Chapter 39 Island Survival 17

The sun slowly set, taking away its light and leaving only the darkness adorned with faint starlight; night quietly descended.

Scattered lights flickered throughout the buildings of the plague hospital, like tiny fireflies in a reed bed in the all-consuming darkness.

Ivan rounded a corner and suddenly sensed something moving through the darkness. He stopped, and his teammates behind him also stopped.

"alert."

As soon as Ivan finished speaking, Xu Yang, at the back of the group, gripped the prop gun in his hand.

After nightfall, they encountered several groups of people. Compared to the peaceful daytime, the darkness seemed to breed much malice. Ivan and his companions hadn't expected that at night they would not only need to guard against imposters, but also be wary of opportunists.

Those contestants who didn't find any clues, props, or serum during the day would keep an eye on teams that had made a profit at night. Rather than working hard and wasting their health and energy, they preferred to just pick up the easy stuff.

Ivan has excellent night vision; he could see a figure moving in the dark shadows.

"Hey you upstairs, I advise you to leave now, or we're not pushovers."

Ivan first tried to dissuade them with words, but if the other party really intended to rob their team, they wouldn't let them succeed so easily. They now had two vials of serum, and after discussing it, the team decided to go to the safe house in the Plague Hospital to spend the most exhausting period, just to be on the safe side.

Once inside the safe house, Ivan's team will have two hours to relax and regroup. After the safe house has been closed for the maximum period of time, they will go to repair the circuitry and look for an exit.

Besides Ivan's team, the other teams also had the idea of going to the safe house to get through the most difficult period, so Ivan and his team had to get there as soon as possible because they were not sure if the safe house could accommodate the current number of participants.

However, on the way to the safe house, there are many robbers who hide and rest during the day and ambush people at night. If there are only one or two of them, it would be fine, but they seem to have some kind of tacit agreement. When the team passes by, they will rob the team first and then fight among themselves to divide the loot.

When these people encounter a team, they will suddenly and haphazardly rush out to rob them. This catches many small teams heading to safety off guard. Because they do not infect or eliminate others, but only steal items, there is no announcement over the loudspeaker.

The game area lacked communication equipment, leaving many survivors completely unprepared and vulnerable to being ambushed.

In this situation, teams with more members are relatively safer, but due to the mission, many participants' health is not good, and sometimes teammates may even be sacrificed to determine or satisfy the rules.

This resulted in the absence of large groups in the remaining 10 hours.

These opportunists, who lurk in the shadows, have had ample rest during the day. By night, they are physically superior to the other survivors who have been searching all day. In addition, the opportunists have clear objectives: they only steal things and then run away. Under the cover of darkness, they are difficult to track down.

If the survivor squad manages to escape one wave of attacks, their taut nerves and exhausted bodies will not be able to withstand repeated assaults from the opportunists. These opportunists, hiding in the shadows, are like rats in the sewers, difficult to find under the cover of darkness.

Ivan's team was only two hundred meters from the safe house, but they had already encountered two waves of three or four opportunists. Fortunately, Ivan's team was indeed highly skilled.

The first two times, they escaped death thanks to Xu Yang's formidable martial arts skills and the vigilant and sharp reactions of the others.

Ivan frowned, staring at the shadows ahead.

Then, the shadows slowly grew darker, and a figure emerged from them.

The entire Ivan squad kept their eyes glued to their surroundings, huddled together in a circle, focusing their backs on the center of the circle as they watched the movements in all directions.

To their surprise, unlike the previous two times, this time the speculators did not seem to be suddenly attacked, but rather slowly emerged from the shadows.

When the other person's face was fully exposed to the flashlight beam, Ivan's team was somewhat surprised.

The newcomer was none other than Wang Quan, who had joined the team during the day and was the last to leave. Ivan's team knew Wang Quan's identity as a fake, so after their initial surprise, they relaxed considerably, since fakes were much easier to deal with than opportunists.

Ivan raised an eyebrow. "Didn't I say that I wouldn't hold back the next time I see you?"

Wang Quan didn't respond. It wasn't like he wanted to appear in front of Ivan. If it weren't for that devil and that madman asking him to be bait, he would never want to see Ivan again.

Ivan didn't see Zhang Nan and guessed that Zhang Nan had been eliminated by Wang Quan. He wasn't surprised by this, as he didn't have a penchant for saving people.

Xu Yang saw Wang Quan, sneered, and walked towards Wang Quan with a prop gun in hand.

"I'll take you to rest."

Just as Xu Yang was about to eliminate Wang Quan, a sudden change occurred. Because of Wang Quan's appearance, the tight circle that everyone had just formed had a hole. A dark figure suddenly appeared, agile and fast, and in less than half a minute, two people had been eliminated.

By the time the others realized what was happening, it was too late.

Ivan shouted urgently, "Quickly form a circle!"

No sooner had they finished speaking than the same group of speculators they had just encountered rushed out from behind, shattering the circle they had painstakingly regrouped.

In the critical moment, they could only hurry to protect the supplies and serum, but the shadowy figure did not leave. Instead, it took advantage of the chaos to keep eliminating survivors from the group.

Ivan then realized that this was not the chaotic attack he had seen before. It was clearly a premeditated ambush, and the fact that the first two attacks had been repelled might have been staged, all in an effort to eliminate them.
