Chapter 24: The Fake Heiress's Escape from Marriage - 24 Handkerchiefs
Two weeks later, Yun Chiyi and her group finally left the vacation villa.
Just as they arrived at Hongshan Garden, Gu Zhao heard the news and rushed over. He immediately grabbed Gu Chi by the collar and forcibly took him home.
Yun Chiyi quickly grabbed Gu Chi's hand: "Dad, what are you doing? Xiao Chi just got back and is a little tired. Why don't you let him rest first before talking about other things?"
Gu Zhao had grown a beard, or perhaps he wasn't in the mood to groom it. He glared fiercely at Gu Chi, trying to instill fear in him with his arrogance.
However, Gu Chi leaned against Yun Chiyi indifferently and glanced at Gu Zhao indifferently.
Over the past two weeks, Gu Zhao had considered that Yun Chiyi might corrupt Gu Chi, but he didn't expect the effect to come so quickly. Gu Chi, standing in front of him, was like a stranger.
"Gu Chi, I won't pursue what happened these past two weeks. Let's go home first."
Gu Chi said weakly, "I want to stay a little longer."
Gu Zhao roared in fury: "Gu Chi!"
"What's all the noise about!"
Yun Jingui's voice broke into the scene. She was originally delighted to hear that they had returned, but Gu Zhao ruined her good mood.
She walked in through the front door: "Gu Zhao, you rushed over in such a hurry, I would have thought Xiao Yi was going to sell your son."
Gu Zhao clenched his fist: "That's not what I meant."
Yun Jingui said coldly, "Since that's not what you mean, you should go back first. Gu Chi isn't a three- or five-year-old child; he has his own ideas."
Gu Chi echoed, "Mm."
Gu Zhao had always hoped that Gu Chi would have his own ideas, but when Gu Chi actually tried to express them, Gu Zhao started to panic.
With Yun Jingui present, he had to first appeal to her emotions: "I was just too hasty and didn't think things through."
Yun Jingui snorted coldly: "Afraid your precious son will get lost, huh?"
Yun Jingui's attitude was also bad today. Yun Chiyi watched silently from the side and guessed that something had happened.
Yun Jingui added, "I didn't see you panicking like this when Xiaoyi was lost."
Gu Zhao immediately broke out in a cold sweat and hurriedly explained, "Mom's words are a bit of a provocation to the relationship between me and Xiao Yi. Xiao Chi is still in school, and his teacher calls me every day to ask why he doesn't go to class. I'm angry because of him."
Yun Chiyi crossed her arms and gently nodded her chin: "But Xiao Chi has already contacted the teacher and said that she has been under too much pressure lately. She sees double when she sits in the classroom, so she needs to ask for leave to adjust her state."
She exclaimed in surprise, "Maybe the teacher was too busy and forgot to tell Dad about the situation."
As the last syllable of her voice rose, Yun Chiyi's expression turned cunning, her eye bags puffed out slightly, and her smiling eyes were truly unpleasant to look at.
Gu Zhao felt that something was separating them; he felt that Yun Chiyi on the other side had no blood relation to him.
He closed his eyes, and his reason gradually returned.
Indeed, Yun Chiyi has lived outside for so long that she has picked up some annoying habits.
When Gu Zhao opened his eyes again, his expression was serious: "Put Gu Chi's matter aside for now, there is another important thing I need to remind Xiao Yi about."
Yun Chiyi tilted her head, pointing her slender finger to the tip of her nose: "Me?"
They arrived at the flower stand where they often talked, and Yun Chiyi maintained a faint smile throughout.
Gu Zhao paced back and forth, looking extremely anxious: "I don't know if you've been watching the news these past few days?"
Yun Chiyi answered truthfully: "We're all in the mountains, there's almost no internet."
Gu Zhao lit a cigarette: "No wonder you could still sit still."
Yun Chiyi: "What is it, Dad? Don't scare me."
