It's a complete mess.
The ward door suddenly swung open, revealing Liu Yufen's aloof and dignified face. Song Weidong's lips curled into a smile as he retreated down the corridor, concealing his accomplishment.
Liu Yufen, dressed in a white fur coat, stood quietly at the door, looking indifferently at her husband who was swaggering around inside the ward.
A few days ago, she received a phone call from here, claiming that her husband, Xu Zhilian, was bullying people here and that she should come over immediately to stop him or he would make an even bigger mistake.
She had been with Xu Zhilian for twenty years, and she knew his character very well. Xu Zhilian had always treated her extremely well; after marrying him, she had never cooked a single meal, nor had she ever touched a single household chore.
She wanted to study, so he contacted schools for her and personally tutored her; she wanted a career, so he personally used his connections to get her a teaching job. To be fair, Xu Zhilian did nothing to wrong her.
She trusted her husband, so she initially refused the call. But when the woman on the phone said that Xu Zhilian was in Huaifeng Town, she started to panic.
That was a place she didn't want to mention, her hometown she hadn't returned to for many years. More than twenty years ago, her cowardice caused the death of an innocent person. It was Xu Zhilian who took her away from home, which led to her happy life today.
Why did Xu Zhilian carry her back there? Is there some hidden story behind this?
Liu Yufen subconsciously felt that Xu Zhilian was trying to make amends for her mistakes back then, after all, she had gone too far. Such a good person died unjustly, and his family and friends must all want to seek justice for him.
Recently, many old cases have been overturned, and I heard that his friends have been working hard for him. Liu Yufen secretly retrieved some of Xu Zhilian's letters and found that he had been in close contact with a man named "Liu Peng" from Huaifeng Town last year.
Could Liu Peng be involved in that incident from back then? Liu Yufen initially didn't want to interfere in Xu Zhilian's affairs, just like before. She knew that Xu Zhilian had asked many people for help to get her out of Meixiang Village back then, so she had turned a blind eye to some of his work-related issues over the years.
But then she thought again, since the surname was Liu and the village was Meixiang Village in Huaifeng Town, it was very likely that he was a relative from her hometown.
Before they knew it, they had passed the age of forty, and in a few more years they would be retired seniors, "knowing their destiny." Perhaps it was because of her age, but lately she had been thinking that she should do more good deeds and accumulate more merit for herself.
After learning about Liu Peng's situation, she also wanted to have someone investigate him. Wu Siping would theoretically be the most suitable, as he had all sorts of connections. However, he was Xu Zhilian's former subordinate, and if he found out, Xu Zhilian would definitely find out as well, which was not what Liu Yufen wanted.
Therefore, she found some reliable old friends at school.
Professor Fang was known as a kind person at the school, and her husband was also a prominent figure in Beiping's political circles. When Liu Yufen found Professor Fang, they happened to be having dinner at home.
She knew that Professor Fang and his wife had a son and a daughter, who were twins, but when she arrived at their home and saw a young man in his twenties and a little girl in her teens, she was a little confused.
She wouldn't visit the temple without a reason, and when the other party realized she had something to ask, they sent the two children away.
As she mentioned the name "Liu Peng," a vase in the hallway suddenly shattered, followed by a young man's voice, "Zhi, come here!"
Liu Yufen was even more bewildered.
Upon opening the door and finding that their son had already taken the girl away, Professor Fang and his wife sighed and began to recount the story of Liu Peng and the little girl.
As fate would have it, the little girl turned out to be Liu Peng's stepdaughter!
Liu Yufen trembled with anger, partly because of the little girl's painful experience and her heartache at encountering such a scoundrel; and partly because Xu Zhilian was in contact with such a person and even secretly supported him.
Perhaps because her face looked too frightening, Professor Fang comforted her, "Don't be too angry. Director Xu was probably deceived. Didn't he eventually realize the truth? Liu Peng was able to be sentenced so quickly because he was directing things behind the scenes."
Liu Yufen asked in surprise, "Wasn't this something you handled?"
Professor Fang smiled slightly, "Qingmang did angrily mention that he wanted to be severely punished, but before Old Li could even make the call and say anything, he heard from the other party that Director Xu had already given instructions."
"The people over there are still wondering who this Liu Peng is, that he could get Old Li and Director Xu to both get involved."
Liu Yufen lowered her head guiltily and said, "He is a distant relative from my hometown. Zhilian must have been deceived by him."
Being deceived was, of course, her excuse. To find out what Xu Zhilian was doing in Huaifeng Town, she dialed the woman's number again.
The person who answered the phone identified himself as being from Hongxing Elementary School. He said that something had happened at the woman's home and that she should be at the city hospital taking care of her husband. So she went to the city hospital, and this time a doctor surnamed Song answered the phone.
Dr. Song seemed to be a friend of the woman. He briefly explained the current situation to her, and she immediately bought a train ticket and went straight to the hospital.
She met the woman who had called her; she was a young woman in her early twenties who looked somewhat like her when she was young, and she liked her very much at first sight.
Hearing that the woman's husband was ill, and since Xu Zhilian's matter wasn't urgent, she decided to go with her to visit him in the ward. Unexpectedly, she heard her husband's voice when they arrived at the door.
