Chapter 746 Gathering - Accusing
Receiving so much information in one night, even a resolute old general was somewhat overwhelmed and couldn't process it all.
Fortunately, Ji Wenxuan did not urge him, but simply waited quietly for the old general, accompanying him to slowly accept these facts.
It wasn't until dawn that General Ji slowly began to respond.
"You go back and rest first. I'll handle this."
As General Ji spoke, he waved his hand, signaling Ji Wenxuan to leave, and then he himself got up and went to the inner room.
Seeing that although there was still fatigue in his eyes, they were clearly much clearer, Ji Wenxuan didn't linger any longer, clasped his hands in greeting, and went back.
General Ji didn't know how he got through that night. He had spent his whole life fighting on the battlefield, but in the end, no one could see through him.
What these kids are up to these days is none of General Ji's business, whether he wants to or not. He's getting old anyway, and once these two years of this are over, it'll be time for him to go back and see his eldest son.
At 3:45 AM, just as the old general was tidying up his tent, Uncle Ji rushed in.
"General, I have something to report."
It is said that there are no fathers and sons on the battlefield. The old general looked at his youngest son and could hardly remember the last time he called him father.
The old general watched as his lips moved and asked, "What is it?"
"Last night, a group of people rode into the city. According to the general guarding the city, it was the young general who let them in. I believe that the identities of these people are suspicious, so I have come to ask the general to investigate thoroughly."
Second Master Ji was unaware of the change in General Ji's gaze towards him. His attention was entirely focused on how to bring down Ji Wenxuan, so he wouldn't notice any change in the old man's expression.
"Unusual identities? Then what do you think these people's identities are?"
The old general sat down in the chair, waiting for Uncle Ji to ask the next question.
Actually, General Ji asked this question to test Uncle Ji and see what he would say.
Uncle Ji, however, lacked such awareness and realized that General Ji was testing him. Upon hearing the question, Uncle Ji was overjoyed and immediately replied, "I believe that this group of people chose to enter the city in the middle of the night, which must be something shady, and since they came from another country's territory, they must be spies from another country without a doubt."
"So, according to you, the young general deliberately let people in because he was in cahoots with a spy?"
General Ji continued to press for answers. Uncle Ji had only intended to guide the old general, but he hadn't expected him to ask the question himself.
"That must be so."
Uncle Ji was thrilled and continued speaking, following General Ji's lead.
To his utter surprise, as soon as he finished speaking, General Ji slammed his hand on the low table.
"You really are my good son. If I didn't know the inside story, I might have actually believed you."
General Ji's words struck Ji's second uncle hard. As soon as he heard the news this morning, he rushed over, hoping to make a big fuss and remove Ji Wenxuan from his position as young general.
If all goes well, it would be best to deal with Ji Wenxuan or expel him from the military camp. But he never expected that General Ji would know the inside story.
"Father, I was wrong, I know I was wrong."
Uncle Ji was at a loss for what to do, so he could only kneel down and apologize to the old general.
"Do you know where you went wrong?"
A casual question completely baffled Uncle Ji.
He was merely instinctively admitting his mistake; how could he possibly know what he had done wrong?
With his eyes darting around, Uncle Ji continued, "Son should have investigated thoroughly before reporting. He shouldn't have made assumptions on his own; he almost misunderstood his nephew Wenxuan."
Having gone through so many years of trials and tribulations, Uncle Ji quickly adjusted his mindset after realizing his recklessness.
The old general was in a fit of rage and paid no heed to what he was saying. Thinking about how he had been kept in the dark and manipulated for so many years, he felt nothing less than to beat his son to death.
"General Ji is unworthy of his position. Effective immediately, his general title is revoked, and he is forbidden from ever setting foot in the military camp again. As for His Majesty, I will personally submit a memorial to report this matter."
With just one sentence from the old general, Uncle Ji was plunged into despair.
It was just a simple oversight, how could it negate all the hard work I've put in over the years!
"Father, no, you can't do this to me."
Second Master Ji shook his head, looking at General Ji with a pleading expression.
He knew very well that as long as General Ji could change his mind, his position as general would remain unchanged.
"Why not? You've been mediocre all these years. If it weren't for my protection, how could you have gotten to where you are now? But what have you been doing all these years?"
General Ji clutched his chest as he spoke, his face filled with deep sorrow and grief.
Thinking of what Ji Wenxuan had shown him yesterday, his heart felt as if it were being ripped out piece by piece, and he was in excruciating pain.
Looking at General Ji's appearance and recalling what he had said, Uncle Ji wondered if his father had already found out about that matter.
The moment the thought crossed his mind, Uncle Ji immediately dismissed it: Father had only known how to train troops and defend the borders all these years, how could he possibly investigate that matter? Besides, most of those who knew about it back then were dead, so even if he wanted to investigate, he wouldn't be able to.
Thinking of this, Uncle Ji felt a little relieved.
“Father, I know I am dull-witted, but I have diligently assisted you all these years. Please forgive me this time, considering that I have worked hard even if I have not made any great contributions!”
Uncle Ji continued to play the emotional card, but it was clear that General Ji was not moved by him this time.
"Grandfather, Second Uncle seems to be genuinely repentant, so let's just let it go this time!"
Ji Wenxuan, who had gone back to rest, changed his clothes and came back at some point. When he saw his second uncle kneeling on the ground begging, the corners of Ji Wenxuan's lips couldn't help but curl up.
The old general clearly hadn't expected Ji Wenxuan to come and plead for his second uncle. Seeing that he had such a magnanimous heart, he felt somewhat comforted.
"Don't worry about this matter, Grandfather will handle it."
The old general insisted on removing Uncle Ji, this parasite, but little did he know that Ji Wenxuan's offer of help was not out of any magnanimity.
He simply didn't want to let Uncle Ji off so easily, that's all.
“Grandfather, Second Uncle is my elder after all. Since he has already admitted his mistake, why not give him a chance to reform? If he makes the same mistake again, it will not be too late for you to deal with him.”
As Ji Wenxuan spoke, he also knelt down in front of the old general.
One is his son, and the other is his grandson. At this age, the old general can only rely on Ji Wenxuan. Seeing how strongly he was protecting his second uncle, he could only nod in the end.
"Since Xuan'er has pleaded for you so earnestly, you may stay for the time being!"
