Before Su Er could even exchange a few words with Jiang Siyan, he heard a voice urging him to start a meeting in the background.
Although Su Er wanted to chat with him a little longer, she was afraid of disturbing his work, so she said goodbye briefly and hung up the phone.
Not long after she hung up the phone, there was a knock on her door. It was Lin Shuqin, "Xiao Er."
Su Er put on her slippers and jogged to the door. "Coming!"
Lin Shuqin came in carrying a lunchbox, glanced at the papers spread out on the table, put down the bag and tidied them up for her. "Still reading the script?"
Su Er took out the boxed lunches from the bag, placed them on the table one by one, and opened them. "No, I just flipped through them randomly."
Lin Shuqin knew all too well how much effort went behind her casualness, so she comforted her, saying, "Xiao Er, you actually did a pretty good job acting today. Don't be too carefree. Eat and drink as usual, and it's good to go out for a walk when you have time, okay?"
Su Er was amused. "Sister Qin, what kind of agent would advise their artist not to work so hard? They all wish their artists would bury themselves in their studies."
Lin Shuqin lightly tapped her head with her chopsticks, "You little ingrate, I was just worried you'd get stuck on things and put too much pressure on yourself."
Su Er moved closer to Lin Shuqin and smiled sweetly, "Thank you, Sister Qin, you're the best."
Lin Shuqin wasn't buying her act of being coquettish or unreasonable. "Just relax and now, eat your food properly."
"Understood!"
Seeing how happy Su Er was, Lin Shuqin found it even harder to speak. She sighed inwardly and waited until Su Er had finished eating before clearing her throat and casually asking, "Xiao Er, have you been in contact with that person lately?"
Su Er wiped her mouth with a tissue. "Yes, he just called me. What's wrong?"
Lin Shuqin asked again, "What did you talk about?"
This question is clearly unusual; Lin Shuqin is not the type of person who would pry into her private life.
Su Er frowned slightly and became serious, but still honestly answered Lin Shuqin's question first: "Just some miscellaneous things, nothing important."
"Sister Qin, is something the matter?" Su Er asked suspiciously.
Lin Shuqin looked at her, feeling a pang of pity, but thinking that it was better to cut to the chase than to drag things out any longer, she steeled her resolve and said, "Xiao Er, I've heard some news."
Su Er's expression shifted from curiosity to bewilderment. Time seemed to stand still at that moment, and all she could hear was silence. She could no longer hear what Lin Shuqin was saying.
She stared blankly at the ground, her pupils unfocused. Every word that reached her ears seemed to turn into crawling insects, gnawing at her heart.
A bitter taste rose in her throat, and Su Er blinked. "So... you mean he might be getting married, is that right?"
“I don’t know the specifics of Jiang Siyan’s situation, but his parents seem to be interested.” Lin Shuqin couldn’t bear to see her like this, so she took her hand. “Hasn’t he mentioned anything to you?”
Su Er shook his head blankly. They had just spoken on the phone, but he hadn't said anything to her.
But why not say it? Is it because it's just a rumor, or do you feel there's no need to tell her?
Lin Shuqin said worriedly, "Xiao Er, you still need to think about this carefully. Whether it's true or false, this day will come sooner or later. There are quite a few people watching you now. Once they get married, and you're exposed, your reputation won't be good. Once these stains are placed on you, they won't be able to be erased."
What kind of reputation...?
Su Er didn't want to think about it in detail.
A wave of exhaustion washed over her, and Su Er closed her eyes, slumping into the sofa. "I know, Sister Qin."
She knew that whether the news was unfounded or true, she had always been clear that her separation from Jiang Siyan was inevitable.
From the beginning, she never thought she could go this far with him, but as they spent more and more time together, she developed a desire for him.
Lin Shuqin couldn't bear to say anything more, so she patted her hand and left her space. "I won't say anything more, Xiao Er. Think about this carefully yourself."
The door was quietly closed, and the light and shadows cast into the room flickered, leaving no trace of the passage of time on the wooden floor.
In the early summer, Su Er felt a chill in her heart until the screen lit up again in the darkness and then went out again.
Su Er then slowly picked up her phone and dialed back, "Hello."
Jiang Siyan had just finished a meeting; the back-to-back meetings had made his voice sound a little hoarse. "Did you just fall asleep?"
"Um."
Su Er didn't share her usual funny stories with him, and the conversation fell silent.
"They always seem to be like this," she said, and he listened.
Su Er tried to raise her voice, attempting to sound happier, "Jiang Siyan, is there anything else you want to say to me?"
Jiang Siyan took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. For some reason, the silence just now made him feel a strange unease.
He asked, "What do you want to hear?"
Su Er's eyelashes trembled, and for a moment she could hardly suppress the sob in her throat. "No, hang up now, I still need to read the script."
"Er'er," he called to her.
Su Er paused, her hand still holding the phone. She responded softly, "What's wrong?"
He said, "I'll come see you when I have time."
"good."
After hanging up the phone that day, Su Er covered her face, and the tears she had been holding back for so long finally soaked her palms.
She cried for a long time, but that was all.
