Chapter Nineteen: Wei Kang's Father

"Throw away your naive compassion. This place doesn't need your cowardly mentality!" Wei Kang glanced at the stunned Ji Yueyao, released his grip on her arm, and softened his tone slightly. "Don't become a burden to others until you have enough strength."

Ji Yueyao looked at Wei Kang and followed behind him. The screams of women were gone, replaced by a deathly silence. But only she knew that her heart was far from calm, and she couldn't calm down no matter what she did.

She never thought about these things; perhaps she had been running away from this world without any democracy, a world where might makes right.

For the past month since she arrived here, she has been treating this place as if it were her old home, constantly telling herself and hypnotizing herself to understand that this place is no different from where she used to live. But now, perhaps she really does understand.

This is a different world; this is the end of the world.

Wei Kang glanced back at Ji Yueyao, who remained silent, his face expressionless. In truth, he didn't understand why he was helping Ji Yueyao. He had initially really disliked her, after all, women should do what women are supposed to do. But now... perhaps he had come to regard her as... a partner, this naive woman.

Lost in thought, Ji Yueyao had unknowingly followed Wei Kang to his residence.

"Is this your home?" Ji Yueyao asked, looking at the small house in front of her. Although the house was not big, it was roughly the size of a one-bedroom apartment, quite different from her small dormitory.

Wei Kang nodded and opened the door for Ji Yueyao. "You can rest on the sofa outside. I'll go brew the medicine."

"Brewing medicine?" Ji Yueyao followed curiously inside and saw Wei Kang pick up a bag and walk to the side. He then squatted down and started cooking something, and the smell of Chinese medicine gradually wafted out. Ji Yueyao didn't like the smell, so she took a step back and sat on the sofa next to him.

"Are there still Chinese medicines in the apocalypse?" Ji Yueyao asked curiously.

"Yes, but these pre-apocalyptic medicinal herbs are very rare, and you need a lot of points to exchange for them."

"Then... do you have enough points?" Ji Yueyao noticed that there was only a bed and a sofa in the room, nothing else, and it didn't look like a wealthy place at all.

“My dad has enough points.” Wei Kang stood up, pulled over a small stool and sat down, staring intently at the medicine being brewed. Although he looked normal after a long day, he could barely keep his eyes open.

Ji Yueyao sat on the sofa and looked at Wei Kang's profile. She noticed that he was yawning with his eyes squinted. So this guy was also very sleepy. After thinking for a moment, a new question popped into her mind.

Wei Kang is such a strange person; Ji Yueyao's thirst for knowledge about him has been steadily increasing.

"Since your dad has enough points, why are you still working at the bar so late?"

Wei Kang slightly opened his eyes, looked up through the window at the silent night sky, and said, "Because the points are still not enough."

Perhaps she was mistaken. Ji Yueyao sat up straight. She thought she had just seen this guy... cry. Was it because he didn't have enough points?

"Um... Wei Kang, are you feeling unwell? Why are you brewing Chinese medicine?" Ji Yueyao only now realized that she didn't know why Wei Kang was brewing medicine.

"It wasn't me, it was my dad." Wei Kang lowered his head, poured the medicine in his hand into a bowl, then got up and went into the small room next door.

Huh? Are there any other rooms there? The door to this room had been closed the whole time, so she hadn't noticed.

Ji Yueyao also stood up. Since Wei Kang's father was also there, shouldn't she go and say hello?

Following Wei Kang inside, Ji Yueyao immediately spotted the man leaning against the bed reading a book. He was a man without legs, with only one arm. He looked somewhat old, but his eyes had a gentle and comforting light.

"Huh? Kang, did you bring your girlfriend back?" Wei Jing smiled gently at Ji Yueyao, who was standing at the door in a daze. He saw only surprise in the girl's eyes, not disgust or disdain.

She seems like a good girl.

"Woman, who let you in? Don't you have any manners at all!" Wei Kang was stunned, stood up and glared at Ji Yueyao.

"Hey, shouldn't you come in and say hello when there's an elder here? Do you even know what manners are?" Ji Yueyao retorted instinctively, only realizing after a moment that she was still standing in front of the man's father. Without saying anything more, she glanced at Wei Kang and said to Wei Jing honestly, "Hello, Uncle, I'm Wei Kang's partner from the training area. My name is Ji Yueyao."

Although the fact that Wei Kang's father was disabled startled her, it didn't matter anymore.

"Hello." Wei Jing looked at Ji Yueyao very gently. "This is the first time A-Kang has brought a friend home."

What a gentle person! Ji Yueyao looked at Wei Jingwen's gentle face, and then secretly glanced at Wei Kang's arrogant face. They didn't look like father and son at all!

"Woman, you're in my way!" Wei Kang looked at the empty medicine bowl in his hand, then stood up and glared at Ji Yueyao. "Get out of here right now! I need to rest, even if you don't."

"You!" Ji Yueyao glared back at Wei Kang, but since she was in front of Wei Kang's father, she couldn't say anything more.

However, Wei Jing couldn't stand it anymore. "Kang, how many times have I told you to be gentle with girls?"

"Dad, does she look like a woman to you?" Wei Kang glanced at Ji Yueyao, his disdain quite obvious.

"..." Ji Yueyao was so angry that she was speechless.

"And you were very gentle with that woman, but she still ran off with another man after you got injured." Wei Kang lowered his eyes, concealing all his emotions, and whispered to Wei Jing.

Wei Jing was stunned for a moment, a flash of disappointment crossing his eyes. He looked up at Ji Yueyao, still appearing gentle, but it was not hard to see that his mood had indeed become somewhat sad. "Ji Yueyao, right? I'm really sorry. A-Kang has become like this ever since his mother left. Sometimes the things he says are really offensive."

His mother left? Ji Yueyao thought about what Wei Kang had just said. Could it be that Wei Kang's mother ran away with another man after his father was injured?

She nodded, unsure of what to say at this moment.

"Alright, it's getting late. I know how tough the training area is. You two should go and rest." Wei Jing seemed to have no energy left to continue the conversation, and waved his hand to signal Ji Yueyao and Wei Kang to leave first.
