Chapter 2 Rebirth
The north courtyard of the Marquis of Yi'an's residence.
In the ornately decorated room, a faint scent of sandalwood lingered. On the mahogany carved canopy bed, Gu Shuyan lay quietly as if fast asleep.
Beside the bed, a woman was wiping away tears with a handkerchief, sobbing, "How could this happen? How could we have run into bandits?"
Her words, which sounded like a question yet also like talking to herself, made everyone present lower their heads, because their mistress had repeated the same words many times.
Only the old woman standing beside the woman heard this and patiently stepped forward to comfort her, saying, "Madam, the young lady is blessed by heaven and will surely be safe and sound."
"But we've already slept for three days straight, if we keep sleeping like this..."
As the woman spoke, the tears she had just stopped flowing again, and the old woman could only offer her comfort once more.
At that moment, no one noticed that Gu Shuyan, who was lying on the bed, moved her fingers.
The woman's sobs grew clearer and clearer beside her, and Gu Shuyan couldn't help but frown. A moment later, Gu Shuyan suddenly opened her eyes, but her eyes, filled with hatred, seemed to be haunted by a demon, sending chills down one's spine.
After glancing around, Gu Shuyan's gaze finally settled on the woman wiping away tears by the bedside.
"Mother..."
As soon as Gu Shuyan saw Ji Shi, her eyes involuntarily reddened, and she buried her face in Ji Shi's arms, sobbing as if she wanted to cry out all the grievances she had suffered over the years.
Ji was clearly startled by Gu Shuyan's sudden action, but seeing that her daughter, who had been unconscious for several days, had finally woken up, Ji finally felt relieved.
"Mother, I was wrong, I know I was wrong."
Exhausted from crying, Gu Shuyan wiped away her tears and slowly looked at Madam Ji. People say that after death one can see their loved ones, and it seemed this was indeed true; she had indeed seen them.
But why did this scene seem so familiar to her?
Before she could figure out where this feeling came from, she saw Madam Ji holding a handkerchief and choking back tears, saying, "This is not Yingxue's fault. It's all because I didn't think things through and didn't send more people to protect you."
It wasn't Yingxue's fault?
The scenes from her life seemed to be right before her eyes: the tragic deaths of hundreds of people in the Hou family, Rui'er covered in blood—all of these things caused Gu Shuyan's heart to ache. But her mother said it wasn't Gu Yingxue's fault.
If it weren't for Gu Yingxue's heartless betrayal and collusion with Lu Youming to frame them, their whole family wouldn't have ended up in such a miserable state.
"mother……"
Hatred and resentment welled up in her heart, and Gu Shuyan's face unconsciously darkened.
Just as she was about to accuse him, she heard Madam Ji continue to sob, "It's all my fault that Yingxue has suffered so much all these years. If I had been more careful back then, I wouldn't have given you the wrong baby. Now that I've finally found you, it's because I didn't go to pick you up myself that you were attacked by bandits on your way back."
Ji Shi cried with snot and tears streaming down her face, even more heartbroken than Gu Shuyan had been just moments before.
Gu Shuyan, standing to the side, was already stunned by her words and stood frozen in place.
If she remembered correctly, she had encountered bandits when she first returned to the Marquis's residence, and was injured as a result. She was unconscious at home for several days before waking up.
And her mother sat by her bedside, blaming herself with tears streaming down her face. Only then, because she didn't have a name belonging to the Gu family, would her mother call her Yingxue.
Now that the same scene is playing out again, Gu Shuyan can't help but have a bold idea—she has been reborn.
