The next day, Han Dong watched from a distance as the lottery was drawn. Shi Lei, having spoken first, was forced into the role of the new "scapegoat" and had no choice but to draw the lot himself.
Three?!
Han Dong looked at the joy on everyone else's faces. Shi Lei, who no longer looked like he was being owed money and not being repaid, left on his own, muttering, "This is so boring."
The room of Shen Jie and Tang Wei was calm before the storm today. Dong Jun drew five people today, which was not bad, and it was alright on its own, since he didn't draw seven people.
Unfortunately, they didn't draw seven people in the entire courtyard today, so five people suddenly became the highest-ranked group. This immediately dampened the spirits of everyone who was in a good mood, and Shen Jie and Tang Wei were hiding in the courtyard outside the house.
Tang Wei muttered softly, "Isn't this alright?"
Shen Jie replied, "It depends on who you're comparing them to." Generally speaking, the number of people they've gained in the past few days is much less than that of the other houses, but the daily lottery is like a daily ranking list. Since the overall ranking list hasn't been released yet, the daily ranking list has become the focus of everyone's attention.
"Walk?"
"Walk!"
After a few subtle actions, the two left the yard to look for work; today would be another day of only eating two meals.
Tang Wei rubbed her rumbling stomach. "There's no meat for lunch again today. When I used to watch the 'Ten Thousand Yuan Household' live stream, I thought the contestants were exaggerating. They ate meat so extravagantly, like they hadn't eaten in days. Now I really understand."
Shen Jie licked her lips and complained, "Forget about eating meat, I don't even have a water cup now, I can't even drink enough water to fill my stomach."
"How about we buy a water bottle for both of us?"
"Okay, I'll see if any of the shops around here sell them."
The recording site for "Tetris" is located in a courtyard that is closer to the newly built "Ten Thousand Yuan Household" area, which dates back to the 1980s and 90s, and is quite a distance from the old area from the 1960s and 70s.
The two strolled around for a while before realizing that this area from the 1980s and 90s didn't have many factories, but the streets were lined with shops, and there was even a special area for food stalls.
The two men passed by, their stomachs growling louder and their noses twitching more and more intensely.
"What will we do if we don't have a factory?"
Tang Wei was visibly listless, a far cry from her bold and ambitious words of yesterday.
Shen Jie sighed as well. The two of them stood in front of a restaurant that was packed with tourists, looking on with longing and envy.
Just then, the shop owner, who was extremely busy, came out with a number dispenser in her hand. "Two people? You might have to wait an hour."
Tang Wei and Shen Jie quickly waved their hands, "We didn't come here to eat."
The proprietress didn't lose her temper after hearing this; she still smiled brightly. "It's alright. There's tea at the entrance. I see your lips are dry. I'm busy right now, so please help yourselves. These are all our signature dishes hanging on the door frame over there. Take a look and see if there's anything you like. You can have the same thing next time you come."
The two were held in place by the proprietress's warm hospitality, feeling somewhat at a loss. If it were any other time, Shen Jie would have gone in to eat if she encountered a proprietor like this, but she was currently recording a program, and although she had the currency she had exchanged yesterday in her pocket, she wanted to save it for when she couldn't hold on any longer.
Tang Wei was also at a loss, and even took a number and joined the queue.
As the two sat on small stools by the door, drinking tea from disposable cups, Tang Wei felt a little embarrassed. She really didn't know how to refuse this enthusiastic boss.
The boss said it was fine and she could drink water if she was thirsty, but she wasn't that shy. She drank the water, got her number, and the boss even found two small stools, wiped them clean, and placed them at the door. Tang Wei just couldn't take her feet anymore.
"I'll treat you to this meal. Their restaurant should have some cheaper options. Let's eat less and eat more at home anyway, since we're not getting enough to eat at home."
Tang Wei was pulled along by Shen Jie earlier, and she almost left as well. In the end, the shopkeeper poured water for the two of them and brought it out. She then took a number, thinking that Shen Jie might have left on her own.
Shen Jie slapped Tang Wei's arm. "It's not like you're the only one who wants to eat. I want to eat too, okay? I'm not as rich as you, so let's split the bill, Boss Tang."
Tang Wei knew this guy was never serious, but she didn't retaliate this time. She just muttered, "Hmph, not as rich as you, Boss Shen."
Shen Jie's eyes curved into crescents as she said, "No, it won't work. We'll still need Boss Tang to take good care of us."
[This courtyard feels like it's packed with so many people, like a sardine can. Why hasn't anyone withdrawn from the competition yet?]
[Isn't this a testament to the limitless potential of humankind? The smallest two side rooms in the outer and middle courtyards have already been converted into two-story communal sleeping areas, one above the other, with a passageway on the side. These two bunk beds are even more impressive than my sixteen-person dorm room in college!]
[This doesn't even feel like the room's limit; there's still a passageway! (* ̄rǒ ̄)]
[The person upstairs is a real devil! But this place is full, it feels like there's hardly any space left.]
"That's alright. Some of the rooms seem quite spacious, and there's even a common area."
[Is that a room in the Intermediate People's Court? The rooms are indeed bigger. Smaller rooms don't even have bunk beds that are less than a meter wide; they just have large communal bunk beds where people sleep side by side. Tsk tsk tsk, it's only because it's cold that I can't imagine what it would be like in the summer.]
[Haha, I bet the air in every room doesn't smell good. Didn't you see the windows were open during the day, and nobody was inside?]
Why are they all just standing and chatting or squatting like that?
[I looked around, and not a single contestant in any of the rooms bought tables and chairs. They were all eating standing up, holding their bowls. Haha, impressive! They're all amazing people. This show is going to be tough.]
Is this area in the "Ten Thousand Yuan Household" area? I went there but didn't see it.
[It's in an alley in the new district, a bit away from the main street. I just went there and even ran into some contestants strolling around. (Group photo.JPG)]
[We can even take photos together?! I was wondering why the park wasn't closed for filming this time. That's great! It's good that the park isn't closed. I just managed to snag tickets a few days ago, and I was a little worried that it might suddenly close for a variety show shoot.]
Are there many athletes wandering around the park? I'll buy my ticket in a few days; hopefully I'll run into some.
[It's alright, but you might not be able to recognize them. These contestants are dressed like the NPCs in the park, and some tourists have even bought the same clothes and are wandering around. It's not easy to find them. I just happened to spot them while waiting in line for food.]
