Chapter Fifty: Wanting to Be a Matchmaker

Xiao Xi chuckled and shook her head. "You've already helped so much. Let's take things slowly with my brother's matter." She was also too embarrassed to bother her any further.

"Young Master Xiao could start a small business," Xiao Shunzi suggested, seeing his master's distress.

The brother and sister shook their heads, "Doing business requires capital; without money, even the heroine Xiao will perish."

Xiao Shunzi secretly glared at his master. Even with the God of Wealth right in front of them, they didn't seize the opportunity. If their master let them off the hook, it would be enough for them to use.

Nan looked at Xiao Shunzi and tapped his bald head, wondering what he was up to. She and Xiao Xi were friends; making it too obvious would only annoy people.

She didn't want Xiao Xi to put her in an unequal position in their relationship, as that would be counterproductive.

But she still spoke up, "Xixi, if you trust me, just wait a few days. I'll have Shunzi let you know when I come up with a solution, okay?"

Xiao Xi nodded, and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Sigh, we're supposed to be friends, but I always end up troubling you."

“Since we’re friends, it’s too formal to say such things,” Nan Yi reassured him.

“Hmm,” the two smiled at each other.

Xiao Shunzi glanced at the sky and said, "Master, it's time to go back." His master was about to leave court, and they absolutely couldn't be caught, or they would both be doomed.

"Let's go then," Nan Yi readily agreed, not wanting to make things difficult for Shunzi.

"Xi Xi, if you need anything, go to the West Corner Gate and find Granny Zhao," Nan Yi instructed Xiao Xi again.

"I know, I will."

The master and servant bid farewell to the three siblings and quickly sneaked back to the mansion.

...

When Nan Yi returned to the manor, Yinzhen had not yet finished court. She looked at Mang Lu's lover Qingyun and the others.

After carefully examining the two, he ultimately felt that his lover was more suitable.

“Girl, come here. Qingyun will go and call Yiren and the others,” she said to her lover. “Sit here,” she pointed to the stool by the kang (heated brick bed).

The lover bent down to sit, noticing the teasing look in her master's eyes. The lover was puzzled; he had become mysterious after going out. She would find Shunzi to find out more about it tomorrow.

After the maids entered the outer room, Nan Yi chuckled, "Please sit down, everyone. I have something to tell you, it's great news."

"What good news, Master?" Yiren asked first.

"A lifelong commitment," Nan Yi teased.

“Our master loves to tease us,” the lover rolled her eyes.

Nan tapped her on the head, "Oh, you've gotten quite temperamental."

"Hey, to be honest, he's a really good prospect. As the saying goes, 'Don't let the good stuff go to outsiders,'" she said, explaining Xiao Ran's situation to them after a good day's harvest.

Seeing that the four maids remained silent, all blushing and very shy, she wanted to be a matchmaker.

"No, if you have any thoughts, tell me, Master," seeing that they were still shy, he sighed that they were people of the past, and dared not casually reveal their opinions on such an important matter as marriage.

Her lover and Qingfeng were maids she brought from her maiden home. They had served her since childhood and were older than her.

According to Aunt Qiu, the maids in the manor would be released to marry when they reached a certain age. She originally thought this was a good thing.

But Qiu's mother sighed, saying that the girls were all of marriageable age and were getting on in years; what good families could they possibly marry into?

If the masters in the manor have other considerations, they may very well arrange a marriage for her.

The lover was twenty and Qingfeng was nineteen, both in the prime of their lives, yet in this era, they had become old maids.

As for marriage partners, what good ones could they be? It's better for her to find someone herself; it's better than just marrying someone randomly.

"Alright, if you won't speak, I'll give my opinion. Among the four of you, the mistress is the oldest. I think we should find husbands for you according to your ages. That would be the fairest way. Of course, I will also consider whether it's suitable for you."

Nan Yi blurted it out in one breath, and fearing that the girls might have other ideas, he added, "It also depends on whether the lover is willing. I do think he's a good man."

Yi Ren chuckled, breaking the silence among the four. "This servant also thinks this is feasible," she said to her lover. "Sister lover, if you don't agree, then it can be mine."

The lover blushed and said to Yiren in a flustered tone, "I think it's nice too." Everyone laughed when they saw her anxiousness, fearing that someone else would actually snatch it away.

The mistress was really anxious. During the time her master was away from the mansion, Liu Mama, who was by the Fujin's side, took a fancy to her for some reason and even asked someone to arrange a marriage between her and her nephew.

Granny Liu's nephew runs errands for the Fujin (principal wife) in the outer courtyard. This boy is very arrogant because he has the Fujin as his backer and a good job.

This person is of questionable character and has an improper relationship with other maids.

On the other hand, since the primary wife was at odds with her master, she could not marry a steward whose interests conflicted with her master's.

With her mistress's high status, her personal maid naturally rose in status as well. If she were to marry an ordinary person, she would have the backing of her mistress and no one would dare to bully her.

Most importantly, she is of age, and if Granny Liu were to ask for a favor, the principal wife would find it difficult to refuse.

The person the master himself favored, though a commoner, was a law-abiding citizen, not a slave, which made him superior to Granny Liu's nephew.

"This servant is entirely at your master's behest," the lover said shyly.

Nan Yi was relieved. "In that case, I'll find an opportunity to let you two meet so you can each know each other better. I don't want an arranged marriage."

I hope they're all doing well. Women in the backyard are so boring, but finding husbands for the girls is at least a bit of fun.

“However, girl, if this works out, how much will you have to give me as a thank you for the matchmaking?” Nan winked at his lover.

The lover stomped her lips and said reproachfully, "They are masters themselves, why would they need to thank the matchmaker?"

The group laughed and joked, and Nan Yi laughed and scolded, "You talkative girl."

"What do you mean by a matchmaker's fee?" Yinzhen asked, puzzled, as he entered the room.

The girl was startled and quickly stood up to bow.
