A month later, when the temperature rose to 10 degrees Celsius, Zuo Ling replaced all the thick quilts in her home with thinner ones.
One day, Zuo Ling was fast asleep when she was woken up by the noise outside. She turned over impatiently, wanting to go back to sleep.
Xiao Hao banged on the door and shouted, "Sister, sister, it's dawn! It's dawn! Get up and see!"
Is it dawn?! I jumped up and drew back the curtains.
A thin mist and bluish light appeared; the sky had truly brightened!
The waterfall was awakened by the noise, stared blankly out the window, rolled over excitedly, and leaped onto the left spirit bed, its little paws sticking out, whimpering incessantly.
Picking it up, Zuo Ling said in a flat tone, "The polar night is over, but a new disaster is about to strike. What's there to be happy about?"
What does it mean when a waterfall stands up with its ears upright?
If you calculate the time, the polar night ended more than half a year earlier than in my previous life.
Downstairs, many people were shouting, running, waving their arms and legs wildly, so excited that they lost their minds.
Zuo Ling wasn't as excited as they were; she noticed that the mist had a slightly yellowish tinge.
I glanced at the time; it was not yet 6 o'clock. I got dressed and went to the lobby.
Seeing her come out, Xiao Hao ran up to her and grabbed her arm, pulling her towards the north balcony.
"Sister, it's dawn. Brother said the polar night is over. There are so many people down there. Let's go down and play too."
A large crowd gathered in the square, some banging pots and pans, others breaking bowls and shouting wildly, all expressing their joy at the passing of the polar night.
The waterfall jumped onto Xueye's back and paced around the house impatiently, looking like it couldn't wait to go downstairs.
Zuo Ling and Pei Nansheng exchanged glances, and Pei Nansheng spoke first: "The fog is not right."
"You noticed it too."
The walkie-talkie rang; it was Professor Jin: "Young lady, it's dawn now, you see?"
Professor Jin's voice was unexpectedly calm.
"Yeah, I heard it even if I didn't see it. It's quite lively downstairs."
Professor Jin added, "Young lady, I feel something's wrong; the fog is strange. It's best if you don't go out for the next few days; wait a bit."
A smart person is a smart person; they can spot something amiss at a glance.
The polar night and extreme cold that last for one year and ten months are enough to make people wary of potential disasters.
"Yes, I noticed that too, thank you."
After thinking for a moment, he reminded her, "Professor Jin, the temperature is rising too fast. If possible, you should stock up on more water."
Professor Jin was alarmed: "You mean, extreme heat might be coming?"
Extreme cold and polar night have already occurred, so extreme heat is coming next; there's nothing new about it.
"Yes, very likely."
Zuo Ling replied directly that Professor Jin noticed the problem with the fog and reminded her immediately, so she had to accept this favor.
After a long silence, Professor Jin sighed, hung up the phone, and said nothing.
With none of their three sons living nearby, the elderly couple, though well-fed and clothed, still endured a difficult life.
Another round of extreme heat... The old man felt despair.
Zuo Ling turned on the air filtration system and air purifier in the house and restrained Xiao Hao, Waterfall, and Xue Ye, forbidding them from going downstairs.
Although Xiao Hao and Xue Ye were unwilling, they dared not resist.
The waterfall wasn't afraid of Zuo Ling, but it wouldn't let her go downstairs, which disturbed Zuo Ling's peace. So, Zuo Ling had no choice but to throw it into her space and let it keep company with the chickens, ducks, and geese.
The waterfall was so angry that it jumped around in the air, its little paws scratching wildly at the empty space, making a lot of noise.
Having been together for two years, Zuo Ling knew without a doubt that the waterfall was cursing her, so she let it be.
Although there was an air filtration system at home, Zuo Ling was still worried. She sprayed a lot of 84 disinfectant inside and out, but still felt uneasy, so she sprayed a lot of vinegar as well.
The room was filled with a strange smell, which made the three people and two animals sneeze repeatedly.
The yellow fog thickened day by day, starting in the early morning and not dissipating until almost noon.
Three days later, Professor Jin told me that some people in the community had experienced symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, nausea, and suffocation.
Two days later, yellow blisters appeared on some people's skin, and everyone realized something was wrong.
Property management staff, wearing gas masks and using loudspeakers, urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible, saying that the fog contained unknown toxic substances and that relevant departments were actively working to resolve the issue.
Having barely survived the extreme cold and darkness, they were then greeted by an unknown poisonous fog.
The already fragile hearts of the people were struck as if by a blunt object, causing them to suffer a mental breakdown. Some rushed out of their houses shouting and screaming.
"Poison me! Poison me quickly! Come on, come on..."
He wasn't the only one; many people, men, women, and children, came running out of the street one after another.
They roared, begging God to take them away quickly, because they no longer wanted to live a hard life.
Looking down at the madmen below, Xiao Hao, with one arm around the waterfall and the other around Xue Ye, stared wide-eyed. His sister had said the fog was poisonous, but he hadn't believed it. Turns out it was true!
He muttered to himself, "The fog really is poisonous. My sister wasn't lying to us. Luckily, we didn't go down."
The dog barked twice in the snowy night, as if responding to Xiao Hao.
The waterfall slaps it with its claws, and on a snowy night, it bares its teeth at the waterfall; the two little guys are having a tantrum.
Taking out the USB drive that the Chinese medicine shop owner had given her, Zuo Ling asked Pei Nansheng to help her look for any folk remedies suitable for treating respiratory infections.
She then organized all the medicines for treating respiratory illnesses in the space, so that she wouldn't be helpless if she got infected.
More and more people are getting sick, and the symptoms vary.
Some died from festering sores all over their bodies, some from suffocation, and some from lung infections...
Upon hearing this, Zuo Ling couldn't help but feel discouraged. No matter how well prepared one is, it's difficult to deal with all sorts of strange illnesses.
Her healing abilities are not yet reliable, and Zuo Ling dares not place her hopes on them.
They're like they're possessed, spraying disinfectant several times a day, and constantly spraying vinegar too.
Professor Jin was like a news anchor, reporting all sorts of news to her every day.
