Before the apocalypse, with GPS navigation, you'd never have to worry about where to go.
The navigation stopped working, and Zuo Ling wandered around the mountains for three days like a headless fly. She finally realized that she must have deviated from the original direction.
After resting for two days, Zuo Ling flew directly to Mount Everest, hoping that Mount Everest had not disappeared and was still the world's highest peak.
Using the compass, Zuo Ling flew southwest. When she saw a little snow on the mountaintop, she found a gentle spot on the mountainside and slowly landed.
The Northwest has a high altitude, but coming to the Southwest, which is at a similarly high altitude, I felt no discomfort at all; in fact, I experienced a cool and comfortable feeling that I didn't have in the extremely hot weather.
I stretched my muscles and relaxed my body, packed up the airplane, tidied my backpack, and headed down the mountain.
When we flew over, we saw signs of human activity somewhere and planned to go there to ask where Mount Everest was.
After walking for half a day, we arrived at a small area of felt tents. The largest felt tent was in the middle, surrounded by seven or eight smaller ones.
Two children were playing outside, and two dogs and a dozen sheep were roaming around the doorway.
Zuo Ling hadn't seen any livestock outside for a long time. There were even sheep and dogs here—it was like a paradise!
More than 1,000 meters away from the yurt, a Tibetan man emerged from inside the yurt, holding a hunting rifle, and shouted something at Zuo Ling.
Zuo Ling stopped and held her hands above her head. "I just wanted to ask for directions."
The man didn't lower his guard just because Zuo Ling was a woman. He held the gun level and mumbled something, which Zuo Ling couldn't understand at all.
She tried to slow her speech, enunciating each word clearly: "Asking...for...directions, to...Mount...Earth, understand?"
Mount Everest? The man's eyes became even more wary. Zuo Ling only had a backpack and was wearing ordinary sportswear. Going to Mount Everest? You must be joking.
While they were talking, more than a dozen people, men and women, young and old, came over one after another.
Everyone stared at Zuo Ling with curiosity, chattering in a language that Zuo Ling couldn't understand.
An elderly Tibetan man, who spoke Mandarin, asked, "Young lady, do you wish to go to Mount Everest?"
Finally, someone could speak Chinese. Zuo Ling breathed a sigh of relief and nodded vigorously: "Yes, yes, I got separated from my family. We agreed to meet up at the Zhumafeng Summit."
"How did the girl get separated from her family? And how did she end up here?"
The old man asked detailed questions.
“My younger brother was taken away by bad guys. My older brother and I went out to look for him and got separated.”
The old man's expression darkened slightly: "Young lady, you're lying."
The Tibetan man, who had just relaxed, picked up his gun again.
"Why does the old man say I'm lying?" Zuo Ling asked without changing her expression.
The old man had sharp eyes, a detached air about him that seemed to understand everything in the world: "Young lady, do you know where we are?"
Zuo Ling shook her head. That's why she came to ask for directions, precisely because she didn't know.
"In your Han Chinese terms, this place is called the dwelling place of the devil."
Where do demons dwell?
Zuo Ling was puzzled; apart from the higher altitude, she didn't feel that anything was different here.
The people who live here don't have three heads and six arms, but their complexion and physique are much better than those of people outside. They can barely be described as having a rosy complexion, though they are a bit dark-skinned.
The old man continued:
"This place is on the outskirts of Mount Everest, at an altitude of 5,000 meters. To get here, you have to pass through crevasses and avalanche zones. The weather is hot, and there are not many avalanche zones left, but the hidden crevasses are still there. Even we who live here regularly dare not move around casually, let alone you, young lady. Besides, to get here, you have to pass through a windy valley, and now is the time when the wind is strongest. Unless you flew here, you won't be able to get here."
"I see!" Zuo Ling thought to herself, "I flew here, didn't I?"
He chuckled awkwardly, "Your wisdom is profound, sir. I really did fly here."
It flew over! The crowd's expressions darkened. "You really dare to say that!"
"Airplane, you know airplane, right? I came by plane, it's parked over there..."
Zuo Ling pointed in the direction she had flown, "I took a plane for a while, they dropped me off and left. Didn't you hear the plane just now?"
The group exchanged glances, their expressions softening. They had come by plane, which made sense.
The old man pointed in a direction:
"Mount Everest is blocked. Go in that direction, and that's the highest peak."
"Thank you, sir."
He took out a handful of candies, gave them to the Tibetan children as money for asking for directions, and then Zuo Ling took his leave.
After Zuo Ling had walked away, the Tibetan man said to the old man, "That's Fengyu over there. Will she be able to get out?"
The old man shook his head indifferently, "Who knows? Natural disasters are frequent. The fact that she can come by plane means she's no ordinary person. That's not something we should worry about."
After walking in the direction the old man pointed out for a while, and seeing no more of the felt tent area, we turned back in the direction we came from.
Zuo Ling took to heart what the old man said about the ice crevasses and windy valleys. He believed that people should have more reverence for the unknown in order to live a long life.
She wanted to go back the way she came, fly over, and leap over the place that had been tested by the devil.
After carefully discerning the direction, I wanted to find the shortest route. Following the straight-line distance, I would have to pass through a large area of stone forest.
The Stone Forest is filled with jagged rocks, barren of vegetation, and utterly silent, creating a very eerie atmosphere.
Relying on her martial arts skills, Zuo Ling boldly walked inside. After walking for more than ten minutes, she didn't feel anything was scary and laughed at herself for being too cautious.
Just as I relaxed, a chill ran down my spine, and something unexpected happened.
Zuo Ling flashed into the space immediately, her pupils dilating suddenly. The stone, the size of a child's head, was sliced into pieces by the wind blades and flew away.
Holy crap! The old man told her there was a Wind Valley nearby, but he didn't tell her where it was. If it weren't for her spatial cheat device, she'd be a pile of minced meat by now, damn it!