Every time she showed signs of panic, Gu Zhao felt a sense of confidence in regaining his home turf: "Just this month, the Gong family was investigated, which has brought up too many things. The Gong family's villa has been sealed off, and it seems like something was buried in the courtyard. The police and forensic doctors went there early this morning."
Yun Chiyi asked in surprise, "It's so serious, what could be the cause?"
Gu Zhao lit another cigarette: "You wouldn't understand even if I told you the reasons."
Yun Chiyi asked with concern, "How are Uncle Gong and Mu Feng doing? Mu Feng hasn't called me in a long time."
Gu Zhao choked on the smoke and quickly said, "Cough cough cough... It's best not to contact them, so as not to drag us into this. The Gong family can find a way to get through this crisis, but we should stay out of this mess for now."
He had heard gossip these past few days, saying that with the Gong family in such a big mess, the Yun family would probably be affected too, since the Yun family had always wanted to curry favor with the Gong family, and now they were only looked down upon.
Gu Zhao threw the cigarette at his feet and stubbed it out with his leather shoe.
"It was because of this incident that I realized Gong Mufeng was not a reliable person at all. You were right not to marry him in the first place."
Ugh, he's shameless!
The system's voice startled Yun Chiyi, and she slowly concealed her ambiguous smile: "What's wrong with him?"
Gu Zhao said, "Who knows what he's doing? We never see him. I heard he ran away from home after arguing with Gong Hanlu."
When the topic of running away from home came up, his thoughts suddenly turned to Gu Chi.
"Has Xiaochi caused you any trouble these past few days?"
Yun Chiyi smiled frankly: "How could that be? He's very sensible."
Gu Zhao said, "That's good. Don't take him to other places without my permission in the future."
She lowered her head in embarrassment: "It's all my fault for not thinking things through."
Gu Zhao felt that the sentence sounded familiar, but did not think about it further at the moment.
After reprimanding Yun Chiyi, he straightened his back again and strode away from Hongshan Garden.
Yun Chiyi stood in the garden. Many of the flowers on the flower stand had inexplicably withered. She reached out and picked one, then lightly tossed it into the trash can.
She stared at Gu Zhao's retreating figure and suddenly burst out laughing.
——
The next day, Wen Yanyan arrived at Hongshan Garden. It was only nine o'clock, and Yun Chiyi was still sleeping upstairs.
Bathed in the morning light, she slowly walked into the courtyard and saw Yun Jingui sitting under the flower trellis in the distance.
After hesitating for a moment, she walked over.
Hearing the rustling sound, Yun Jingui slowly raised her head. Wen Yanyan saw that she was holding a mahogany box, which was an old sewing box.
There was only a little bit of thread left in the sewing box of all colors. Yun Jingui was holding a slightly yellowed handkerchief in her hand. She was wearing reading glasses and was embroidering words on it stitch by stitch.
The handkerchief looked familiar, and Wen Yanyan's heart inexplicably quickened. She whispered, "Grandma, are you embroidering?"
Yun Jingui sighed, "Yes, Xiaoxiao's birthday is coming soon."
Yun Xiaoxiao is Yun Jingui's daughter. Wen Yanyan has seen her photos. She has very gentle eyebrows and eyes, and her eyes are soft and kind, which makes people feel very friendly.
Wen Yan Yan nodded quietly.
Yun Jingui added, "This handkerchief was a gift from Xiaoxiao. I've always kept it with me, but I lost it once. My granddaughter also lost it that time."
"Right now, all I want is for my family to live in harmony, and I want to give this handkerchief some kind of keepsake."
She unfolded the handkerchief, and Wen Yanyan could see its entirety. She was especially familiar with the corner that had been rubbed until it was only a thin layer, and the two birthday wishes on the side. She didn't need to count how many strokes were on it.
These are her things. She lost them when she went to the resort that time, and she couldn't find them no matter how hard she looked afterward.
Wen's parents said that she went missing when she was a child, and all she had was this handkerchief; there was no other information about her.
