squatting on the ground, acting like a rogue and utterly unruly. He flicked his sleeve and said, "I'll go investigate the Tong family's affairs first, and then I'll reason with you when I get back."
Nan Yi truly didn't care; she was responsible for most of the Tong family's misfortunes.
Twenty-three lives. When they were alive, she avoided them and didn't take them too seriously. But when they suddenly disappeared in such a tragic way, Nan Yi's heart felt incredibly heavy, as if she were carrying a huge boulder on her back, making it impossible for her to straighten her back.
She could no longer freely rampage through this time and space.
Seeking revenge, allowing the unjustly killed members of the Tong family to rest in peace, might alleviate some of the guilt in her heart.
"Auntie." Yun'er knelt down beside her. "Auntie, it's me, Yun'er. Are you crying?"
