Chapter 42 Meeting the People I Was meant to Meet

Ji Yueyao stared listlessly out the window. It was completely dark now, and their car had been pulled over to a flat area. Using the moonlight, she glanced outside but saw nothing but weeds. She pursed her lips and turned back to stare blankly at the car's fuel gauge.

"What's wrong?" Yu Tianfang hadn't fallen asleep yet. He casually opened the window next to him, and a cool breeze blew in, making him feel so comfortable that he wanted to groan.

"Hmm..." Ji Yueyao thought for a moment before pointing to the fuel gauge and saying, "This place... I mean, where do you fill up if you want to refuel?"

"There's a dedicated refueling station." Yu Tianfang looked outside, absentmindedly staring at some small insects drifting by. "Didn't you know?"

"I really don't know," Ji Yueyao admitted frankly, since she wasn't born and raised here.

Yu Tianfang nodded, yawned, and then said, "When the apocalypse first broke out, some people began to rapidly seize oil resources. Later, as our lives gradually stabilized, these people gradually developed into a force, which we call the Black Race."

"Black race?" Ji Yueyao was confused. "Why are they called black race? Is it because oil is black?"

“Oil comes in many colors.” Yu Tianfang raised an eyebrow and looked at Ji Yueyao with a light smile. “There’s red, golden yellow… Well, the lighter the color, the better the quality of the oil. That’s basic knowledge, Captain.”

"Well, I know I don't know," Ji Yueyao said, scratching her head somewhat embarrassedly. She really hadn't known anything about these things. "Then why do we call them black people?"

"Because their headquarters are in the Black Zone." Reaching out from the side, Yu Tianfang took a few sips of water.

"The Dark Zone?" Ji Yueyao thought for a moment. She had seen some geographical locations in the book "The End of the World." The Dark Zone seemed to be a place where humans could not live. The climate, air, and soil environment there were simply not suitable for human habitation. "Isn't that place unsuitable for human habitation?"

“But those guys somehow found a way to live there, deterring some people who covet oil. That’s why we call them Black People.” Yu Tianfang closed the window, seemingly preparing to take a nap. “Every six months they send people out to trade oil with major powers in various countries, which is why we have oil to use now… Alright, Captain, I need to sleep for a while, otherwise I won’t have the energy to drive tomorrow.”

"Okay, get some rest. I'll keep watch outside tonight." Ji Yueyao nodded. She was also a little sleepy. She glanced at the people behind her, all of whom looked drowsy. Ji Yueyao put her backpack by the window, yawned slightly, but did not fall asleep. The wilderness at night was quite dangerous. Someone had to stay awake to keep watch outside, otherwise they wouldn't even know when they were surrounded by the aliens.

These creatures feed on flesh and blood; if I were to fall into their mouths, they probably wouldn't even leave me with bone fragments.

She took stock of the weapons they possessed. There were six of them in total. Apart from Yu Tianfang's weapon, which she didn't know, the rest of them each had their own unique weapon.

Her weapon was a dagger, because it was the one she was most familiar with. Yao Lin's weapon was a ghost-head knife. Well, Ji Yueyao admitted that only Yao Lin could lift such a heavy knife. Lin Xuan's weapons were two pistols, which were said to be very expensive. Kaqi and Xu Lingnan used ordinary guns. Kaqi was a beginner and seemed a little rusty.

Ji Yueyao wiped his dagger, then stared blankly outside. When he got sleepy, he would drink some water, and then continue to stare blankly.

Fortunately, the night passed peacefully, and the next day the group began their bumpy journey again.

"We're now in the inner part of the wasteland, so we need to be on guard." Yu Tianfang glanced at the map in his hand and then turned the steering wheel.

"Yes." Ji Yueyao nodded. The wasteland in this world is very large. If you wanted to cross it, it would take more than a month to drive across. At the same time, there are many alien creatures living in the wasteland, making it extremely dangerous.

"Captain, you should rest for a while. We'll keep an eye on things," Lin Xuan said softly, looking at Ji Yueyao's dark circles with some concern.

Ji Yueyao nodded with relief, then leaned against her backpack and fell asleep. She hadn't slept all night, and the car ride had been bumpy, so she was indeed exhausted.

Ji Yueyao was abruptly shaken awake by Kaqi.

"What's wrong, Aqi?" Ji Yueyao was suddenly shaken awake, still a little dazed. She touched her neck and couldn't help but grit her teeth; her neck was so sore...

"Captain, look!" Kaqi patted Ji Yueyao frantically, almost knocking her out of her wits.

"What are you looking at?" Ji Yueyao looked over helplessly, only to find that there were at least ten cars driving next to their car!

Ji Yueyao was taken aback at first, thinking it was someone else from the Xiyu base. But then she realized that didn't make sense. They had agreed to go their separate ways, so they definitely wouldn't have gathered here again.

Squinting closely, Ji Yueyao noticed a symbol on each of the cars next to her. The symbol was... She reached out and gripped the backpack behind her warily. It was a golden star, the military insignia.

Why are the military here?

Ji Yueyao frowned slightly. Zhong Jue hadn't mentioned any other forces involved. If there were other forces... then the danger level of this mission would have to be reassessed.

The military had clearly noticed their vehicle long ago. A car blocked their way, and Yu Tianfang quickly slammed on the brakes. The force of the impact caused the people inside the car to sway.

"What do they mean?" Kachi was furious.

Yao Lin pursed his lips. "What could it mean? If one side goes, they can get more supernatural meteorites."

"Hey, where are you guys headed?" Ling Yang jumped out of the car in front of him, peeked through the driver's side window, and grinned lewdly.

When Ling Yang noticed Ji Yueyao sitting in the passenger seat, he took a step back in realization. "You're from the Xiyu Base, so you're going to find the supernatural meteorite, huh?"

Ji Yueyao had never met the person in front of her before, but since the other party knew her clearly... Ji Yueyao could only think of two possibilities: either they had planted someone in the Xiyu base, or they had seen her in the rookie competition. Either way, it could be inferred that the person in front of her was not of low status.

Ji Yueyao was half right, but Ling Yang first met her when she had just arrived in this world.

“Well, I think you should introduce yourselves before asking us questions, at least it’s basic etiquette.” Ji Yueyao sighed inwardly, forcibly suppressing her unease, opened the car door and got out. She felt a sense of oppression sitting in the car.
