Ji Dong opened his eyes in surprise: "Ah? Surely Lady Ding won’t let us off, right?"
Ji Xinhe snorted coldly: "Who cares if she forgives us or not? If she demands today, she will demand tomorrow, who got her into this habit? If it wasn’t for the guests present, I would have tossed them out already, saving some face for myself."
"I should be going, not you. I’m afraid you’ll be bullied if you have to go. " Ji Dong hurriedly said.
"Brother, you clear the dishes and chopsticks. I’m suited for this. When have I ever been bullied by them?" Ji Xinhe blinked, then quickly ran out.
Thinking about it, Ji Dong realized that his sister had indeed changed a lot since she woke up.
Ji Xinhe arrived at the kitchen, took out the two steamed buns, and placed them in a small basket. She immediately headed for the main room.
Since Ji Xiaobao was looking forward to the meat and vegetables that Ji Xinhe was preparing, he hadn’t eaten yet and was eagerly waiting. No matter how persuasively Ji Dashan coaxed him, he refused to eat, disdainfully pushed away the coarse buns: "No, I won’t eat this! I want to eat meat, I won’t eat this stuff!"
Ji Xinhe had just reached the door when she heard this. She sneered in her heart and strolled in: "Dad, mom, I brought some food for you."
Ji Xiaobao’s eyes lit up and he was about to rush up when he was abruptly pulled back by Lady Ding. Looking down at Ji Xinhe, she said, "You took so long to deliver the food. Did you do it on purpose? You conscienceless thing, you’ve left your parents hungry for so long, while enjoying a feast at home, you are very pleased indeed!"
Ji Xinhe, indifferent to the criticism, replied with a smile: "Didn’t the gathering just end? After all, he’s the son of the village head. How could we neglect him? Don’t you agree, mom?"
Lady Ding snorted disdainfully. Although she seemed to not care, her hand moved quickly to snatch the basket in Ji Xinhe’s hand. Ji Xiaobao, starving like a ghost, rushed forward: "Mine, mine, no one else is allowed to eat!"
However, when he untied the little floral cloth on the basket and saw two coarse buns inside, his face fell instantly. He pointed his finger at Ji Xinhe and started ranting: "Damn you, Ji Xinhe! You dare to trick me with buns, no wonder mom calls you a mean and heartless girl. Give me my red-braised pork, give it back!"
Ji Xiaobao said, angry and ready to rush up and fight.
Ji Xinhe suddenly let out a grim chuckle: "What did you say?"
Ji Xiaobao’s face turned pale, he quickly retracted his neck, and a wave of fear crept into his heart.
The expression on Lady Ding’s face turned dark. With her hands on her hips, she almost seemed like she was about to raise the roof: "What do you mean by tricking us with two buns, Ji Xinhe?!"
Ji Xinhe did not look frightened at all. On the contrary, she blinked her eyes and said innocently: "Why should I dare to do that? The food on the table has been completely eaten. Nevertheless, I thought we should at least bring some food to mom and dad, so I heated up these two coarse buns. Although they are not something fancy, they are a token of our sincerity."
Lady Ding was so furious that she was about to spit blood. She threw the basket hard on the ground: "Damn you! You’re dining on a grand feast, while leaving your parents to eat this coarse bread, you do really have some nerve, don’t you?!"
"What kind of accusation is this? The food was eaten by the guests. How could I be blamed for that? Me and Xiao Bei haven’t had anything to eat yet. With your words, mom, you really hurt our feelings."
"You, a smooth-talking devil. Today, I’ll go and rummage through your room to see if there really aren’t any delicacies to show respect to me!" Lady Ding rolled up her sleeves ready to charge.
She had wanted to rummage through the room for a long time, and this incident was just an opportunity for her to do so. These little brats had a lot of money in their hands. Even though she didn’t know where it came from, she had to get her hands on it first!
However, Ji Xinhe blocked her way. The smile on her face had a layer of frosty chill: "We’ve separated our households, so why does mom treat our room as if it were still her own home?"
"Defying me!" Lady Ding raised her hand and smacked Ji Xinhe’s face.
Ji Xinhe darted to the side, and surreptitiously kneed her in the stomach. Lady Ding screamed in pain and fell to the ground.
Ji Dashan was so shocked that he rushed over to help her up, but Lady Ding waved him off: "Get away from me! Look at your nice daughter, she dares to lift her hand against me! Just because we divide the family, does she stop being a Ji? Can she act as she pleases?!"
Ji Dashan immediately chastised Ji Xinhe: "Aren’t you going to apologize to your mother?"
Ji Xinhe blinked innocently: "Mom tried to hit me without reason, and I simply avoided it. Where did I act violent towards her? Is this how dad treats me?"
Ji Dashan froze. He hadn’t actually seen...
Ji Xinhe gave a cold laugh: "Dad always pays heed to her nonsense without ever bothering to find out the truth. Well, whatever, we’ve divided the family, so I won’t hold a grudge about these things."
Lady Ding was so enraged that she was trembling, and her stomach was aching horribly. Ji Xinhe, not holding a grudge? If anyone should be holding grudges, it should be her!
Ji Xinhe sighed reluctantly, crouched down and picked up the basket that Lady Ding had thrown on the ground, and dusted off and packed the two buns: "Since mom looks down on the things we bring, we will not bring them in the future. It would be better than being ridiculed by mom every time. We left home with barely anything after the separation. Where would we get good food to honor mom and dad? If you don’t like it, we won’t bring anything. But remember that you asked us not to bring food. Don’t go around saying that we are unfilial afterwards. That would really be an injustice."
Looking at Ji Xinhe’s look of feeling wronged, Lady Ding was so frustrated that she felt like she was going to burst into flames: "You!"
Ji Xinhe stood up, her gaze sweeping over Lady Ding. The formerly bright stare abruptly turned gloomy, and she said in an warning tone: "Mom had better watch herself."
Having said that, she tossed their party aside without another look and walked away with her basket.
Lady Ding seemed to have been shocked. It took a long time for her to regain her breath. It was only when Ji Xinhe had crossed the courtyard and reached their own front door that Lady Ding’s cries of fury and the sound of things being thrown could be heard from inside, grating on one’s nerves.
Ji Xinhe heard the commotion and stopped. A profound smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Outside the low fence of the courtyard, an understated and elegant horse carriage passed by on the country road. The loud voices made it stop.
A slender white hand pulled aside the curtain. The deep gaze looked outwards. A deep voice asked: "Is this her home?"