She had spent so many days and nights with Xu Zhilian that she could recognize his voice, but she had never heard his tone so... nauseating.
He actually made people kneel before him and showed no sympathy for a child who died trying to save him! Liu Yufen's body trembled uncontrollably; she couldn't believe that the person inside was Xu Zhilian.
Before Liu Yufen could figure out what was going on inside, the young girl beside her was already so angry that she put her hand on the doorknob and was about to rush in, but was stopped by Dr. Song.
With a "bang," someone must have knelt down.
Liu Yufen peered through the glass window at the door and saw Xu Zhilian sitting smugly on the hospital bed, with a man kneeling in front of him.
Xu Zhilian spoke again, "I also want you to wipe the drool off my shoes and respectfully tell me that you were wrong, and that neither Kong Lin nor Yu Chunsheng are as good as half a finger of Xu Zhilian!"
The Confucius Cemetery! What does this have to do with the Confucius Cemetery? Hasn't he been dead for over twenty years?
One shocking piece of news after another left Liu Yufen unable to process it all. Before she could figure it out, the girl beside her suddenly rushed inside.
Liu Yufen wanted to go in with her, but for some reason, her feet seemed to be rooted to the spot, and she couldn't take a step.
Xu Zhilian was still arrogantly berating the young couple, but Liu Yufen's mind was a complete mess; she couldn't hear a word he was saying. It wasn't until a certain moment that she suddenly snapped out of it and stepped forward.
Upon seeing her, Xu Zhilian's smug face suddenly turned ashen with fright, and he hurriedly tried to pull her away.
Liu Yufen had had enough of his two-faced attitude and impatiently turned to look at the young couple. The woman was still squatting on the ground, and the man was coaxing her gently.
Liu Yufen stepped forward to apologize to them, but Xu Zhilian suddenly knelt down in front of her, pleading in terror, "Don't go! Yufen, I beg you, please don't go!"
"What's wrong with you!" Liu Yufen shoved him away. "How many terrible things have you done? Don't you even have a little bit of remorse?"
Ignoring Xu Zhilian's pleas, she walked straight to the young couple beside the hospital bed. The woman gradually recovered, still softly sobbing as she cupped the man's face in her hands.
Seeing that the woman was alright, Liu Yufen felt a little better. At the same time, the man turned to look at her.
"Kong Lin!" Liu Yufen's smile vanished abruptly. Her eyes widened in horror as she staggered back several steps, collapsing to the ground and crashing heavily into the wall.
"Yu Fen!" Xu Zhilian hadn't even gotten up yet when he crawled over to help her up.
Yu Chunsheng was already very familiar with this kind of scene. With his swollen face from the slap, he smiled and waved to her, "Long time no see, Comrade Yufen."
"Are you a human or a ghost? Are you a human or a ghost!" Liu Yufen screamed in terror.
The ward door was wide open, and the commotion quickly attracted the attention of medical staff, patients, and their families outside.
Song Weidong quickly stepped forward and closed the door. After shooing away the patients who had come to watch the commotion, he shook his head at the medical staff who came to check on the situation. "There's nothing wrong inside. Let them handle it themselves. Don't let anyone else come over."
The doctor was still worried, saying, "Something's not right in the noise I'm hearing."
Song Weidong then seriously threatened him, "Any one of the people inside would have to bow and scrape to the dean if he came out. I advise you not to meddle in other people's business. The more you know, the more dangerous your career will be."
The doctor knew that Song Weidong had been personally appointed by higher-ups, so he believed his words without a doubt. After listening, he quickly slipped away and left.
After everyone else had left, Song Weidong bent over and peered out the doorway, watching the commotion with a gossipy expression.
He was so engrossed in watching that he didn't even notice someone quietly approaching him from behind.
Li Yutao slapped him on the back of the head, startling him so much that he jumped up. But fearing that the people inside would notice, he could only whisper a "shh."
"Why did you bring the child here? There are so many germs in the hospital." Song Weidong frowned.
“My child cried a lot at home, and even though I fed him milk, he didn’t poop. I had no other choice but to bring him here.”
Song Weidong looked at Xu Qiushi, who was wide-eyed and grinning in the swaddling clothes, and asked in confusion, "Isn't he perfectly fine?"
“Yes!” Li Yutao was also puzzled. “She’s so noisy at home, but she stops crying as soon as she goes upstairs. I guess she misses her mother, so she just hugs her.”
As Li Yutao spoke, she tried to rush into the ward, "What's wrong with Sister Tangtang? She's been here for so long and hasn't gone back yet."
"Don't go!" Song Weidong stopped her again and gave her a wink. "There's a world war going on inside. Mortals should step aside."
Li Yutao glanced inside and saw that besides Xu Tangmian and his wife, there was also a middle-aged couple. Her imagination immediately ran wild. "Could it be that Tangtang's biological parents have come to settle scores with Brother Yu, accusing him of trafficking women?"
“It’s much more serious than that.” Song Weidong nodded seriously. “Your sister Tangtang’s grandparents have come looking for us.”
"Grandpa, Grandma..." Li Yutao was completely bewildered. The next moment, she suddenly remembered the explosive news her aunt and uncle had told her before leaving, and she was so shocked she almost dropped her baby, turning her head sharply towards the ward, her mouth agape:
"His enemy?!"
