In a corner of the street, the adults in the neighborhood have specially set aside a small area for children to play, with a simple slide, sandpit, and swings. The place is small, but it is quiet and safe, without the danger of passing cars.
Xia Cai ran down into the sandpit with a smile.
"Get out of here, we don't want you to play with us." A chubby little fat man shoved Xia Cai.
"I'm not playing with you guys." Xia Cai said indignantly, angrily kicking down and destroying the little hill that the other children had worked so hard to make.
"Xia Cai, you're so mean!" A little girl suddenly burst into tears.
"Little crybaby, shame on you, little crybaby, shame on you." Xia Cai stretched out his index finger and stroked his cheek, while his other friends ignored his anger.
"Xia Cai, you're bullying the little sister again."
While playing on the slide, slightly older children swarmed over.
"I just love teasing him."
Xia Cai held his head high, looking fearless.
I'm pretty awesome!
The children, both big and small, were furious and raised their fists to bully the few.
Xia Cai accepted all comers; if one came, he would beat one up; if two came, he would kick them both away.
The children's war ultimately ended in Xia Cai's victory.
If you lose, you cry and run home to complain.
As the sun sets, a dark orange-red hue permeates the sky.
"Mom, Xia Cai is bullying people."
"Dad, Xia Cai is bullying the little sister."
"Xia Cai hit me again, Mom, it hurts."
“Xia is a bad kid, Dandan doesn’t want to play with him anymore.”
The houses in the neighborhood are close together, and the children chatter away, making a lot of noise.
"Okay, okay, I'm not playing with Xia Cai anymore."
"One who stays near vermilion gets stained red, and one who stays near ink gets stained black"—this is the same idea as the sage.
Speaking of Xia Kui, the adults were also furious.
They are truly exceptional; there are just as many as there are in this world. They must have had eight lifetimes of bad luck to be neighbors with Xia Kui's family.
Alas, evil people will be dealt with by evil people themselves. They can't control them; let God deal with them.
"Okay, I'll go."
Suddenly, the bustling street became as silent as still water.
"Drip drip drip, drip drip drip."
The deafening sirens echoed along the way, waking the drowsy neighborhood.
With a few loud bangs, someone rushed out of the house.
"Police? Where are they going?"
"Murderer? Thief? Robbery/burglary?"
"Hey, it looks like they're going to Xia Kui's house."
"Oh, going to Xia Kui's house! It's alright, it's alright, everyone go back to eat and sleep!"
Once again, the noisy crowd returned to their respective homes, each going back to their own mothers.
The Xia family was in complete chaos.
The police car kicked up a cloud of dust, and three righteous-looking men rushed out as soon as the door was opened. They strode forward with their heads held high, giving the impression of being fierce and menacing.
"Who? Who called the police?"
Zhao Wuyuan stepped forward and explained the reason.
The burly man from the capital bypassed Zhao Wuyuan, his eyes coldly fixed on Xia Kui. "You...molested your daughter?"
Xia Kui flaunted his power, ruling the neighborhood like a king, and his behavior towards ordinary people was limited to his chickens and dogs. But when he faced an official, he trembled with fear and trepidation.
"No, absolutely not," Xia Kui said firmly, his expression resolute and his tone certain, almost as if he were kneeling on the ground, raising his hands to swear an oath to the heavens with all his might.
"No?" The burly policeman frowned, turned to look at Ji Xiaoxiao, who looked like a frightened bird, and couldn't help but ask in a soft voice, "Little sister, tell your uncle what your father did to you? Don't be afraid, your uncle is a righteous hero who is going to fight bad guys."
A hero of justice?
To soothe a child!
Ji Xiaoxiao glanced at Zhao Wuyuan, who nodded to her. Only then did Ji Xiaoxiao slowly begin to speak, uttering incoherent and disjointed words.
Everyone present was intelligent; once they sorted out the sequence and logic, the overall picture became clear.
"Officer, you heard this young woman's words with your own ears. I am innocent. Don't wrong an innocent person."
Xia Kui breathed a sigh of relief; thank God he didn't end up in jail.
Ji Xiaoxiao glanced at him discreetly, thinking to herself, "Be happy now, because you'll be crying later."
The burly policeman knew the whole story and had a general understanding of the family's situation. Although the girl was still innocent, she was living a life worse than death. Her face was pale, her hair was dry and yellow, and she was petite and thin, all due to long-term malnutrition. Under her long clothes and trousers, long and deep scars were faintly visible, indicating that she was frequently beaten and verbally abused.
He sighed heavily. Even an upright official finds it hard to settle family disputes. He wouldn't have bothered if he hadn't stood up for the little girl.
"Is there anything else?" the burly policeman asked Zhao Wuyuan.
Zhao Wuyuan remained silent, his face turned towards Ji Xiaoxiao, his eyes filled with sorrow.
Ji Xiaoxiao shook her head vigorously at him, "Teacher, I'm not lying to you. My dad dragged me into his room, closed the door, and then beat me hard, beat me really hard."
Zhao Wuyuan remained expressionless.
"Teacher, you don't believe me? Fine, I'll show you the evidence."
Ji Xiaoxiao was furious. She cleanly and neatly took off her shirt. Her thin body was so bony that you could see her bones. Her skin was covered with purple and blue marks, and there were some new and some old crisscrossing scars.
Seeing Ji Xiaoxiao's injuries, Zhao Wuyuan was speechless.
The police officers present were stunned for a few seconds. A woman quickly stepped forward, picked up the clothes on the ground, stood in front of Ji Xiaoxiao, and gently dressed her.
"Xia Kui, please come with me to the police station."
The burly man felt a chill run down his spine, overwhelmed with shame.
Xia Kui was shocked and his face turned pale instantly. He hadn't killed anyone, set fires, robbed anyone, or stolen anything. Why was he going to the police station?
