Chapter 522 Brothers
After Gu Jin finished speaking, he turned and left the North Courtyard, heading straight for the Yun Residence.
Gu Renjie overheard their conversation outside the door and guessed that Yun Yichen might know the inside story, so he strode over to the Yun residence.
Yun Yichen originally thought that he would have a good talk with Gu Shuyan after she calmed down, but instead of hearing that Gu Shuyan had calmed down, he heard that she had fallen ill.
So, after hesitating for a while, Yun Yichen, who had just decided to go and visit, bumped right into Gu Renjie in front of the Yun residence.
"Renjie, Shushu, is she alright?!" Before he could finish those three words, he was punched squarely in the face.
"Tell me, what exactly did you do to Shu'er?"
The usually aloof Gu Renjie was like a powder keg that had been lit today, and he immediately launched an attack upon seeing Yun Yichen.
Seeing his agitation, Yun Yichen not only didn't hold it against him for hitting him, but became even more anxious, grabbing Gu Renjie's arm and asking anxiously, "What's wrong with Shushu? What happened?"
Yun Yichen knew how much Gu Renjie valued his younger sister Gu Shuyan. Even he, who was not easily angered, was so furious. Yun Yichen dared not think about Gu Shuyan's current situation.
Faced with Yun Yichen's question, Gu Renjie simply stared at him, showing no intention of telling him anything.
Seeing this, Yun Yichen became even more anxious.
He could remain calm about anything else, but he couldn't remain calm about Gu Shuyan's matter.
Sensing something was wrong, Yun Yichen stopped asking Gu Renjie and headed towards the Marquis's residence. But he'd only taken two steps when Gu Renjie pulled him back.
Immediately afterwards, another fist struck Yun Yichen's face, nearly knocking half of his mask off.
As soon as Gu Jin stepped out of the Marquis's mansion, he saw his son pinning Yun Yichen down. He was immediately startled and hurriedly went forward to pull the two apart.
"Renjie, what are you doing?" Gu Jin shouted.
Gu Renjie stopped what he was doing and looked at Yun Yichen, saying each word clearly, "Teach him a lesson for Shu'er."
Seeing this, Gu Jin shook his head helplessly. Since it was inconvenient to speak here, he had no choice but to have someone help Yun Yichen and pull Gu Renjie into the Yun residence.
"Father-in-law, what's wrong with Shushu?"
As soon as Yun Yichen stepped inside, he immediately inquired about Gu Shuyan's condition.
Gu Renjie stood aside, watching Yun Yichen's worried expression, not even bothering to glance at him.
Seeing this, Gu Jin glared at Gu Renjie before turning to Yun Yichen with some difficulty: "This is not good. The doctor said that Shu'er is depressed. If this continues, I'm afraid her life will be in danger."
"How could that be? Shushu has always been outgoing and lively, how could she be holding something in her heart!"
When Yun Yichen heard Gu Jin's words, he first breathed a sigh of relief, but when he heard that his life was in danger, his heart jumped into his throat.
"Then you should ask yourself what you did to Shu'er."
Gu Renjie was convinced that Gu Shuyan's inner conflict stemmed from Yun Yichen, so he saw Yun Yichen as an enemy no matter how he looked at him.
Gu Jin rarely saw Gu Renjie target someone like this. Although he had his suspicions, he was still much more composed.
"Yichen, do you know why Shuer suddenly became like this?" Gu Jin asked tentatively.
Seeing this, Yun Yichen simply told the two of them about Gu Shuyan delivering the letter on behalf of Xu Yunzhi.
After hearing the story, Gu Renjie's anger subsided considerably, but he was still puzzled as to why Xu Yunzhi addressed Yun Yichen as his elder brother. Was there something he didn't know?
Gu Renjie's expression changed, and Gu Jin couldn't help but scratch his head in exasperation. Meeting Gu Renjie's questioning gaze, Gu Jin gritted his teeth and finally told the truth.
"Renjie, actually Xu Yunzhi is your younger brother."
Gu Jin's voice was kind, but to Gu Renjie it was like a thunderclap in the sky, lingering in his mind for a long time.
He never expected that his trouble with Yun Yichen because of Gu Shuyan would lead to such a shocking revelation.
Gu Jin had originally planned to tell him at a more opportune time, but now that things had come to this point, he couldn't hide it any longer. It was better to tell him the truth sooner rather than later, so that he could be mentally prepared.
"How could this be? This doesn't make sense, it's completely illogical!"
Gu Renjie shook his head, his face full of disbelief. He had survived by the skin of his teeth thanks to his parents' prior arrangements; there was no reason for him to have a younger brother left behind.
Besides, Xu Yunzhi was the crown prince of Jin. Even if someone brought him to Jin, how did he enter the palace and become the crown prince of Jin?
Could it be that the Emperor of Jin was a fool who couldn't even recognize his own son?
Seeing that Gu Renjie couldn't accept this fact, Yun Yichen simply got up and placed the letter in Gu Renjie's hands, letting him read the contents of the letter himself.
While Gu Renjie was reading the letter, Gu Jin said to Yun Yichen, "Even if Shu'er saw this letter, she wouldn't be so devastated. We all know her resilience; she would never become so fragile because of one thing. So this letter is probably just a trigger; there must be something else on Shu'er's mind."
Yun Yichen agreed with Gu Jin's analysis. Gu Shuyan couldn't possibly have reacted so strongly to this matter. Perhaps it was all because of that other thing?
With suspicions forming in his mind, Yun Yichen felt it was time to find out the truth about the memorial tablet enshrined in the temple. And was the child named Gu Rui really her son?
"Yichen, have you thought of something?"
Seeing Yun Yichen suddenly fall silent, Gu Jin hurriedly asked, but Yun Yichen just shook his head: "I was thinking, what could have happened to Shu'er at such a young age to cause her such a big blow?"
Gu Jin also couldn't understand this, since Gu Shuyan had always acted normally.
The two men lowered their heads in deep thought. Gu Renjie looked at the contents of the letter, but he simply couldn't believe that Xu Yunzhi was his twin brother. Even though it was written clearly in black and white, he still refused to accept this fact.
"Renjie, stop looking."
After an unknown amount of time, Gu Renjie had almost worn several holes in the letter before Gu Jin stepped forward, took the letter from his hand, and comforted him.
"Father, is everything written in this letter true?" Gu Renjie looked at Gu Jin with some confusion, revealing the vulnerability that a child should have in front of him for the first time.
Seeing him like this, Gu Jin felt very sorry for him. He patted his shoulder but did not answer his question. He simply said, "Let's go home."
The father and son walked out one after the other. Seeing this, Yun Yichen hurriedly wanted to follow, but was stopped by Gu Jin.
"Shu'er doesn't want to see you right now."