Wen Yanyan felt as if her heart was being gripped by a hand, and her vision was blurred with tears, making it impossible for her to see Yun Jingui's face clearly.
She hoped she was wrong.
Upstairs, Yun Chiyi, dressed in her pajamas, stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window and saw Wen Yanyan from the moment she entered until now.
[Damn it, it seems Wen Yanyan knows the truth.]
The truth will out eventually; she'll find out sooner or later, and it might be better to find out sooner rather than later.
In the five minutes that followed, Yun Chiyi hadn't changed her clothes. Wen Yanyan stormed upstairs and saw Yun Chiyi, whose expression was indifferent. When she spoke, her voice was especially hoarse.
"Yun Chiyi, I want to ask you, what were the two lines of poetry on the handkerchief you carried with you on the day your grandmother found you?"
Yun Chiyi thought for a moment and then said, "The full moon reflects the snow-covered pine... I can't remember the next line."
Wen Yanyan's tears streamed down her face: "You can't remember because it wasn't even yours to begin with."
Her voice was a little softer: "Yun Chiyi, you are not a daughter of the Yun family at all, you big liar."
Yun Chiyi admitted, "Yes, I am not. You are the Yun family's daughter."
Wen Yan Yan completely broke down, wiping away her tears as she pushed her into the house. Yun Chi Yi lost her balance, and Wen Yan Yan, overwhelmed by her emotions, placed her wet hand on her shoulder.
If she doesn't change direction, she's guaranteed to slap Yun Chiyi in the face.
After the crisp sound, Yun Chiyi's shoulders turned red.
Wen Yanyan's hands trembled uncontrollably. She was terrified. The handprint was reflected on Yun Chiyi's shoulder, which showed how much force she had used.
"Why did you lie to everyone?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Yun Chiyi: "It's hard to explain. Now that you know the truth, I'll leave here today."
Wen Yan Yan was so angry she could hardly breathe; she regretted hitting Yun Chi Yi earlier.
"Why should you do this? You just do it and walk away? That would be too easy on you."
Yun Chiyi didn't speak; explaining these complicated things would take too long.
Wen Yan Yan asked her again, "I'll ask you again, when did you find out about me..."
She couldn't continue. Her unclear identity had suddenly been assigned to someone, and she felt a sense of fear.
Yun Chiyi answered truthfully: "I knew from the beginning. The first time I met you was at the resort."
That's how things should be. After thinking it over, Wen Yanyan realized that she must have taken the handkerchief from the hospital near the resort.
Wen Yanyan then said firmly, "Lin Jishen is an accomplice."
Yun Chiyi immediately shook her head: "No, that's not how it is."
Hearing this, Wen Yanyan felt angry. How could she speak up for him?
Yun Chiyi continued, "You've really misunderstood. He's the mastermind. He was the one who came up with the plans from the beginning."
Wen Yan Yan remained silent for a long time.
There was a knock at the door; it was Yun Jingui coming up.
"Yan Yan, Xiao Yi, would you like to come down for breakfast?"
Yun Chiyi remained calm and spoke in a low voice: "Whether you want to tell everyone now or not, the decision is in your hands."
Wen Yan Yan's mind was in a mess, and she took a step back as if to avoid the question: "I have something to ask you, don't rush to say it."
Yun Chiyi said, "Don't cry. I can tell you anything you want to know, as long as it's something I can tell you."
Wen Yanyan glared at her angrily, wiped away her tears, and went out the door.
After a terrifying ordeal, Yun Chiyi began to change her clothes.
[Alas, the bet was won! Things will be much easier once the female lead calms down.]
The system cheered.
[Did that slap hurt, host?]
[Ouch, it hurts so much! Can you please contact headquarters and get something nice to comfort me?]
[Don't worry, host, I've got your back!]
"Isn't the system easy to fool too?" Yun Chiyi smiled, changed into comfortable clothes, and went downstairs to eat.
