Chapter Twenty-Seven: An Unexpected Encounter with Emperor Kangxi

Under the blazing sun, the two women, mistress and servant, were standing precariously in front of the palace gate when Yinzhen arrived. He paused briefly, then glanced at them with a cold expression and walked past. Thirteenth Prince glanced at the mistress and servant before following them into Yonghe Palace.

Qingyun supported her master with heartache. She was exhausted too, but she persevered. However, her master's condition was truly disheartening. She felt indignant for her master and comforted him with a choked voice, "Master, just bear with it a little longer, it will be over soon..."

A familiar hem of her clothes brushed past her, and she chuckled softly. Look at men, one moment they're all sweet talk, the next they're so cold and indifferent.

"Girl, I'm sorry to have troubled you. I'll reward you when we get back." After arriving in the Qing Dynasty, what comforted her was that she had those silver notes she had swindled. Hehe, no, there were also those few, plus the loyal maid in the villa, which gave her some sense of security.

Qingyun shook her head. "It's what I should do. Besides, my master has rewarded me enough." Thinking of this, she felt better. Hehe, she had made a small fortune.

Nan Yichao winked at her, "No need to save your master money, I have money, I'm so rich I only have money."

The two tried to find humor in their suffering, chatting about jokes to relieve the stiffness and pain in their bodies.

Inside the palace, Consort De seemed unaffected, chatting with her two sons who came to pay their respects, neither of them mentioning Lady Tong at the gate.

When the Fourteenth Prince arrived, he greeted his mother, and then snuggled up to Consort De. Consort De looked at the Fourteenth Prince with affection, and gently tapped his forehead with her hand stained with bright red nail polish. "You have such a sweet tongue. You're a little later than your fourth brother and the thirteenth brother today."

Fourteen laughed, "How can I compare to Fourth Brother and Thirteenth Brother, who are both busy? I'll come together as soon as I get my assignment."

"That's wonderful!" Consort De exclaimed, beaming.

Fourteenth then turned to his fourth brother and said, "Fourth brother, may I go and pay my respects to your wife today?"

"You just want to go have some fun, don't you?" Thirteen teased.

Fourteen feigned anger, "Why did you say it if you knew? It makes people lose face."

Everyone burst into laughter.

"Is it alright, Fourth Brother?" Fourteenth Brother asked again.

Yinzhen nodded to his younger brother, and the Fourteenth Prince was overjoyed. He then turned to Consort De and asked, "Mother, is that Sister-in-law Tong outside?"

Consort De's expression changed slightly upon hearing this, and she felt a surge of resentment. Tong Shi was married to her son, so she had no choice but to listen to her. What did it matter that woman had a high position? She had no son. Who would remember her after she passed away?

Unlike her, who has two good sons, who might rise to high positions in the future and become Empress Dowager, then let's see how that woman can still cause trouble.

Seeing his mother's silence, Fourteenth Prince understood a bit more, so he stopped mentioning them and started talking to Thirteenth Prince about other things.

Outside Yonghe Palace, Nan Yi could no longer hold on. In a daze, a bright yellow figure seemed to walk from the side, followed by a large group of people. When the person came into view, the bright yellow figure stood in front of the master and servant. Nan Yi was still wondering who it was. Even though he couldn't see clearly, he still felt a powerful aura.

Qingyun was so frightened that she fell to the ground with a thud. Nanyi, having lost her support, also collapsed to the ground, panting heavily, sweat dripping from her forehead to the corners of her eyes, blurring her vision.

A sharp voice shouted, "How dare you! His Majesty has arrived, yet you do not pay your respects!"

"Your Majesty, who is it?" Nan Yi raised his weak hand to wipe the sweat from the corner of his eye. When he saw who it was, he was so frightened that his eyes widened and he murmured, "...alive...alive..."

Qingyun covered her master's mouth, trembling with shock, and whispered a reminder, "Master, it's the Emperor."

Nan realized what had happened and her mind cleared instantly. She then remembered what she had said and immediately felt a cool breeze on her neck, and the hot sweat on her back turned cold.

She quickly prostrated herself on the ground, about to speak, but forgot her greeting. After thinking for a while, she said, "Tong Yilan greets Your Majesty. May Your Majesty be blessed."

Is it okay to say it this way?

Upon hearing her master's greeting, Qingyun sighed inwardly, feeling utterly unlucky today. She and Yiren had been teaching her at home for so long, how could she have forgotten everything at the last minute?

Kangxi looked at the disheveled master and servant, pondered for a long time, and then thought, "Hmm, I recognize this wife. She's from the fourth prince's family. I personally arranged the marriage a year ago. She seems to be a girl from the Tong family."

Having been married into the prince's household for a year, the Tong family's daughter's behavior was quite... ...even her greetings were wrong, which puzzled him greatly.

Perhaps the nannies have become lax.

Qingyun stepped forward with a stiff upper lip. “Your Majesty, this servant greets you. Long live the Emperor! Please allow me to report that the Consort fell ill two months ago. After waking up, she forgot some things, which is why her behavior is somewhat abnormal. Please forgive her, Your Majesty.”

Qingyun tried her best to find the right words.

The girl is right, Nan thought to himself.

"Oh, I forgot something." That makes sense.

"So what's going on now?" In the middle of the day, under the blazing sun, this is what Consort De ordered?

"Reply..." Qingyun was about to answer when he saw Kangxi wave his hand and look at his master.

Nan Yi saw Kangxi glance at her and raise his finger to point at her. Did he want her to reply?

Kangxi nodded slightly. "If you lose your memory, you'll become stupid." A series of question marks filled the emperor's mind.

Nan Yi swallowed hard and answered weakly in a low voice, "Your Majesty, I went to the palace to pay my respects to the Empress today, but... but I got lost and was late, so, um..." She was so hungry and thirsty; ancient mothers-in-law were truly perverted when they punished people.

Emperor Kangxi found it amusing. "Lost? It seems my Forbidden City is indeed too large." His tone was not without a hint of teasing pride.

“Of course,” Nan Yi blurted out, then covered her mouth. Oh no, she was doomed. The Emperor could only sigh, “Why did she have to be so talkative?”

Li Dequan glanced at Tong Shi and thought to himself, "This girl is a bit bold, but she has no sense of propriety and not a bit of the cleverness and tact of the Imperial Concubine."

Kangxi remained expressionless, but inwardly he chuckled. What an interesting girl, daring to answer him so casually without using honorifics. Curious, he asked, "When did you enter the palace, girl?"
