Chapter Seventy-Three: Repaying the Money

Without wasting words with her, Yinzhen picked her up and called out, "Someone come here."

Qingyun lifted the curtain and came in. Seeing this scene, she blushed slightly, lowered her head, and stepped aside.

"Find some clothes for your master?" Yinzhen held Tongdi tightly in his arms and whispered to the maid.

Qingyun agreed, secretly glancing at her master with a smile on her lips, and happily went to find clothes for her master. She thought to herself, "Sure enough, there's someone who can subdue someone else. Master is still the best."

Seeing Qingyun's smile out of the corner of her eye, Nan Yi said angrily, "Smile, smile, smile again and I'll marry you off."

Yinzhen's chest trembled slightly, and he smiled indulgently, saying, "You just mentioned not long ago that you would find them husbands."

Nan Yi glared at him, muttering that Shunzi hadn't found a suitable family yet.

When she finished getting ready and came out of the outer hall, her lover had already set out lunch: two dishes, a soup, and a small portion of rice in a wooden bucket, as usual.

His mood improved slightly. He remembered asking her why she used a wooden bucket to serve the rice. She said it made it taste better, but he couldn't taste the difference and just went along with her suggestion.

Yinzhen sat behind her, holding her unbound long hair in his palm so as not to disturb her eating. At this moment, all was quiet. He gazed at her, and the irritation that had been building up in his heart from not seeing her for three months subsided a little.

"My lord, Consort Nian has come to visit and is waiting outside the door," the lover reported from outside the door.

Nan Yi was taken aback, then turned away, ignoring him. Humph, his beloved woman had arrived. What was she doing here? She couldn't stand his pretentious, cold face.

Yinzhen glanced at her indifferently, tied her hair with a handkerchief, straightened his robes, and walked out. He didn't see her for the next two days. Nan Yi didn't take it seriously, but the maids were very worried for her.

"Yiren, how much is my dowry?"

Nan Yi retrieved all the hidden silver notes and counted them carefully. The total was more than 60,000 taels. She didn't remember how much money she had taken from those three people, but it was a lot. As good friends, she felt at ease robbing them and spending their money. After all, they were rich people.

But now that they've broken off their friendship with her, she feels guilty about spending the money again. It's always her fault. Besides, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Maybe they're also worried about the money. She should return it to them. If they can't be friends, returning it is better for everyone. Otherwise, she'll really become a con artist in their eyes.

Yiren said, "The master's dowry has 30,000 taels of silver, and not a single tael has been touched." She was somewhat proud. If we were to talk about the master's harem, the master probably had the most spare money. Others could only look on with envy.

Nan Yi's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't expected so much money; she thought they were broke. What a pleasant surprise!

She lowered her eyes again, carefully calculating, and sighed softly. She was happy to take other people's money, but when it came to taking her own, her heart ached as if it were being torn apart. She decided to be more frugal in the future.

Nan Yi slumped down, leaning against the couch, and said weakly, "Go and get ten thousand taels for me." Yi Ren was slightly suspicious. Why was her mistress touching her dowry? She had so much silver on hand and it wasn't enough to spend. Out of curiosity, she asked as well.

"Never mind that, I have a use for you."

"My lord, I still have 20,000 taels on hand."

Nan waved his hand and said, "That's for your household use, just take it."

"Oh," Yiren said reluctantly as she left.

Half an incense stick later, Nan looked at the box in her hand, her hands trembling as if she were cutting off a piece of her flesh. She handed it to Xiao Shunzi, who had come to do some errands along the way, and said, "Shunzi, go out of the manor and give this to Xiao Xi for me. Also, give her this letter. She will know what to do."

"Understood, Master," Shunzi took the box, but...

Nan handed it out, but couldn't bear to let go, her face full of conflict. She really swore she would never do such a stupid thing again.

"Master?" Shunzi looked at her with a conflicted expression, wondering whether to give it to her or not.

Nan Yi chuckled awkwardly, "Take it."

He then solemnly said to Xiao Shunzi, "You must take good care of it. If you lose it, you won't be able to pay for it with your lives. Remember, keep it a secret, especially don't let your master know."

"This servant understands."

"Go."

"twitter"

Xiao Shunzi looked suspicious and left like a thief, followed by several tails. He had the expression of someone on a secret mission, making it hard not to arouse suspicion. Fortunately, he wasn't really stealing; he was just delivering something, so no one suspected anything.

When Xiao Xi received the gifts, she was shocked. She had never seen so many silver notes in her life. She was amazed and deeply moved by Nan Yi's trust in her. Being usually shrewd, she didn't go to the Tenth Prince's residence until the afternoon of the second day.

Eighth Prince's Residence

The two brothers had just finished court today when the Ninth Prince followed the Eighth Prince back to the mansion. Without saying a word, he kept clamoring for a drink.

"Oh dear, what's going on? Has the sky fallen?" The Eighth Prince's wife walked straight over, sat down next to the Eighth Prince, and teased the Ninth Prince who was drinking heavily.

The Ninth Prince chuckled, his laughter filled with desolation and bitterness. He exclaimed, "It's more painful than the sky falling down!"

If the sky falls, we'll all perish together at most. But what's going on now? He's caught in a dilemma, unable to move forward or backward. He's so frustrated he wants to punch someone, especially her, but he can't bring himself to do it.

The Eighth Prince's wife was slightly taken aback and looked at her husband, "Is it really that serious?" The Eighth Prince shook his head and said calmly, "It's hard to say clearly."

"Crack!" The sound of a wine glass shattering rang out. The Eighth Prince and his wife turned their heads at the same time, and heard the Ninth Prince say, "Eighth Sister-in-law, tell me, aren't you women all liars?"

The Eighth Prince's wife frowned, puzzled, and asked, "Where should we begin?"

"Heh, deceiving people, deceiving money, deceiving sincerity, isn't that enough?" The Ninth Prince growled angrily. That woman had deceived him in the same way.

The Eighth Prince's wife was taken aback. "Oh, who stole your money and your sincerity?"

"Of course..."

"Ninth Brother." The Eighth Prince suddenly interrupted him, his voice slightly angry. What had Ninth Brother gone mad? How could he actually want to say such things? Where was Nan Yi? If people found out, her reputation would be ruined. Fourth Brother would not forgive her either, and Father Emperor would probably order her to be executed. This was definitely not what he wanted to see.

Actually, the fault lay with them. It wasn't that they were curious about how so many things happened later; it was that they cared too much and lost their composure and ability to think.

The Eighth Prince's wife stared blankly at her husband. She was almost about to ask what they were hiding from her. Could her cousin's grief-stricken appearance be related to a woman?

The Ninth Prince froze upon hearing the shout, abruptly stopping. Cold sweat instantly soaked his inner garment; he had almost… almost… Indeed, drinking had led to trouble. He threw down his wine cup, rose, and went to the pavilion to cool off in the breeze.

The Eighth Prince glanced at his wife, took her hand, and said softly, "Jinzhi, my Ninth Brother and I have some things to discuss. Have the servants prepare some food and tell them not to come near."

"But..." The Eighth Prince's wife was very curious and really didn't want to leave.

The Eighth Prince said, "You shouldn't know this. You don't know that your mouth can't keep secrets."

Oh, so this means he's admitting that the woman was involved, and that it was Ninth Brother who caused it. Eighth Princess covered her mouth and laughed. Thank goodness, it had nothing to do with her husband. Although she felt sorry for Ninth Brother and his sister, she couldn't do much about it.

"Alright, I'll go first. You two can talk," she glanced at the people in the distance, and swayed away.
