In the past, he truly had no fear, he should have died when he was six. Since then, he didn’t particularly care about his own life, what’s life and death to him?
The fact that he had come so far, strategically planning and camping every step of the way, through countless dangerous paths filled with crises, any person afraid of death would not have been able to reach today.
He had gained more and more power, until the chaos amongst the princes for the throne, where he helped the Sixth Prince ascend to the throne, hence acquiring the enormous power of reigning supreme under the heaven. Despite this, he didn’t feel like he had gained anything. He still felt alone and lonely.
In the past, he didn’t know what loneliness or solitude was because he had never possesed such feelings. But since he met her, he had greedily wanted to escape from loneliness, wanted to have her, wanted to live well.
Ji Xinhe’s heart seemed to tremble slightly, warmth flowing within her heart, warming her up.
"You kept saying you wanted to marry me, but I still know nothing about you. Mu Chu, can I trust you?" Xinhe looked at him without evasion or flinch, staring directly into his eyes, for the first time openly acknowledging his intentions.
This man unexpectedly invaded her life and took up an important place in her heart, but she was hesitant because she knew nothing about him. If she didn’t have feelings for him, she would rather avoid the situation and choose not to ask questions.
But she was concerned. Because she cared, she felt unsettled. The uncertainty of his intentions towards her, the longevity of his commitment, and his words of today, whether they meant anything.
Mu Houchu looked at her, his eyes unusually serious and formal. "Xin He, I don’t consider myself a good man. If anyone else would ask me this question, I wouldn’t even bother to console them. But you don’t know how important you are to me. Currently, I’m involved in some affairs, and I don’t want to entangle you in such dangerous situations. After I settle everything, I won’t hide anything from you." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Xinhe lightly smiled, "Then I’ll trust you."
She was innately suspicious and sensitive, not an easy person to trust. But this man, he seemed to always have this charm that made her want to trust him.
Mu Houchu, who had been holding his breath, finally relaxed slightly and stroked her little face. "Good girl, I won’t be in danger this time. I will go and return soon. But you have to stay at home and don’t run around. After tonight, there may be big trouble ahead."
Xinhe was momentarily stunned, not quite understanding what he means by big trouble. But still, she nodded, "You must be careful."
"Mhm." Mu Houchu leans over, kisses her forehead and disappears into the night.
——
Xinhe didn’t sleep a wink that night. Mu Houchu had gone to the iron mine. Despite him saying he will be fine, she still worried about him and managed to stay awake the entire night.
She didn’t know about Mu Houchu’s identity. But she can guess, his status wasn’t low. But he was also a wanted criminal by the government, that seems contradictory.
Regardless, she didn’t want him to be in trouble, regardless of his identity.
Until the sky began to lighten, she finally succumbed to tiredness, fell asleep with her head on the desk. But even in sleep, she was restless, her eyebrows furrowed, and her complexion wasn’t good.
The room door was gently pushed open without her knowing. The person came in worn and tired. Seeing her asleep on the table, he sighed softly. He approached her softly, picked her up, and put her on the bed, covering her with a quilt. As he was about to walk away, she wakes up and quickly grabs his hand.
"Are you awake? Did I wake you up?"
She clung tightly to his hand, completely unwilling to let go.
"You’re back?" Ji Xinhe breathed a sigh of relief and her previously knitted brows relaxed.
Mu Houchu could feel her tension, which made him feel some heartache. He sat back down next to the bed, allowing her to hold his hand, then waxed her hair with his free hand, whispering, "I’m back."
He knew she would wait for him. He had already noticed it last time he left. If he didn’t tell her about his plans today, she would probably get angry again. So, he decided to tell her to avoid causing any misunderstanding or upset.
But to his surprise, she waited up for him the whole night.
"You can’t wait up like this in the future."
"Why not?"
"Because it hurts me," Mu Houchu said softly.
Ji Xinhe’s cheeks turned red. "Who’s waiting for you? I just couldn’t sleep."
"If you’re not waiting for me, then why are you holding my hand so tightly?" Mu Houchu looked at the hand she was clinging onto.
Only then did Ji Xinhe react, she quickly let go of his hand, holding her neck stiffly, "I grabbed something randomly, I thought it was a chicken leg!"
Mu Houchu couldn’t help but laugh, grabbed her small hand, "I like you holding me, no matter what you take me for, I’m willing."
Ji Xinhe’s face flushed. She never had any romantic experience in her two life spans. She didn’t know how to react to the heart-beating feeling, let alone how to react when a man who made her feel that way held her hand.
In other words, it was really damaging to her reputation.
"Why did you take so long?" Ji Xinhe simply changed the subject. The hand, held in his, was hot, but surprisingly comfortable and didn’t want to pull away.
Mu Houchu sensed her acceptance. A deeper smile reached the corners of his lips as he pulled her into his arms. "Because things were a bit troublesome. But thankfully, everything went pretty smoothly. As I said, I’m very afraid of dying now so I will take good care of myself. Don’t worry."
"Okay..."
"But there’s one more difficulty," Mu Houchu suddenly said.
"What difficulty?" Ji Xinhe’s heart tightened as she quickly raised her head.
"Tonight, not just Lian’an Town, I fear even the entire Lanshan City will start a more rigorous search and capture operation targeting me. Although last time, when I said I was your husband, I easily fooled them. But it was fake after all. This time, with a more rigorous and detailed search, what would happen if the officials found a loophole?"
Ji Xinhe’s eyes widened, "What have you done!?"
Mu Houchu looked at her, seriously saying, "It’s less of what I’ve done and more of how to solve the current problem."
"So what can we do?"
"At present, I’m afraid there is only one way."
"What way?"
"Act it out for real," Mu Houchu rubbed her little face, his eyes filled with radiant laughter, as bright as the spring sun in March.
