Chapter Ninety-Six: All Concubines

"Please have a seat."

He beckoned to her. Nan Yi looked around, then strolled to the window and sat down on the couch. She was just out of the encirclement of Yinzhen and his wives and concubines. Everyone was happy that they didn't have to give up their seats and could get more attention from Yinzhen.

It's always like this, as if he doesn't belong here, nor does he blend in. He just watches and listens indifferently. Whether he pampers her or ignores her on weekdays, he stays neither too close nor too distant, neither too high nor too low. But that one slap that night destroyed all the deep affection between them.

Yinzhen frowned, and Lady Nian noticed it out of the corner of her eye. She said softly, "To be honest, I'm sorry to have wronged Sister Tong. Perhaps Consort De has misunderstood Sister Tong. I think that soon, Consort De's anger will subside, and Sister Tong may be able to regain her rank."

Dressed elegantly and beautifully, Madam Song interjected, covering her mouth with a smile, "Sister Nian is right. However, Sister Tong surprised me greatly outside the manor the other day. "It won't be long."

"Um?"

Yinzhen embraced her, repeating what sounded like a promise, "It won't be long. Once my rank rises, the side seat will still be yours."

He won't always be a prince; most of the princes have come of age, and it's only a matter of time before they are made kings.

Nan smiled and thought, "They're all concubines anyway."

After Yinzhen left with Lady Nian and Lady Lijia, the mansion was completely at peace. Nan Yi closed himself off to reflect on his actions, but he and Xiao Shunzi spent their days climbing over the wall to go out and play, either visiting Xiao Xi or hanging out with Yin Tang. He was completely unaware that he had become the laughing stock of the capital, which made Zhen Zhen cry several times. It was only after Nan Yi presented her with a lot of fashionable and exquisite clothes that she finally smiled through her tears.
