On a deserted island, a lone tent stands.
Beside the tent, the firewood had burned out, and most of the ashes in the brazier had been blown away by the wind. Unable to withstand the wind, the brazier collided with the sand and stones, making a clanging sound.
The sound of the waves disturbed Ning Qiang's sweet dream. He stretched lazily, crawled out of his sleeping bag, exhaled the stale air that had accumulated all night, and sighed, "Ah, the big bed at home is still the most comfortable."
I didn't return to the base last night; I was supposed to spend three days on the deserted island observing mourning for my uncle.
Three days is the limit he can stay outside; any longer and things might change at the base.
The news of his uncle's death has not yet been made public, and Ning Qiang felt a headache coming on when he thought about it.
Next, there's still a tough battle ahead. The uncles and brothers in the clan aren't so easy to deal with; they've probably already noticed something amiss.
Rub your face vigorously, don't be afraid of anything, we'll deal with whatever comes our way.
After getting dressed and crawling out of the tent, Ning Qiang was stunned.
On the ground, the blade drew a line of large characters: "Gone, until we meet again."
How heartless! Ning Qiang was so angry that he erased the writing and stomped on it repeatedly in a frenzy.
He had originally wanted to talk to Zuo Ling about staying. If she was willing to stay, he would have three more powerful ability users to help him. What would those Ning family members who were dissatisfied have to offer in the face of that?
It's over, it's over. What a heartless and cruel woman. She doesn't care about our past friendship at all.
My uncle asked me to take care of her, but I spit on him. I won't take care of her, I won't take care of her... Ning Qiang vented his anger like a child.
Two days later, the family returned to the base. Before they even got home, Qian Yu and He Guiqi rushed over.
"Sister, you're finally back! If you hadn't come back, we would have put up missing person notices."
The remaining growth hormone had run out, and although the climate was not as harsh as before, the two still dared not be careless in the slightest.
Zuo Ling was in a bad mood, so she gave them what they wanted, chatted briefly, and then sent them away.
The two had just left when Bai Hongwei arrived.
Thinking of that guess, Zuo Ling's expression turned somewhat indifferent.
"How did it go?"
Ever since Zuo Ling and her brother left, Bai Hongwei had been on edge. He had witnessed the terrifying power of the blood-sucking vines and was terrified that Zuo Ling and her brother wouldn't be a match for that monstrous thing. The performance report sent back by 003 was written like a narrative, completely omitting the details of the battle that he was most concerned about.
"It's alright."
Zuo Ling gave a perfunctory three-word reply.
Eager to return to his post, Xiao Hao said goodbye to his older siblings and ran off.
Zuo Ling called out to him, "Take some food with you before you go."
Xiao Hao waved his hand, "I'm not bringing it."
His sister always asked him to bring food to his comrades. Xiao Hao felt like he was exchanging food for friendship, and some people did try to get close to him because of the food, which made him very uncomfortable.
I've made up my mind that I won't bring him along if I can avoid it in the future. He'll gladly accept those who want to be with him, but those who want to be with him just for food can go to hell.
The dog couldn't bear to leave its little master and chased after him. Ah Si, arrogant and disdainful of being a follower, watched the commotion with one foot in and one foot out of the door.
Just as Bai Hongwei was about to hug the waterfall, it gushed out.
The little guy was in sync with Zuo Ling; if the woman didn't want to talk to him, he wouldn't either.
"Brother, you stay with him. I'm tired, I'm going to rest first."
Leaving the two grown men behind, Zuo Ling turned and went back into the house.
"What... happened to her?" Bai Hongwei asked Pei Nansheng.
"I'm just tired."
With doubts in mind, Pei Nansheng looked for similarities on Bai Hongwei's face—eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips… the more he looked, the more similar they seemed.
Bai Hongwei felt uneasy under his gaze. "Is there something wrong with my face?"
Pei Nansheng smiled and said, "No."
The two exchanged a few casual words. Bai Hongwei tried several times to ask how they had broken through that forbidden zone, but Pei Nansheng stopped him each time.
"By the way, we saw He Guizi. Why did he go to the Ning family base? Is he an undercover agent?"
Pei Nansheng asked the question knowing the answer already.
Bai Hongwei felt frustrated; only a fool would send He Guizi as an undercover agent.
My friend of over ten years turned out to be someone sent by the Ning family!
Bai Hongwei returned home dejectedly.
Two months have passed in the blink of an eye.
The temperature difference is better than before, and people often find tender shoots sprouting on the mountains. People spread the news as if they had discovered a new continent.
Even the smallest changes have given everyone hope for the future.
As evening fell, three men and one woman arrived at the base gate amidst the swirling snowflakes.
One of the young men had a little boy, about 3 or 4 years old, carried in a bamboo basket on his back.
Having not seen a newborn for many years, the guards couldn't help but take a few extra glances.
The child is fair-skinned and quiet, with a pair of beautiful, bright eyes that are very endearing.
"Name, place of origin, age".
"Wang Feng, Shuzhou, 28."
"Liu Shulin, Shuzhou, 27."
"Liu Shusen, Shuzhou, 32."
"Liu Guojun, Shuzhou, 45."
"Shu Prefecture also has an official base, so why is it here?"
“We came out early and made a living in the country of elephants. When that collapsed, we heard that the Chinese base was here, so we came.”
The registrar was a woman in her forties. She glanced at Wang Feng and Liu Shulin, then asked:
"Are you the child's parents? How old is the child? What's their name?"
"Yes, yes, he's three and a half years old. We don't have a formal name yet. We usually call him Bao'er. Please register him as Liu Bao'er first."
Wang Feng and Liu Shulin remained silent, but Liu Guojun spoke first.
"You are so lucky to have such a beautiful child. We haven't seen a newborn here for years."
He tossed out several cards: "Take these, don't lose them, replacing them will deduct contribution points."
