Go to Beiping

Go to Beiping

For three consecutive days, Xu Tangmian stayed in her old school dormitory and did not go home.

She was very happy during the time she spent with Yu Chunsheng, or rather, Kong Lin, and she thought that her personality had changed a lot compared to before.

But during the few days she spent alone, she realized that she hadn't changed; she was still the same self-righteous Xu Tongtong.

Perhaps for an ordinary person, the fact that her husband is a reincarnated person would sound terrifying and hard to accept, but because she is not from this era, she didn't react much to it.

What she truly couldn't accept was the fact that Kong Lin had been her grandfather's close friend.

Although her current identity is Xu Tangmian and not Xu Tongtong, the fact that Xu Zhilian is her grandfather in her heart cannot be changed.

The matter at the funeral was still unclear; she had come to this era specifically for that reason. If it weren't for the obstacles posed by the letter of introduction and her later falling in love with Yu Chunsheng, she would still have been determined to go to Beiping to find her grandfather.

If Yu Chunsheng were just an ordinary person, then even if he were born in 1846, Xu Tangmian would accept it.

But why is he Xu Zhilian's friend?

Xu Tangmian spent three days getting the letter of introduction ready and buying the train tickets.

This time, she's determined to get to the bottom of this!

She wrote a letter and entrusted Li Yutao to deliver it to Yu Chunsheng. As instructed, by the time the letter reached Yu Chunsheng, she had already boarded a green train bound for Beiping.

Because of Yu Chunsheng's unexpected turn of events, Li Youlan and his wife, who were originally scheduled to return to Beiping, also postponed their plans.

Through Li Yutao, they learned that the couple had a conflict, and Xu Tangmian had not returned home for three days since that day.

Regardless of whether Yu Chunsheng was Kong Lin or not, Li Youlan felt that she had disrupted the couple's normal life, and both morally and logically, she should go to their home to apologize.

Song Weidong's legs have basically recovered, and at Li Youlan's request, he took the couple to Yu Chunsheng's home.

When they arrived at the door, they saw Li Yutao instead.

Song Weidong stepped forward and said, "Xiao Tao, what are you doing here?"

Li Yutao quickly shook the letter, "Don't misunderstand, Sister Tangtang asked me to give this letter to him."

Where are the others?

"I don't know. I've been knocking on the door for ages and no one's answering. The door isn't locked either."

Song Weidong knocked on the door twice more, "Yu Chunsheng! Come out!"

Still no response.

Li Youlan asked with a worried expression, "Could something have happened?"

Song Weidong nodded. "That won't do." He pounded on the door twice. "Yu Chunsheng, we're going to kick the door down! If you're behind the door, get out of there!"

There was still no response.

Song Weidong and his uncle exchanged a glance, and the latter took two steps back and kicked him hard.

The wooden door slammed open, and the group rushed inside, only to find Yu Chunsheng slumped on the floor with his back against the wardrobe, his face covered in stubble.

Li Yutao was the first to walk to the window, pull back the curtains, and frown at him with a look of disgust: "What are you doing? Who are you trying to impress by humiliating yourself like this?"

"Xiao Tao!" Song Weidong quickly stopped her.

Yu Chunsheng slowly lifted his eyelids. His once bright and piercing eyes, now bloodshot, swept over the group of people before finally settling on Li Youlan. He said weakly, "My wife ran away. She's disgusted with me."

"Any woman would dislike you looking like this!" Li Yutao said indignantly. "Are you still the Brother Yu I know? Cheer up and go find her!"

"Xiao Tao, don't say anything yet..." Song Weidong shoved a few times, stepped forward, and squatted down in front of Yu Chunsheng: "Chunsheng, we didn't mean it. Let's go to school and pick up Xiao Xu first, then we'll explain to her slowly, okay?"

“Yes…” Li Youlan knelt down in front of Yu Chunsheng with a guilty expression and said, “You really resemble my ex-wife so much that we talked a bit too much. If Xiao Xu misunderstood you, I’ll explain to her. She’s a kind and understanding girl, I think she can…”

“Youlan,” Yu Chunsheng suddenly spoke.

"What?" Li Youlan looked bewildered, as if she couldn't believe what she had heard.

"Didn't I tell you to be bold in everything you do? Why have I never seen you treat me this well before?"

What is he doing...?

Li Youlan was stunned at first, as if struck by lightning, and blankly called out, "Alin?" After receiving his nod of confirmation, she could no longer hold back and threw herself into Yu Chunsheng's arms, crying and shouting.

The sight of a middle-aged woman in her forties collapsing in the arms of a young man in his twenties was quite shocking. Song Weidong, seeing Li Yutao's wide-eyed expression, fearing she might utter some shocking words, quickly dragged and carried her out, then propped the door back in its original position.

Li Yutao exclaimed, "Don't think I won't kick you just because your legs are healed! Let me go!"

Song Weidong covered her mouth and said, "Don't talk, can you listen to me? Don't you want to know what's going on inside?"

Li Yutao blinked her eyelashes and finally calmed down.

Song Weidong recounted the past of the group in detail, and sure enough, Li Yutao frowned and complained, "Resurrected from the dead? Are you trying to fool a three-year-old?"

Song Weidong's feelings were also complicated, but apart from being brought back from the dead, there was no other way to explain the current situation.

His gaze returned to the door, wondering what was going on inside. This was just too absurd...

Seeing that he was silent, Li Yutao calmed down again, took his hand and said, "Maybe I don't know much about your past with him. I just find it a bit unbelievable from an outsider's perspective."

“I understand.” Song Weidong held her hand tightly. “I don’t know much about him either. I think only people who have actually met him and know him well can know whether what he says is true or false.”

