"What happened?" Xin He asked.
With lowered eyes, Little Chai Fire said, "Nothing much, it’s just that I’m worried. Your identity has been discovered this time, madam. I’m afraid that it might cause a lot of trouble, especially since those people are from the court."
As he spoke, he paused before continuing, "Madam, you were too impulsive."
Xin He laughed and said, "So it’s about this. But if I hadn’t stepped in just now, he might have already killed you with a hidden weapon. I didn’t think about it back then. I just spoke a word and he was able to recognize me. I indeed was careless."
Upon hearing this, Little Chai Fire raised his head in surprise, "Really? Whose hidden weapon was it?"
"It was Minister Duan’s," Xin He answered, shaking her head, "His mind is very cruel now. Just because you didn’t accept his request, he tried to kill you."
She remembered that Duan Lan had once told her that Mu Houchu killed countless people and would face retribution in the future.
She suddenly felt the irony. Isn’t he the same now?
For some inexplicable reason, Little Chai Fire’s mood improved a lot, knowing that she had revealed herself for him. After all, she still cared about him.
Little Chai Fire smiled for the first time, "Then I will protect madam at all times in the future, and not let you be alone."
"The most important thing now is to inform His Highness about Duan Lan. He has already reached Yu State’s territory, so we need to guard against him," Ji Xinhe said.
Little Chai Fire nodded, "I’ll go drive the carriage."
With that said, he had already climbed out of the carriage.
Even if Little Chai Fire was driving, he was smoother and faster than any other coachman. Ji Xinhe sometimes found it funny. How come he seemed to be good at everything except his studies, which were getting worse day by day?
She felt pretty helpless sometimes.
Suddenly, she heard a rapid galloping noise. Immediately after, she heard Little Chai Fire’s voice, "It’s His Highness."
Surprised, Xin He lifted the curtain of the carriage window. Sure enough, Mu Houchu was galloping towards her.
As soon as Mu Houchu saw Ji Xinhe’s horse carriage, he pulled the reins, making the horse stop abruptly. With a neigh, the horse jumped high into the air before landing.
At the same time, Mu Houchu had dismounted, and in a flash, reached the inside of the carriage.
Xin He stared at him in surprise, "What has happened to you?"
With a hint of anger still present in his eyes, Mu Houchu sat down next to her. His chest moved up and down a few times before he finally managed to suppress his anger, "Did you meet Duan Lan?"
Xin He blinked, "How do you know?"
A vein popped on Mu Houchu’s forehead. Ji Xinhe noticed quickly that his patience was wearing thin.
Ji Xinhe quickly grabbed his hand, "I only knew it was him after going there."
Mu Houchu looked a bit upset, but also somewhat guilty, "I only found out today that he has already arrived in Yu State. That cunning old fox almost fooled me with his distraction."
"Then you..."
Mu Houchu gave a cold snort, "I first found out he had reached Yu State, then I sent people to investigate what he had done after arriving. Only then did I find out he made a move on the Winding Pavilion, and later I found out that you had personally gone to see him because of the goods."
Xin He laughed, "I went for the goods, not him. Why are you angry? Besides, I only conducted official business, and got the goods back. I didn’t know it was Duan Lan. I still thought he was in the capital city and hadn’t set off for his journey yet. He also didn’t know it was me. His whole purpose of making a move on the Winding Pavilion was to find out who was behind the pavilion. Who knew it happened to be me? This is purely a coincidence."
Mu Houchu replied with a tight-lipped smile, "Indeed a big coincidence."
Xin He raised her head and gave him a light peck on his lips before blinking her eyes, "Is this enough to cool you down?"
She knew this man would surely throw a tantrum if he knew about it, and she was right.
Luckily, Ji Xinhe already knew how to handle him.
Mu Houchu’s eyes softened a bit, but he kept a straight face and said, "No."
Annoyed, Xin He glared at him, "No, it’s fine! Let’s pretend I went to see him on purpose!"
With that, Xin He turned her back on him.
But before she could fully turn around, a pair of strong hands brought her back. Mu Houchu overpowered her and started kissing her passionately. After her lips were left swollen from the intense kiss, he finally let her go.
Mu Houchu slowly released her and gently touched her swollen lips. He finally hummed, "I’m not angry anymore."
Xin He was intending to get angry, but his pretend arrogance made her burst out laughing. She threw herself into his arms, holding onto his clothing and saying, "How can my husband be so adorable?"
Mu Houchu’s face darkened slightly. This woman was now daring enough to make fun of him!
He pinched her little face and whispered a warning in her ear, "I’ll show you how cute I can be when we get home tonight."
The word "cute" was emphasized heavily, carrying a hint of gritted teeth.
In his lifetime, had he ever heard such a descriptor? The words used to describe him were usually cold and unfeeling or ruthless. But when it comes from his wife’s mouth, he was... cute?!
Was he, Mu Houchu, someone who could be described as "cute"?! No way!
As expected, upon hearing his words, Ji Xinhe immediately stopped laughing. She said seriously, "Duan Lan has already arrived in Yu State. He moves fast. He started investigating as soon as he arrived at the Winding Pavilion. I think if we don’t start defending ourselves, he might uncover more things."
As he held her chin, Mu Houchu warned her, "Now you see that he moves quickly, and is extraordinary in his methods, right? You still let him recognize you. Do you know that with the moves you have made in Yu State, once they get to the court, they will never let you off?"
Xin He innocently replied, "I wasn’t planning on revealing myself. I didn’t. But who would have thought that Duan Lan is so sensitive? Even with the veil hat covering my face, he managed to recognize me just by hearing my voice."
Mu Houchu’s gaze grew colder at her words. Ji Xinhe said that Duan Lan was sensitive, but he thought Duan Lan was only sensitive to her!
After six years, he recognized her from only one sentence. For six years, he must have been thinking about his wife!
Mu Houchu pinched her face, his expression darkened, "Don’t meet him again."
Xin He hastily nodded, "I won’t meet him. If you say not to meet him, then I won’t. Is that alright?"
Only then did Mu Houchu’s anger subside. He spoke seriously, "As for Duan Lan’s moves in Yu State, don’t interfere anymore. Leave everything to me, okay?"
