Chapter 568 Sharp-tongued and sharp-tongued

Chapter 568 Sharp-tongued and sharp-tongued

Slowly turning her head, Meng Wei looked at Gu Renjie's flushed face and stammered, "Young Master Gu? What are you doing here?"

Yes! What's he doing here?

Gu Renjie asked himself the same question, then quickly glanced at Meng Wei's hand.

"I, I, I came here to..."

"My young master came here specifically to see Miss Meng."

Before Gu Renjie could finish speaking, the guard standing nearby couldn't stand it anymore and finished his sentence for him.

Gu Renjie was even more embarrassed now. He turned around and wanted to glare at the guard, but when he met Meng Wei's incredulous yet inquisitive gaze, he didn't know what to do.

Over the past twenty years, he has learned to paint and write poetry, and he has learned loyalty, filial piety, and propriety. But who can tell him what to do in this situation?

The two stared at each other, neither knowing what to say. After a long while, Gu Renjie coughed and said awkwardly, "Have you really thought this through?"

The question, which seemed to come out of nowhere, left Meng Wei somewhat bewildered. Before she could figure out what Gu Renjie meant, she heard him say, "You should have already guessed why I'm here at this time. Actually, I like you."

Gu Renjie felt that saying those words had taken all his courage, but when he actually said them, they didn't seem so difficult to say.

"I like you!"

The four words were like a spell, repeating endlessly in Meng Wei's mind.

"What did you just say?" She thought she must have misheard. She still remembered the first time Gu Renjie had shown her such dislike.

But now he says he likes her, which Meng Wei finds hard to believe.

"I said, I like you, I, Gu Renjie, like you. So, please don't marry someone else, okay?"

As Gu Renjie spoke, his voice became pleading. He loved her, didn't want her to marry someone else, and even less did he want to never see her again in this lifetime.

Gu Renjie's words were so clear that Meng Wei, looking at him, finally understood why he had appeared in her boudoir.

It turned out that he thought she was getting married, which is why he dared to come looking for her.

"good!"

A warm feeling washed over Meng Wei, and she readily agreed as she looked at Gu Renjie. Now it was Gu Renjie's turn to be incredulous. He looked into her eyes, and saw a smile and a deep affection within them.

"Are you really willing to stay?"

"Um!"

"You didn't try to comfort me?"

"Um!"

Gu Renjie suddenly became childish, asking again and again until he was sure that Meng Wei had indeed agreed to him. Only then did he smile like a fool and hold Meng Wei's hand tightly.

Gu Renjie thought that, given his personality, he would let Ji Shi choose a woman of equal social standing for him over time, and then he would marry, have children, and live out the rest of his life.

But fate was kind to him, allowing him to meet a woman like Meng Wei.

"But what about your marriage?"

After his initial excitement, Gu Renjie remembered what the letter said: Meng Wei had agreed to his request. Should he then help Meng Wei cancel the engagement?

Gu Renjie had already thought it through. Since he was the one who made Meng Wei change her mind, he certainly couldn't let Meng Wei bear the other party's anger alone.

However, Meng Wei looked blankly at his words and asked, "What marriage?"

Looking at Meng Wei's appearance, Gu Renjie immediately understood everything. Thinking of the helplessness and compromise expressed in the letter, he realized that only that girl could do such a thing.

"Oh, I meant our marriage. Don't you want to marry me?"

Being a straight man by nature, Gu Renjie asked a thoughtless question, and Meng Wei's face turned bright red instantly after hearing his words.

"What are you saying? I need to sleep. You should go back now!"

Meng Wei withdrew her hand and turned her head away. Only then did Gu Renjie realize how outrageous his words had been.

"Okay, then you get some rest. I'll head back now and come back another day."

After saying this, Gu Renjie glanced at Meng Wei reluctantly before slinking away through the window.

The next day, Gu Renjie went straight to the Yun residence after returning from court. Seeing his younger sister leisurely enjoying the cool air, Gu Renjie placed the letter directly in front of Gu Shuyan.

"What is this?" Gu Shuyan took the letter, looking completely unfamiliar with it.

"You're pretending, aren't you? Isn't this your doing?"

Gu Renjie knew his sister well enough to know that no one but Gu Shuyan would do something like imitating handwriting to write a letter.

Seeing Gu Renjie's knowing look, Gu Shuyan smiled and sat up. She took the letter and looked at it carefully before slowly saying, "Brother, you're not here to interrogate me, are you? I've helped you a lot. You're being ungrateful."

"You're so sharp-tongued; I never knew you'd become so good at talking."

As Gu Renjie spoke, he poked Gu Shuyan's head. Yun Yichen saw this as soon as he entered the room and immediately adopted a protective stance, saying, "My Shuyan is the kind of person who says what she thinks, unlike some people who like someone but won't admit it, causing my Shuyan so much worry."

Gu Renjie was embarrassed when his weakness was exposed.

"Go ahead and protect her!" Gu Renjie said, then snatched the letter and went back.

“You know perfectly well that your older brother is shy, yet you deliberately tease him.” Gu Shuyan looked at Yun Yichen, then personally got up and pulled him into the house.

"Look, I'm helping you and you're taking his side instead." Yun Yichen looked hurt, which made Gu Shuyan laugh again.

"Okay, okay, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have said that to my husband."

The couple continued their banter as they walked into the house. Meanwhile, at the Gu residence, Madam Ji was busy entertaining Madam Meng.

Previously, the Ji family had sent an invitation to Madam Meng to visit their home. Madam Meng originally intended to come alone, but later changed her mind and brought Meng Wei with her.

As soon as Gu Renjie entered the mansion, a maidservant came forward to inform Madam Ji that she wanted him to come over.

Gu Renjie assumed his mother had something to say to him, so he didn't think much of it and went to the main courtyard in his court robes.

However, once inside the house, Gu Renjie realized that Madam Ji hadn't come to see him about anything; she had clearly invited him to pay his respects to his future mother-in-law.

Looking at himself still in his court robes, Gu Renjie said apologetically, "I heard that Mother was looking for me, so I thought Mother had something urgent to attend to and came directly here. I will go and change my clothes before I come to pay my respects to my guest."

Gu Renjie turned and left. Seeing his somewhat dazed look, Madam Ji smiled indifferently and said, "This child is just a little too honest. Madam Meng, please don't take offense."

Madam Meng couldn't really take offense. The man was dressed in court attire to see her; even if he didn't mind, she couldn't help but mind.
