Chapter 715 Collaboration - Incompetent Teammates
Everyone says that when it comes to speaking official jargon, Gu Dalang of the Marquis of Yi'an's mansion is the best.
Ji Wenjin didn't expect Gu Renjie to react so quickly. He was just testing him, but Gu Renjie had already met his challenge.
No wonder the emperor entrusted him with important responsibilities; Gu Renjie was far more capable than the other princes.
Having tested him, Ji Wenjin got back to the point: "Tell me the truth, why is His Majesty so good to you? Did he secretly ask you to do something for him?"
Even if Ji Wenjin racked her brains, she could only conclude that Gu Renjie was secretly sent by the emperor to investigate some secret matter because of his competence.
Little did he know that Gu Renjie was not his aunt and uncle's son at all.
Ji Wenjin looked serious, and her intense gaze made Gu Renjie feel helpless.
"Why would you say that, brother?" Gu Renjie asked.
Upon seeing this, Ji Wenjin shared her analysis with Gu Renjie, who couldn't help but give a wry smile after listening.
"Brother, you're overthinking it. His Majesty didn't ask me to do anything for him."
There were some things he didn't want to hide from Ji Wenjin, but they were of great importance, and the fewer people who knew, the better.
"Really not?"
Ji Wenjin clearly didn't believe it, but Gu Renjie insisted that Ji Wenjin couldn't just force him to accept this label.
Just as Ji Wenjin was about to stop pressuring Gu Renjie to admit it, Gu Yingjie suddenly appeared out of nowhere and looked at Gu Renjie with disapproval, "Brother, this is wrong of you. Why do you have to hide it from Brother Wenjin?"
As soon as Gu Yingjie appeared, Gu Renjie silently called him a terrible teammate.
Even though Ji Wenjin wasn't planning to ask any further questions, he suddenly appeared and said something out of the blue, so all his previous words were for nothing.
"Renjie, what exactly happened? What does Yingjie mean by that?"
As expected, Ji Wenjin once again posed a soul-searching question.
At this point, it was clear that the matter could no longer be covered up, so Gu Renjie had no choice but to tell Ji Wenjin the truth.
Gu Renjie glanced back at the guard who had followed him since childhood. After the guard went out to check and closed the door from the outside, Gu Renjie looked at Ji Wenjin with a serious expression.
“What I’m about to say might overturn your understanding, so I hope you’d better be mentally prepared beforehand.”
Gu Renjie knew that Ji Wenjin was always steady, but he still couldn't help but remind her.
"Alright, what is it that I can't accept? Just tell me!"
Before Ji Wenjin arrived, he had made countless assumptions. Now that the answer was about to be revealed, he couldn't help but feel a little excited.
Seeing Ji Wenjin's eager gaze, Gu Renjie stopped beating around the bush and directly told Ji Wenjin about his background.
Ji Wenjin thought she had become so composed that nothing could shake her resolve, but she never expected that hearing that Gu Renjie was actually the son of the deposed Consort Yun would still cause her great turmoil.
After glancing at the teacup in front of her, Ji Wenjin couldn't wait to take a sip of tea to calm her mind.
However, the teacup had just been picked up and, before it could even reach the air, it lost its balance and fell to the ground.
The crisp sound of shattering porcelain startled him. He frantically reached for the broken pieces, but Gu Renjie quickly stopped him, saying, "Let the maids clean it up!"
"Okay!" Ji Wenjin replied, mechanically withdrawing his hand. Before Gu Renjie could offer any advice, Ji Wenjin had already stood up on his own.
"I have to go back first!"
As Ji Wenjin spoke, she left the Marquis's residence almost as if she were fleeing.
Watching Ji Wenjin's disappearing figure, Gu Renjie glared fiercely at Gu Yingjie!
"Why are you looking at me like that? I'm just telling the truth. Besides, Brother Wenjin isn't an outsider; he'll find out sooner or later anyway."
Gu Yingjie looked so self-righteous that Gu Renjie was furious and gave him a hard knock on the head.
"You're more trouble than you're worth, that's you."
Gu Renjie was angry, but as Gu Yingjie said, Ji Wenjin, as his older cousin, would find out sooner or later.
Besides, Gu Yingjie is still my younger brother. Does he think he can just disown me because I said something wrong?
"Speak! What do you want from me?"
Upon hearing Gu Renjie speak, Gu Yingjie suddenly slapped his thigh, "Oh dear, I completely forgot about the important matter. It's my sister-in-law; I don't know what happened, she fainted in our yard just now."
Distracted by what had just happened, Gu Yingjie completely forgot the purpose of his visit to Gu Renjie.
"You, you idiot."
Gu Renjie decided that he really didn't want to acknowledge this younger brother anymore. If he couldn't figure this out, then so be it. Didn't he know which was more important?
Giving Gu Yingjie a look of disappointment and frustration, Gu Renjie rushed out of the study like a gust of wind.
Gu Yingjie wanted to call out to him, but seeing that he had already walked far away, she could only swallow the words she was about to say.
As Gu Yingjie left the study, he walked back somewhat dejectedly when a sneer suddenly came from beside him.
"You still have the nerve to be young? It's all your fault. Now my older brother definitely thinks I'm just an unreliable, stupid younger brother."
Looking at the culprit beside him, Gu Yingjie thought that if it were in the past, he would definitely have given her a good beating, but now, seeing how difficult it was for her to walk, Gu Yingjie decided to let her go this time.
"Brother, do you think you're not stupid? You only say half of what you mean. Do you think your brother will scold you again when he gets to your sister-in-law's place?"
Gu Shuyan seemed to enjoy making things worse, which made Gu Yingjie roll his eyes at her repeatedly.
"Don't come to me if you need anything in the future. Go find someone else if you want."
Gu Yingjie raised his head arrogantly, adopting an attitude that said he wouldn't help Gu Shuyan even if she begged him later, and walked ahead of her.
Seeing that her brother was truly angry, Gu Shuyan realized she shouldn't have provoked Gu Yingjie like that, so she quickly followed up and said, "Brother, don't be angry! I was wrong, okay?"
Gu Shuyan's voice was already soft and sweet, and now it carried a hint of grievance, causing Gu Yingjie to unconsciously slow down his steps as he left.
"You really know you were wrong?"
Although Gu Renjie did not turn around, his tone clearly softened.
Seeing this, Gu Shuyan quickly pressed her advantage, saying, "You really know you were wrong! Brother is so incredibly intelligent, it was I who was blind to your greatness."
Perhaps Gu Yingjie was naturally inclined to dote on his younger sister. Seeing that Gu Shuyan was coaxing him like this, he immediately lowered his proud head slightly.
"If that's the case, then I'll forgive you this time."
Although Gu Yingjie wasn't angry with Gu Shuyan, he still maintained the elder brother's dignity that he had painstakingly cultivated, so when he looked back at Gu Shuyan, he still adopted a haughty demeanor.
Seeing that he had relented, Gu Shuyan, supported by her maid, stepped forward and asked, "Brother hasn't said yet what Brother Wenjin's attitude is!"
