Chapter 40: Xiliang Envoy

So much so that in front of Rong Chengxuan, he still looked depressed.

Rong Chengxuan reached out and poked Yun Wanwan's angry face, a look of hurt on his face. "Have I become so unpopular? Even my fiancée looks sullen when she sees me."

Yun Wanwan reached out and grasped Rong Chengxuan's hand, the one that had committed the crime. She shook her head and said, "No, it's just that I've encountered too many unhappy things today."

"Then how about I cheer you up?" Rong Chengxuan leaned closer to Yun Wanwan, looking down at her. "I'll take you to the palace banquet. The envoys from Xiliang are coming to the capital today. I heard they're offering a lot of interesting and rare things. I'll take you to see them."

Yun Wanwan's attention was also drawn to Rong Chengxuan's words. Interesting and unique things? Before she traveled through time, she had seen TV dramas depicting tributes to the emperor as meticulously selected exquisite treasures. She had never imagined that she would one day be able to see those treasures with her own eyes.

However, Yun Wanwan quickly thought of a very realistic problem: what identity should she use to attend this palace banquet.

Her current identity is really embarrassing. On the surface, she is the legitimate eldest daughter of the Yun family, but secretly, she has already moved out of the Yun family a long time ago and no longer lives with the original owner's two adoptive parents.

If she attended the palace banquet as Princess An, she and Rong Chengxuan had not yet married, but only had an engagement. If she now regarded herself as Princess An, it would be a bit too hasty.

Rong Chengxuan saw what Yun Wanwan was thinking and ruffled her hair. "You can attend the palace banquet with me as the Princess of the Nation."

Rong Chengxuan's reminder reminded Yun Wanwan that she still held the title of Princess of the Nation, a title bestowed upon her by Ji Moyi. She possessed only the title of Princess, nothing else. However, this wasn't the answer she had hoped to hear from Rong Chengxuan.

What she clearly wanted to hear from Rong Chengxuan was...

Ever since Rong Chengxuan discussed with Yun Wanwan what identity Yun Wanwan should use to accompany him to the palace banquet, Yun Wanwan became even more listless than when she first entered the palace, and she was in a state of lack of energy the whole time.

When they sat down at the banquet table in the evening, Yun Wanwan put on a proper expression and sat next to Rong Chengxuan, waiting for the envoy to enter the hall.

Shortly after he sat down, he heard a eunuch beside him raise his head and shout at the top of his voice: "Send—Xiliang envoy Tuoba Gong to the audience!"

Following the eunuch's shout, the Xiliang envoy, Tuoba Gong, the third prince of Xiliang, entered the hall with five attendants.

In Yun Wanwan's opinion, Tuoba Gong was about 1.85 meters tall and very strong. As soon as he entered the hall, he was like a moving mountain, blocking out a lot of the light in front of Yun Wanwan.

The clothing of the people of Xiliang was not similar to theirs, and even looked a bit like the Yuan Dynasty in official history. This reminded Yun Wanwan of the time when she was studying history, and she felt a little nostalgic.

As she was observing him, Tuoba Gong had already walked to the ceremonial seat at the center of the hall. He lifted his robe, knelt on one knee, and performed the formal ceremony of an envoy: "I, Tuoba Gong, the son of your country, pay my respects to the Emperor. May Your Majesty live long, and may our friendly country prosper and enjoy good weather."

As everyone waited for Ji Moyi to tell the envoy to stand up, Ji Moyi suddenly pointed in the direction of Rong Chengxuan. Whether intentionally or not, he said, "Prince Tuoba should salute Prince An, not me."

As soon as Zimmer said this, the hall suddenly became quiet. Even the sound of a pin drop could be heard. Everyone's eyes were drawn to Rong Chengxuan by Zimmer.

Tuoba Gong was also a smart man. Before coming to the Central Plains, he had sent people to investigate. Naturally, he knew that the court was now ruled by Prince An, Rong Chengxuan, but he didn't know whether it was true or false.

As soon as Ji Moyi made this move, he immediately understood. He changed the direction of his kneeling body and bowed to Rong Chengxuan. He said the same blessing as before, "The son of our country, Tuoba Gong, pays homage to His Royal Highness Prince An. May His Royal Highness live long and may our friendly country prosper and have good weather."

This blessing is normal for Ji Moyi, but it would be abnormal if it was said to someone else, from Ji Moyi to Rong Chengxuan.

If Rong Chengxuan fails to handle the situation well, it will leave a bad impression on the ministers in the court.

Rong Chengxuan suddenly burst into laughter and said cheerfully, "Your Majesty, I thank you for your kindness. And the Third Prince of Xiliang is becoming more and more eloquent! The ground is cold, please get up quickly, Your Majesty!"

Rong Chengxuan easily resolved the awkwardness in the hall with just a few words and shifted everyone's attention back to Ji Moyi and Tuoba Gong.

He also clearly told the ministers present that it was because Ji Moyi favored him that Ji Moyi asked the Xiliang envoy to pay his respects to him, and it was not because of any evil ambition.

"Thank you, Your Majesty! Thank you, Prince An!" Tuoba Gong finally stood up. Just as he stood up, he heard the envoy standing behind him whisper a few words in his ear. Then he bowed again and said, "Your Majesty, Prince An, I have something to report."

Ji Mo glanced at Rong Chengxuan and found that his expression was still normal. He had no intention of stopping the envoy from speaking, so he said, "Third Prince, please speak."

Tuoba Gong pondered for a moment how to phrase what he was about to say in the Central Plains dialect, then said, "When our envoys first arrived in Beijing, they were suddenly targeted on the street by a Central Plains woman. She not only insulted them but also physically attacked them. And right now, that woman is sitting in the main hall."

Tuoba Gong paused, speaking to Ji Moyi, but looking up at Rong Chengxuan, "Emperor of the Central Plains, I feel this matter is extremely abominable and has seriously affected the friendship between our two countries. Your Majesty, please hand over the woman who treated our envoy in this way to us."

Ji Moyi glanced at Rong Chengxuan again, and seeing that his expression remained unchanged, he continued, "I wonder which woman here the prince is talking about. If she really did this, we will definitely not let her off easily."

Tuoba Gong pointed directly at Yun Wanwan behind Rong Chengxuan and said, "That's the woman sitting behind His Highness Prince An."

The hall suddenly became quiet again.
