We've recruited so many times, but this is the first time we haven't been able to recruit enough people.
The base has fewer than 30,000 employees, which was already short-handed. Zheng Yecheng led the way in asking the factory for more workers, which caused a lot of rumors to spread and made many people suspicious of the food factory.
Dai Jianzhong had a headache. In the past, people would bow and scrape when they saw him, and they would treat him like an ancestor in order to get into the food factory.
But now, all I see is wariness.
No, we have to talk to the higher-ups. If this continues, the food factory will have to close down.
While sending people to search for the missing underlings, they continued to recruit workers.
When Zuo Ling and her two companions arrived at the job recruitment site, they rescued Zheng Yecheng, but it was just a minor incident.
I overheard someone asking, "Are there any holidays? Can we go home in the middle?"
Dai Jianzhong glanced sideways at the person asking the question:
"Brother, do you think this is the end of the world? You get to work five days a week, 9 to 5, and even have paid vacations all year round. I'd love to have that too. Don't you know what the end of the world is? You're lucky if you have food to eat and a roof over your head."
The man said timidly:
"If you can't give me a holiday, I can at least ask for leave. I have elderly parents and young children at home. If I don't go home for a long time, my family will worry, and I won't feel at ease at home either."
This was based on rumors heard a few days ago. Seeing more and more people gathering around, Dai Jianzhong knew that without a clear answer, it would be difficult to recruit enough people.
"The work location for this recruitment is not at the base, but to build a factory in a distant place. It is estimated that you will not be able to come back for a year or two. We will not force you, so please think it over carefully."
Silence fell over the room; no one answered for a moment.
Dai Jianzhong was secretly anxious. The higher-ups needed 200 people, but they had only recruited 87 yesterday, leaving them more than 100 short.
If they don't recruit enough people, they'll anger their superiors and have their path as a superhuman come to an end!
Gritting his teeth, he dragged a large basket out from under the seat:
"Considering that it is far from home and not easy for everyone to come back, the factory will give each newly recruited worker 5 whole grain cakes."
Distributing multigrain pancakes? The crowd stirred.
Dai Jianzhong held up a dark, unrecognizable flatbread and spun it around proudly, saying, "See? Five pieces for everyone."
A single pancake represents a life, and many people salivate, but then, thinking of the rumors... they hesitate to go any further.
"We'll sign up."
Zuo Ling dragged his two brothers to the front of the crowd.
Dai Jianzhong's eyes lit up. He felt that the three of them looked familiar. Yesterday, his attention was entirely on Zheng Yecheng, and the three of them looked like beggars, so he didn't pay any attention to them at all.
He laughed and said:
"Okay, okay, okay, you're all from the same family? You're quite robust, I'll give you two extra pancakes."
We can give you more!
Everyone immediately regretted it, blaming themselves for being too slow and letting Zuo Ling's family speak first.
With Zuo Ling's family taking the lead, many others who wanted more pancakes followed suit and signed up.
Dai Jianzhong went all out, offering half a piece or an extra piece of bread to win people over, and soon enough, he had gathered 200 people.
Those who weren't selected looked dejected.
Dai Jianzhong sneered, "These poor bastards, bought off with a few pieces of bread. They deserve to die young."
Clap your hands: "You have two hours to say goodbye to your families. After two hours, come back here and a car will take you away."
His face suddenly changed. "If you took the pancakes and then changed your mind about going, just return them. If you don't want to go and don't want to return the pancakes, well, I don't take things from people so easily. Alright, everyone disperse."
Concerned about his missing younger brother, Dai Jianzhong gave his subordinates a few instructions and hurriedly left.
With nowhere else to go, Zuo Ling and the other two waited where they were.
A few who hadn't registered thought that if someone didn't go, they might be able to fill in and wait in the same spot.
Two hours later, all 200 people returned without exception, while the few who hadn't registered went home disappointed.
Dai Jianzhong returned at the last minute, but the missing younger brother was still not found.
How could several grown-up people just disappear? My mind was in a complete mess. Afraid of arousing suspicion, I lowered my eyes and put on a calm and composed demeanor.
The vehicle that took Zuo Ling and the others was a Dongfeng truck.
Two hundred people were crammed together like piglets, standing shoulder to shoulder, and if it weren't for the railings on all sides, they would have been pushed off.
Pei Nansheng and Xiao Hao stood on either side of Zuo Ling, creating a small space for her.
With so many people, the air quality deteriorates, and many people who lack access to water have clothes that haven't been washed in ages, resulting in a sour and foul smell everywhere.
Sniffing, I realized that the smell on my own family members wasn't much better than anyone else's.
Sigh! Just bear with it, it'll be over soon.
The road was rugged, and after more than four hours of driving, we were almost shaken to pieces before the car finally stopped in a mountain hollow.
The surrounding area was desolate, with not a trace of human habitation. The group muttered to themselves, "This doesn't seem like a place to build a factory."
Zuo Ling and her brother exchanged glances; all three of them could see the clouds and mist halfway up the mountain.
Dai Jianzhong told everyone to get off the bus.
"The bus can't go any further, there's still a way to go, everyone keep up."
Despite the challenges of climbing mountains and overcoming obstacles, Zuo Ling and her brother, in their excellent physical condition, felt no discomfort.
Others couldn't manage; they hadn't had enough to eat for years, and their bodies were completely weak. They were panting heavily after walking for less than fifteen minutes.
A woman was so thin she could be blown away by the wind; her steps were unsteady, and she was panting like a bellows, yet she still gritted her teeth and persevered in climbing upwards.
Feeling sorry for her, Zuo Ling handed her a small bottle of water: "Have some water and rest."
The woman was taken aback. In this apocalyptic world, people are cold and indifferent, and few offer a helping hand. So when someone suddenly shows her some warmth, she feels strange.
Zuo Ling put it in her hand, smiled, and continued climbing.
They hadn't gone far when they heard the woman exclaim in surprise.
Turning around, I saw the woman being pushed to the ground, and several people were fighting over the bottle of water that Zuo Ling had given me.
