Chapter 288 Man is Iron, Food is Steel

After moving, who will do her laundry, make her bed, and prepare all sorts of necessities? It's not that Ji Xiaoxiao doesn't want to hire a maid, but in this era of cataclysmic changes and devastation, people's hearts have become corrupted, and morality has declined, making safety and trustworthiness difficult to guarantee. And to make matters worse, she's hired an ungrateful wretch; she'll have her day to cry.

After much deliberation, the Liao family decided they couldn't leave.

If you're staying at someone else's house, you should at least pay some rent!

Ji Xiaoxiao turned on the tap and scooped up a handful of cold water to wash her face.

After washing up, Ji Xiaoxiao opened the door. The big dog Liao Yu was squatting directly opposite the door, shaking its head and muttering to itself.

"They're gone."

"Yes." Hahaha, the dog's tail wagging.

The two arrived at the entrance of the Hope Base, where some familiar faces were filled with hope.

"Thank you, Ms. He."

Ji Xiaoxiao waved her hand, got into the car, started the engine, and drove ahead.

Led by Ji Xiaoxiao, the grain-collecting team climbed mountains and forded rivers, finally arriving at the small village Ji Xiaoxiao had mentioned. The village was sparsely populated and deserted; the cold winter wind howled, sending shivers down their spines.

"It's right here."

Ji Xiaoxiao led the grain-collecting team through the small village. The excitement of the crowd gradually subsided, and their hopes were transformed into footprints under their feet, which were gradually filled in by the wind and sand.

"Sister He, is there really any food here?" a young city guard asked.

Looking at the young face of the city guard, Ji Xiaoxiao said with absolute confidence, "Yes."

In the previous "Doomsday Showdown," Ji Xiaoxiao's strength was evident to all. Passionate young men admire the strong, and naturally, they were convinced of Ji Xiaoxiao's abilities. If their idol said there was food here, then there definitely would be food here.

Hmph, those brainless fans are truly tough guys.

Ji Xiaoxiao stopped talking and focused entirely on sensing her surroundings. To the left, nothing; to the right, nothing… wait, that's a real miser.

"Everyone get ready, there's a strange beast 300 meters to the right."

As soon as Ji Xiaoxiao finished speaking, the orderly ranks began to stir.

"Quiet, calm down!" Ji Xiaoxiao shouted. "They're just a few iron roosters, what's there to be afraid of? Iron roosters are huge and have delicious meat; one can feed three grown men. Ten iron roosters are enough for you kids to eat."

More than 300 people came out to collect grain, but only 20 or 30 entered the small village. Most of them were young men over 18 years old who had experienced the "apocalyptic massacre." They were brave, resourceful, courageous, and knowledgeable, but their character still needed to be honed.

Food?

The two clueless kids looked at each other, then laughed at the sight of them swallowing hard.

Food, food, still delicious chicken.

With a slurp, the naive boys cheered and swarmed toward the place Ji Xiaoxiao had indicated.

"Hopefully, the defenders of the base have received free food delivered to their door."

Ji Xiaoxiao walked ahead and was the first to see the iron rooster dressed in bright red.

The Iron Rooster is an evolved form of the rooster, enormous in size, as big as an ostrich, with dazzling fiery red feathers that can scorch your hand. Its chin, throat, and nape are all black, with a metallic sheen, as hard as iron, protecting its fragile neck.

Predators wanting to hunt the Iron Rooster have nowhere to attack—the chin, throat, and back of the neck. The rest of the body, though made of mortal flesh, is scalding hot, causing the rooster to wince. "You bite off my feathers, I'll retaliate with a mouthful of blisters," goes the saying. The Iron Rooster is known for its vengeful nature, hence its name.

Ten miserly roosters were leisurely eating insects in what used to be a field when they heard the commotion and gave a cold glance to the green-glowing wolf.

A bunch of clueless little bugs, ignore them.

The city guards, gazing at the plump iron rooster, drooled and beamed with joy.

Liao Yu led them to slowly surround Iron Rooster, their steps light and swift, quickly forming an impenetrable encirclement. Just as Iron Rooster sensed danger, Liao Yu gave a command, and a large group of men joyfully pounced. Because they couldn't directly touch Iron Rooster, increasingly massive and heavy stones rained down from the sky, densely packed like a torrential downpour.

Ji Xiaoxiao stood aside and watched coldly. While they were fully engrossed in the fun of hunting, Ji Xiaoxiao's figure flashed and she sneaked into the village's granary, where she haphazardly filled one granary after another with a pile of supplies.

Seeing that more than half of the supplies from the Qiankun Pearl were gone, Ji Xiaoxiao's heart ached beyond measure. Clutching her heart, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at the precious supplies, Ji Xiaoxiao hardened her heart and turned away from this place of sorrow.

Back in the fields, the naive young men were loudly cheering as they roasted a rooster. The aroma was irresistible, stretching for meters. Ji Xiaoxiao took a deep sniff and felt her stomach burn with hunger.

"Sister He, where have you been? If you're any later, the chicken will be gone."

Seeing the young men sitting on the ground, wolfing down their food like a whirlwind, Ji Xiaoxiao had no doubt about what the man said.

Ji Xiaoxiao jumped into the field, grabbed a huge chicken wing, and started gnawing on it.

Thirty minutes later, the chicken bones scattered all over the ground demonstrated the power of humankind.

Having eaten and drunk their fill, the city guards patted their bellies, their faces beaming with happiness. Ji Xiaoxiao picked her teeth with a blade of grass and casually told them that she had found a granary full of supplies.

The good news was so shocking that the city guards stared in stunned silence for a moment. The next second, a deafening cheer erupted.

Calling on friends and family, they moved goods and loaded them onto trucks, and the supplies in the granary were moved away by the city's defenders working together.

Ji Xiaoxiao did not join the moving; she stayed in the car, resting with her eyes closed.

Liao Yu sat in the driver's seat, and when he turned his head, he saw Ji Xiaoxiao, who was as still as a virgin.