As soon as he finished speaking, a low murmur from a man drifted out of the room.

The two listened intently against the wall for a while before Li Yutao stood up and whispered, "Can you understand it?"

Song Weidong squinted, "I can understand it, but I can't sing it."

Li Yutao laughed and patted him on the face, "Didn't you study hard? You're so much older than others, but you don't know as much as they do."

"I studied medicine later, okay?" Song Weidong pinched back lightly in anger. "Besides, I learned Russian when I was in elementary school. Who would remember it if I didn't use it anymore?"

"Wow, you guys learned Russian when you were kids?" Li Yutao chuckled. "You old man, you won't admit it. We all learned English when we were kids."

Song Weidong rolled his eyes and didn't reply to her.

"Are they exchanging secret signals inside?" Li Yutao leaned closer, scratching her head and saying, "I'm so anxious! What are they saying? I should have told Dad I wanted to learn Russian."

"Oh, they're just singing Soviet folk songs. I'll sing one for you."

Li Yutao clasped her hands together, waiting expectantly for him to start singing.

Song Weidong licked his lips and said with a mischievous grin, "In the fields and by the river, red berries are blooming..."

"Go to hell!" Li Yutao was so angry that she wanted to kick him. "I want to hear Russian, who wants to hear your Mandarin?"

Song Weidong deftly dodged her, but then saw an envelope shaken out of her bag. He asked, "What's that?"

"Oh dear, I forgot!" Li Yutao picked up the envelope. "This is what Sister Mianmian asked me to give to Brother Yu. It seems she has already bought a train ticket to Beiping."

"What!" Song Weidong exclaimed urgently, "Why are you only telling me now about something so important?"

"Then I'll just forget about you as soon as I see you," Li Yutao said, sounding a little aggrieved.

"Alright, alright, I'm not blaming you." With that, Song Weidong pulled her and knocked on the door. He was about to speak, but then he remembered that he didn't know what was going on inside, and he wasn't sure if Yu Chunsheng was Brother Kong. So he choked on his words and didn't know how to start the conversation.

Li Yutao knew exactly what he was thinking and spoke up for him, saying, "Brother Yu, I have a letter here that Sister Tangtang asked me to give to you. She has already gone to Beiping."

Almost as soon as he finished speaking, several people rushed out of the room.

Yu Chunsheng asked anxiously, "What did you say?"

Li Yutao then repeated what she had said.

After listening, Yu Chunsheng pursed his lips and remained silent, then turned around and began rummaging through the wardrobe for clothes.

Li Youlan's eyes were red as she helped him pack his luggage, and asked him, "Xiao Lin, you don't have a letter of introduction, how are you going to Beiping?"

Yu Chunsheng paused for a moment, then said, "You're right, I haven't gotten the letter of introduction yet."

Song Weidong stepped forward and took the initiative to say, "I have a good relationship with the village chief. I'll go find him now to get you a letter of introduction."

He then pulled Li Yutao along and started walking outside.

Liu Xingyao then asked him, "Is the money enough? Did Xiao Xu take all the money from home?"

Yu Chunsheng looked up at him and said with a smile, "Brother Xingyao, you really helped me."

"Not at all," Liu Xingyao said, taking out his wallet from his pocket, pulling out a few bills, and handing them to him. "Is this enough? There's more if you need more."

Yu Chunsheng looked at the few hundred yuan in his hand and nodded, "That's enough."

Li Youlan, however, was somewhat worried: "Shall we go back with you? Many of our old classmates are still in Beiping. If they see your face, they'll definitely have some ideas."

Yu Chunsheng chuckled and said, "No need. I heard from Tangtang that Xiaotao's parents are coming to see her. You should focus on preparing for Weidong's matter."

He paused for a moment and then said, "Besides... the best protection for me is for you not to be with me."

Li Youlan was taken aback and silently lowered her head.

Liu Xingyao noticed his wife's dejection, so he took Yu Chunsheng outside and whispered, "Xiao Lin, you have urgent business to attend to right now, so we can't disturb you. When you come back, we must have a proper get-together."

Yu Chunsheng nodded and hesitated, "I...I heard that you took my mother in to take care of her before. Is she alright now?"

Liu Xingyao's face darkened. "Your aunt passed away the year before last."

Yu Chunsheng was silent for a moment before asking, "Where is she buried?"

“A few years ago, we visited several old classmates before they finally agreed to move your ashes from the farm back to Beiping, right next to your father. Youlan and I discussed it and decided to bury your uncle and aunt together.”

"Okay, I'll go take a look later." Yu Chunsheng patted his old friend on the shoulder. "Thanks."

——

The train chugged along, and as Yu Chunsheng watched the wild geese flash by outside the window, he felt a pang of homesickness.

He took out the envelope that Li Yutao had given him from his bag, but hesitated and dared not open it.

After a bumpy journey of more than ten hours, he resisted the urge to open the letter. He roughly knew what hurtful words it contained, so he decided to wait until he found Xu Tangmian and burn the letter in front of her.

That way, they could be considered to have never had any grudges against each other.

But as he got closer to Beiping, he realized that he had only thought about how to win her back, and had never thought about how to actually do it.

He remembered that when they first met, Xu Tangmian kept saying that she wanted to go back to Beiping to find her relatives, but she never mentioned it again. Now she must be disappointed in him and that's why she wants to go back.

Perhaps he should read this letter, even if it hurts him, just to hear her thoughts.

How can a wound heal if you cover it up?

Yu Chunsheng carefully tore open the edge of the envelope and took out the letter. He only glanced at it before feeling a chill run down his spine.
