Chapter Two: Sneaking into the City

Qingyun watched as his master's face displayed a range of emotions—excitement, agitation, sadness, and finally, a sense of entanglement and helplessness.

She was a newly transferred maid who served the concubine closely. She was not a maid who was used to serving her master before, and she did not understand the concubine's temperament, so she did not know how to comfort her master.

The head maid of the Imperial Household Department said that the newly arrived maids should speak less, look less, listen less and do more. Before they understood their master's intentions, it was best not to stand out. So she pretended to be a blockhead.

In the residence of the Fourth Prince, Yinzhen was holding an official document, his eyes fixed on the report, but his mind was on the other side of the palace. After thinking for a moment, he asked Xiao Shunzi, who was standing beside him, "Has any news come from the other side of the palace?"

Xiao Shunzi was lost in thought when he was suddenly asked a question by his master. He paused for a moment, recalling the reply from the person in the other courtyard the day before yesterday. He hesitated, wondering whether to tell or not.

"Is there anything I can't say, um—"

Xiao Shunzi trembled slightly. The April weather was still a bit cold. He pursed his lips and decided to spill everything out. "Reporting to Your Excellency, someone from the other courtyard said that the concubine has forgotten everything from the past, and it's quite serious."

After hearing this, Yinzhen was taken aback and asked, "What did the imperial physician say?"

Excessive worry can cause amnesia—that's absurd, and he still didn't believe it much. But... "Is there any cure?"

Xiao Shunzi said, "According to the people from the other courtyard, the imperial physician couldn't do anything either. The concubine can only try to cheer herself up, and maybe she'll recover."

She had completely forgotten the concubine's name, and then reported to Yinzhen on the concubine's recent situation after waking up.

Upon hearing this, Yinzhen instructed, "Send a note to Physician Wu and ask him to come to another courtyard to treat the concubine again."

He could forget about it, but he needed to take care of his health. He didn't have many children, and his principal wife had difficulty conceiving. It would be fine if his concubine could give birth. Moreover, Tong's status was higher than the other concubines. If she could get pregnant, it would put an end to his worries. So he put it aside and didn't mention it again.

"twitter!"

Nan Yi was unaware that Yinzhen had his eye on her. She was still trying to figure out how to survive in the Qing Dynasty, whether to make a big splash or live a quiet life. The thought of this made her feel really bored.

A concubine is a secondary wife.

Her adoptive parents disliked her unusually unruly personality and sent her, disguised as a man, to be disciplined by an old friend who had become a monk in his youth.

Life on the mountain was mundane and boring. Her fellow disciples appeared obedient and well-behaved on the surface, but in reality, they were even more wicked than she was.

A young girl mingled among a group of teenagers, and they covered for each other, often engaging in underhanded activities behind their master's back.

Ten years couldn't temper her unruly nature; on the contrary, because of her talent, she developed excellent skills on the mountain and became even more lawless.

Three hundred years ago in the Qing Dynasty, if she hadn't been worried about her adoptive parents, she would have thought that coming here was quite a good thing.

Even if she got married, how could the prince's harem possibly confine her?

"Qingyun, let's go for a walk."

After lying in bed for more than ten days, Nan Yi was getting restless. Having been hyperactive since childhood, she couldn't stay still for a moment, a trait related to her martial arts training. Since that man had only visited once, and hadn't come again, she felt safe enough to wander around the garden.

Qingyun looked at her mistress, who had begged her many times. She thought it wouldn't be good for her mistress to stay cooped up in her room, so she agreed. Besides, she was thinking of serving the concubine well, gaining her favor, and thus securing a good future.

“Okay, Master, wear something warm,” Qingyun said with a smile, picking up a thick outer robe and helping Nan Yi put it on.

The master and servant strolled slowly through the garden. When they reached the pavilion and sat down, a maidservant placed four kinds of snacks and tea on the stone table.

Looking around at the scenery, Nan Yihuan took a deep breath. There were no tall buildings or mansions, only small bridges, flowing water, pavilions, and towers. In an era without pollution, the air was exceptionally fresh, and his mood was unusually peaceful.

She hadn't gone out in all these days. In this huge garden, apart from the servants, she was the only mistress. Qingyun, who was by her side, was very proper and never overstepped the boundaries. His servility was ingrained in his bones, making her quite boring. There was no one around her who would speak seriously.

Nan Yi racked her brains, trying to find a way to go out of the garden. She was feeling much better now, and it was convenient for her since that man wasn't coming. She was the kind of person who couldn't stay still; asking her to stay cooped up in the courtyard all day would be harder than climbing to heaven.

"Qingyun, go back to your room."

Before he could even settle in, Nan Yi went back to his bedroom. Qing Yun didn't know why his master went back to his room so soon after coming out, but staying in his room was better for someone who had just recovered from an illness.

Nan returned to her bedroom, sat down in front of the dressing table, and fiddled with her newly combed hair. Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind, and she said to Qingyun, "Qingyun, do you have any old clothes that you don't wear anymore? Bring me a set."

Qingyun didn't dare ask any more questions. She went back to her room, grabbed her nearly new clothes that she usually couldn't bear to wear, and handed them to Nan Yi. "Go ahead and do your work. I want to sleep. Wake me up in two hours. Don't disturb me before two hours are up. Remember that."

Qingyun was taken aback, then dutifully reminded him, "Lunch is about to start, Master, you should..."

Nan interrupted her, "I'm full from the snacks," thinking she could sneak out right away, and made up an excuse at random. Little did she know that Qingyun was always meticulous and whether her excuse would hold water.

Qingyun recalled that she had been by her master's side the whole time. Her master clearly hadn't eaten any snacks, but he didn't scold her. Whatever her master said was law, and she, as a maid, had no right to object. When she went out, she closed the door behind her and had the little maid stand guard at the door.

Seeing that Qingyun had already left, Nan Yi bolted the door, quickly ran to the bathroom, changed her clothes, and then loosened her hair. Her long, black hair, reaching her hips, was a challenge for her.

Hairstyles for Qing Dynasty girls are not easy to do. After thinking for a long time without finding a solution, she scratched her head in frustration. Time was of the essence, so she finally took a strand of hair from each side of her temples, braided them into plaits, and secured them with ribbons at the back of her head as decoration, leaving the rest of her hair loose at the back.
