Chapter 873 The Truth - Shifting the Blame 1
The fourth prince and the others who had already left couldn't help but look at him upon hearing this.
They had never heard of this old lady having any dealings with the Crown Prince of Wei, so why was she sending him gifts?
Upon seeing the several pairs of puzzled eyes, Bai Xu immediately understood. He hadn't expected that the old lady had such a plan.
"Back to the inn."
Bai Xu took the box and pulled Princess Baiyun into the carriage.
Watching the carriage leave, Xu Menglong's eyes flickered slightly before he silently got into his own carriage.
Inside the carriage, Princess Baiyun looked at Bai Xu, somewhat puzzled as to what was wrong with her brother.
Did the old lady say anything when she gave you the things?
Bai Xu asked, and Princess Baiyun quickly repeated the old lady's original words. After hearing this, Bai Xu couldn't wait to open the box.
Inside are black and white crescent-shaped jade pendants that can be put together. Rather than being crescent-shaped, they resemble a Bagua diagram.
Beneath the jade pendant lay a letter; without a doubt, it was from the old lady.
Bai Xu slowly unfolded the letter, and upon seeing the first line, he knew that he had truly been tricked by the old lady.
After reading the entire letter, Bai Xu couldn't help but exhale, "I never imagined she would go to such lengths for the sake of the Gu family!"
The events of the previous dynasty are long gone. The old lady spent her entire life in the Gu family; those were her true family. Now, in order to protect the Gu family and completely sever ties with it, the other party has chosen such methods.
Seeing that Bai Xu's expression was off, Bai Yun took the letter from his hand and read it. The first line read: "From the moment His Highness the Crown Prince sees this letter, you will have nowhere to retreat."
Bai Yun's expression hardened. She glanced at Bai Xu, then quickly began to scan the entire letter.
The letter clearly stated what the jade pendant in the box was and also told the old lady the location of the treasure. However, due to the passage of time, no detailed map of the mountain was left behind.
"Brother, is what's written here credible?"
It's just two crescent-shaped jade pendants that can be combined. Princess Baiyun wondered if the old lady was just making a fuss.
Unlike the young and inexperienced Princess Baiyun, Bai Xu knew very well that these two jade pendants were the key to unlocking the treasure.
"The old lady deliberately chose this day to have you hand over the item to me, so as to draw everyone's attention to me. If she had given me a fake, they would have been suspicious. Therefore, this item is definitely genuine."
"Doesn't that mean that Madam Hou has turned my brother into a target?"
Princess Baiyun finally understood. When she thought about how her brother had saved the old lady of the Marquis's house before, and how the other party had repaid kindness with enmity, she instantly lost all goodwill towards the Marquis of Yi'an's mansion.
Unlike Princess Baiyun, Bai Xu was quite grateful to the old lady for giving him the things.
To teach something that a family has guarded for over a hundred years so easily is something not everyone can do.
The old lady did this probably because she sensed an unprecedented danger. She understood that it was safest to hand this thing over to him, so she simply did him a favor and also passed this hot potato to him.
In the end, Bai Xu still thought too highly of the old lady.
Although the jade pendant was an important item, it had nothing to do with the treasure. The old lady's repentance was only because she was worried that the other party might disturb the spirits of her deceased parents.
Of course, no one else knew this. When the news reached the palace, those who knew about the treasure would only guess that Bai Xu had the treasure map.
The moon was very beautiful at night, as if it were shrouded in a layer of white gauze.
After dinner, the old lady suddenly felt a tightness in her chest and collapsed to the ground.
The maids and servants were quite frightened and immediately sent someone to fetch the Marquis and his wife. Looking at the old lady lying on the bed being examined by the imperial physician, the Marquis's wife asked worriedly, "Imperial physician, what's wrong with the old lady?"
The imperial physician glanced at Lady Hou and then shook his head.
Once they were in the outer room, the imperial physician told the Marquis and his wife, "The old lady's pulse is weak and feeble; it seems she has been poisoned."
"What? The old lady stays at home every day, how could she be poisoned!"
Not only was the Lady of the Marquis shocked, but even the Marquis's mouth dropped open.
"So, someone actually poisoned the Marquis's residence!"
The Marquis was more worried about someone harming him than about the old lady.
"No, no, the old lady has been poisoned for some time now."
The imperial physician, seeing that the Marquis had misunderstood something, quickly offered an explanation.
"That means it's poisoning. Does the imperial physician have any treatment?"
The Marquis finally got back to the main topic. The imperial physician glanced at the two of them and shook his head helplessly.
"The old lady's poison has already penetrated her lungs and internal organs; I'm afraid she won't live much longer."
Such important words were only spoken by the imperial physician at the very end. The Marquis was immediately enraged and grabbed the imperial physician by the neck.
"If that's the case, why didn't you say so earlier!"
Although he loved himself even more, the person in front of him was, after all, his own mother. It would be strange if he didn't react at all when he knew his mother was about to die.
Lady Hou saw the imperial physician struggling to breathe under his grip and quickly stepped forward to pull the Marquis away. "My lord, the imperial physician is only thinking of our Marquis's mansion. Please let go."
Seeing this, his personal maidservant also joined in to help, and the two of them worked together to finally pull the Marquis away.
After coughing for a while, the imperial physician finally caught his breath. Lady Hou quickly stepped forward and apologized, saying, "Imperial Physician, I'm sorry. My lord acted impulsively. I hope you will be lenient with him."
The imperial physicians had treated patients for many years, and every family they encountered treated them with utmost courtesy. They had never seen anyone as kind as the Marquis.
However, considering that he hadn't told the truth immediately, he ultimately didn't really hold it against the Marquis.
"Madam, please rest assured, I will not take it to heart. However, I'm afraid the old lady's health will not allow her to make it through tomorrow. Madam should make plans as soon as possible."
After the imperial physician finished speaking, he bid farewell to the Lady of the Marquis. The Lady of the Marquis instructed her servants to escort the imperial physician out properly, while she herself turned and went into the house without even looking at the Marquis.
The old lady was not awake at first, but the loud noise outside woke her up.
"Mother, how are you? Are you feeling any better?"
Lady Hou did not mention that she had been poisoned, but she had heard what the imperial physician had said.
So the old lady looked out the door and slowly said, "Have Jin'er and granddaughter-in-law come over at dawn tomorrow. I have something to say to them."
The old lady's voice was very weak, and when the Lady Hou heard this, she couldn't help but tear up.
Since she married into the Marquis's household, her in-laws had never made things difficult for her, and they never complained even when she remained childless for six years. Moreover, when the Marquis wanted to take a concubine, the old lady helped her avoid many of them.
