Why would the Wang Family come to the capital city? It’s title of royal merchant had been revoked, the family was in decline, yet they audaciously make their way into the capital?
Could it be that the Wang Family has come here for her?
Ji Xinhe remembered the assassination attempt arranged by the Wang family at the Lantern Festival in Lian’an Town, and her brows furrowed slightly. If they were indeed coming for her, weren’t they being a little too persistent?
Ji Xinhe clenched the handkerchief tucked in her sleeve, her countenance slightly darkening. She hadn’t had time to investigate it yet, and the Wang Family had already arrived, what was she going to do now?
The crux of the matter was that there was too little time. She had been in the capital for less than a month and hadn’t even found her footing yet. To investigate the handkerchief was not going to be easy. Moreover, the handkerchief was associated with the Noble Royal Palace; it was not easy for her to take action.
Beyond this handkerchief, there were no leads. There were neither too many nor too few powerful people in the capital. Where should she start searching from? Blindly searching for answers was something she could only leave up to luck.
Perhaps she could wait until she had established a certain level of power and foundation in the capital, to enter the circle of the elites, then she might be able to easily investigate. However, it would take too long to wait for that day to arrive.
Developing a business isn’t an easy task. Her Qinghe workshop was growing rapidly due to its win-win partnership with Guilin Residence, essentially rising to prominence overnight, but there was still some way to go before establishing a solid foundation.
She didn’t have much time left.
As for today’s plan...
Suddenly, Ji Xinhe turned around, looking in the direction where the Wang Family’s horse carriage had left. Her eyes shimmered slightly. Perhaps there was a high chance of success if she could make a pre-emptive strike before they came to her.
Ji Xinhe immediately hired a horse carriage and instructed the coachman, "Follow the carriage ahead."
"Alright, here we go!"
The horse carriage departed rapidly, Ji Xinhe followed the Wang Family’s horse carriage closely until they stopped. Only then did she pay the coachman and quietly went to take a look.
The Wang Family originally owned a luxurious mansion in the capital city, which Ji Xinhe had once passed by when conducting business. Although it was unoccupied, it was still extremely extravagant. It was a place that exuded an overpowering odour of money from just one look.
But this time the Wang Family came to the capital city, they did not go directly to that mansion. Instead, they chose to stay in a low-key, simple small mansion.
Ji Xinhe’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. The Wang Family’s current behaviour seemed as if they might have returned to the capital city in secret. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Fortunately, she happened to see them on the street today. Otherwise, had the Wang Family secretly returned to the capital city without her being aware, wouldn’t she suffer a major loss?
Ji Xinhe didn’t feel like thinking more about it. After mentally taking note of the location of the Wang Family’s small mansion, she quietly left the area.
Upon returning home, she summoned Fuquan.
"Miss, what can I do for you?" Fuquan bowed and asked.
Ji Xinhe said, "Put the workshop’s affairs on hold for a few days and let Li Saner cover for you. I need you to do something for me."
Fuquan immediately understood that this was a task specifically assigned to him because his mistress trusted and valued him. Without hesitation, he nodded, "Just give the word, Miss. I’ll do my best!"
"I need you to keep an eye on a family. Be careful and don’t alert them. If there is any movement, no matter how small, report back to me immediately. Do you understand?"
"Rest assured, Miss. I’ll get it done."
"You’ve always been quite clever. Be extra attentive with this task, especially towards the master and the madam of that house. Take note of where they go and who they meet, watch them carefully." Ji Xinhe instructed.
"Yes."
With that, Fuquan hurried off.
No sooner had Fuquan left than Mu Houchu arrived.
Ji Xinhe didn’t feel like turning him away now, telling him to leave would be in vain anyway. This man was becoming increasingly thick-skinned, and especially since she couldn’t beat him, it was truly frustrating!
Ji Xinhe kept her head low, continuing to look at her account book without raising her head.
Mu Houchu’s Footsteps were deliberately loud, but she seemed as though she hadn’t heard them. Mu Houchu wasn’t annoyed, he simply walked to her side, bent over slightly, and asked in a soft voice, "What are you looking at?"
Ji Xinhe gave him a strange look. This man was acting quite peculiar today.
It wasn’t just his face beaming with smiles that was unusual, even his steps were unusually light. Could it be that he had gotten a raise?
"What’s making you smile so big?"
Mu Houchu curled his lips into a smile, "Nothing, I just feel happy looking at you."
Ji Xinhe rolled her eyes, she did not believe him!
Mu Houchu leisurely picked up his tea cup and took a sip. His Majesty had already decreed the marriage between the Duan Family and Le Yuanhou’s Mansion was to take place, and it could no longer be changed, he was certainly delighted.
By getting rid of the extremely annoying Duan Lan, he felt a lot more relaxed.
Ji Xinhe felt it was strange, but she didn’t know why and didn’t bother to ask more, instead she simply carried on checking her account book.
Ling Feng quickly sent over new official documents, and placed them on the desk. Mu Houchu then promptly occupied her desk to read these reports.
Occasionally, he would raise his head and see her at the round table, her expressions alternating between frowning and joy. Her delicate fingers moved swiftly across the abacus beads, and her eyes seemed to light up as she worked the abacus, as if these beads were as precious as money in her eyes.
This woman, the thing she probably loves most in her life is money.
Mu Houchu suddenly felt that this kind of life was very peaceful. For many years, he was always alone in his study, facing a pile of complex issues and dense official documents, all because he enjoyed tranquility, or maybe it was due to being accustomed to loneliness since childhood. But watching her by his side now, the crisp sound of the abacus beads ringing out from time to time, he felt like those past years had been too solitary, too bland.
The day gradually darkened, the flickering candlelight gave off a hint of warmth, the room was tranquil. Mu Houchu thought, if time could keep moving at this pace, it wouldn’t be too bad.
——
A few days later, Fuquan returned to give a report.
"How did it go? Have you discovered any news?" Ji Xinhe was a little nervous but also looking forward to his reply. She felt that the Wang Family coming to the capital city secretly and taking such a big risk wasn’t just to kill time in the small mansion, they must have some sort of plan.
Ji Xinhe wanted to take this opportunity to find out who the Wang Family was in contact with. The Wang Family was likely related to this handkerchief since they were so sensitive towards it, and their constant pursuit implied an even deeper secret. She boldly guessed that there were people behind the Wang Family!
Fuquan quickly replied, "The past few days, I’ve been stationed outside the Wang Family’s place. They did not step out until today, when Master Wang quietly left in a light grey horse carriage."
"Where did he go?" Ji Xinhe’s eyes lit up.
"I quietly followed him and noted that the carriage went straight into the back door of Le Yuanhou’s Mansion!"
